Sony has announced that it is ending repair support for its last PS3 model in Japan. It will also end repair support for all PS3 peripherals.

In a tweet posted by PlayStation Japan’s account, the company wrote:

“Notice of Termination of After-Sales Service
Due to the depletion of parts inventory, we will no longer be able to provide after-sales service for the PlayStation®3 CECH-4300 series main unit and all PlayStation®3 peripherals on April 30, 2022 (Saturday). If you are considering applying for this service, please make your request as soon as possible!”

In a longer post on PlayStation Japan’s support site, the company said: “We would like to express our sincere gratitude for your continued patronage of our products.”

“After-sales service will be discontinued on Saturday, April 30, 2022 for the PlayStation®3 CECH-4300 series and all PS3 peripherals due to the exhaustion of parts inventory.

“Customers who wish to have after-sales service for the relevant model should apply for after-sales service through the online repair reception service or PlayStation Customer Support by Saturday, April 30, 2022, and by Saturday, May 7, 2022.

“Please send the product to arrive at the PlayStation Clinic. If you wish to send it directly to the PlayStation Clinic without prior application, please send it so that it arrives by Saturday, April 30, 2022.”

The post continued: “We will not be able to accept applications or arrivals after the day following the above deadline, so if you are considering applying for after-sales service, please request as soon as possible.

“Please note that repairs may not be possible before the end date due to the exhaustion of parts.

“We sincerely apologize to customers who are using this product and thank you for your understanding.”

The PlayStation 3 was originally launched in Japan on November 11, 2006. A slim model of the PlayStation 3 was released in September 2009, and a final revision known as the Super Slim was launched in October 2012.

This Super Slim model was the final PS3 model that Sony was supporting with its repair programme until this announcement.

it’s stuff like this that i hover between console and pc (steam). consoles for exclusives and pc for longevity, then again i very rarely go back and play old games so … -shrug-

I wonder how many people were still using the service in Japan. I took my PS4 to a local repair shop in December and have never had to repair my PS3. If it did need repairs, I would do the same as with the PS4.

Probably my favorite console of all time and arguably the best console of all time.

Not so much in terms of software library, though it's great, but just the stock capabilities of the console itself and the XMB UI. I really wish Sony would have that as an option in PS4 and PS5. Best UI ever for a console.

I still use mine on a regular basis, the PS3 Phat is a thing of beauty.

News about nothing, how many companies still provide support/service for a product that is 15 years old? If there is such a demand and money to be made someone will provide a service for those in need.

to me part of the UI is also the usability not just the layout or look. and the PS3 in that regard had one of the worst user experiences of any console ever.
simply things like installing and updating a game were in some instances such a shitshow that I know multiple people who returned games due to how shit of an experience simply using it was.

installing Gran Turismo 6 and all its updates can literally take you a full day of downloading and installing, with a surprisingly high chance of getting an error and having to do it all over again.

the online store as well was a shitshow like no other. ridiculously slow and laggy and downloading anything was a chore. downloading multiple things in succession propmted another loading bar that "prepared" the download cue, which could at times take up to 10 minutes alone if the game was one of the bigger ones.

the UI was designed for entertainment devices like the PSX and BluRay/DVD recorders, not for a game console. and you can feel that in every corner. you could say the PSP had a similar issue, but due to the more limited nature of the PSP these issues didn't have nearly as big of an impact than on the PS3, which was way more online focused.

add to that the missing party chat, no console wide invite system and not being able to even receive text messages while playing a game until like 3 years into the life cycle and yeah, you got an awful UI for a console of its era

the PS3's user interface felt like it was a full generation behind the Xbox 360, because in many ways it literally was a full generation behind.

One of my friends in Japan got his Twin Famicom repaired by Sharp in 2004 - nearly 20 years after it was released. Although they did warn him that repairs were done on a best effort basis since some parts were not available.

The last great Playstation
Ah yes...the fact we needed to wait until metal gear solid 4 for an amazing game, the PS3 YLOD (which wasn't more talked about because of Xbox 360 RROD), that excuse of a controller...both sixaxis and the dual shock 3, the way all 3rd party games ran like ass...

PS3 was saved by the 2nd half of its life as soon as the slim was released in 2009 and Sony started to fire in all cilinders with their 1st party development. And even then they still had to deal with the PSN hack in 2011... PlayStation's biggest scandal. Btw, do you guys remember when PS3 didn't work once we got to its first February 29th? The console wasn't even ready for that lmao.

As a longtime fan those were some dark days.

Last great PlayStation my ass

I'll take the PS3 UI over the Xbox 360, XSX, PS4, PS5 user interfaces every single time.

Opinions.

Nothing about PS3 UI makes me think of Linux.
Scrolling side to side and up and down is as efficiently inefficient as typing a file name to open a document in terminal vs using a GUI.

Yes I know some powerusers use this to access huge databases (it's a joke).

Yeah....not getting the joke, dude. I open SQL Server databases with a GUI interface every single day at work and actively avoid using terminal commands. PS3 UI was simple and easy to use. Again....opinions.
