He was fired or mutually got kicked out of the company, after that E3 disaster.
That was what led to this disaster, not to mention the lack of 1st party studios, which he should have heavily focused on. This left a huge gap for xbox, which got them the lable of no games console.
I wouldn't take the label of "no games console" seriously. That is just fanboy talk. People said that of the PS3 (some might even try to justify that to this day) — all people needed to say that then was if the game ALSO existed on X360, as if the game being multi-platform means it does not exist on the PS3 anymore.

Why not? He killed almost everything that they built up with the 360. The generation was Sonys before the consoles even launched.

Edit, don't bother replying SlimySnake SlimySnake , I'm ducking out of this thread now. It's already turning into a battleground and is just going to get worse.

Because after he left, they had already reversed almost all of his decisions. Kinect was removed within six months. Always online was removed a week after he left. TV focus was gone before launch. Console was $400 six months after launch. X1 outsold the PS4 in December of that year and in several Novembers and Decembers after that. The console sold very well initially on the back of a great launch lineup and two great exclusives in Titanfall and Sunset Overdrive.

So what happened after the first 12 months? The PS3 is our best comparison. it sold like shit in the first year and cost Sony billions. PS3 was weaker and had worse third party versions of games. They knew they would never sell on the backs of multiplaform games. And yet, what did Sony do? They kept having great years after great years all the way from 2007 to 2013. They built their brand of exclusives when they were in third place. They didnt just sit on their ass and called it a day. MS cancelled Scalebound, the Coalition Games new IP, cancelled Fable and shutdown the studio as if they were swimming in first party studios. Produced a grand total of zero GOTY contenders in 7 years and literally showed up without a single next gen exclusive in 2020.

You cant just phone in an entire generation like that. Even the Wii U which was a bigger flop had a better exclusive lineup.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

What good did it's perceived better exclusives do when it only had a total of 13.5 million sales in it's lifetime ?

Because it laid the groundwork for Switch. People knew Nintendo still had the it factor despite a bad console gen. The it factor being their exclusives.

And the One has laid the groundwork for Series with the better structured console, more studios under it's banner and more projects in development right now than all of Xbox One's lifetime.

In the battle of the 'failed' consoles, One still ended up doing much better than WiiU all things considered.

Yeah and no. I get what you are saying. But what also happened is that when the early adopters jumped ship to Playstation, it also brings their friends over so that they can continue playing together. In the end it just snowballs once you get to a certain point. If it was Sonys exclusives that were the main driver then they would all be evergreen 40-50M sellers like Nintendos. They sell well, but they ain't in the same league. Nowhere near. Besides, those fabled sony exclusives didn't arrive for a good couple of years into the generation unless I am afflicted by the mandela effect?

So no, you can easily attribute the colossal fuck up before launch as being the main reason for the poor generation that they had after the success of the 360. The lack of exclusives certainly didn't help their cause either though

Isn't the console at like 12M or 13M after a year and 4 months? How is it hitting 50M in half the time? That would be in less than 5 years...and it only has 3 years and half to go...
The 12M+ was as of December 31st, 2021. That's 13 1/2 months. If the consoles averages 12M a year, that would make it close to 48M. The shortage won't last all four years. Plus, for every Series X, they can manufacture two Series S consoles. As of December 31st, 2024, im expecting 50M+ console sales. But we'll see in about three years. Once the shortage ends in 2023, the last 18 months will see an increase in Series X/S console sales.

Games take time. The Xbox game studios had less studios, compared to other competitors.

First studio they bought was Mojang. The next studio buy out wad 2018.

Your ps3 comparison makes no sense, Since Playstation had Insomniac as 2nd party studios, which they bought them in 2018.

If MS focused heavily on their studio's during xbox 360, xbox one would have alot of 1st party games.

At the end of the day, it was lack of studios, which made xbox unable to get alot of exclusives.

Yes, they had fewer studios and they fixed that by shutting down Lionhead, cancelling scalebound and spending $3.5 billion on minecraft? What?

Don had Insomniac and Respawn make them exclusives. They couldve functioned as second party for MS. Hell, he couldve bought them for pennies compared to what he spent on Minecraft. Both Insomniac and Respawn sold for around $300 million 7 years later. They couldve been had for far cheaper.

Why not? He forced Kinect into the box and overcharged for a noticeably weaker console by $100. He created an idiotic plan to limit trade and resell of used physical copies of games which the industry entirely rejected. All these negatives followed Xbox One into the next gen and stained the Xbox brand. Who else are you going to blame for the shitshow that was Xbox One?

Mattrick was a jerk, snob, and messed up a lot of things. But he did at least make sure XBO had exclusive new games on Day 1, including genuine showcases like Ryse (which STILL looks great today even on a base XBO).

What did Phil Spencer do to that degree? Apparently, Falconeer was enough in his opinion (no slight against the game, but it's not anywhere near the level of a Ryse, Dead Rising 4, or Killer Instinct).

If there's one criticism that can be fairly levied at Spencer, it's WRT lack of any genuine 1P exclusives at launch for Series, or even through 2021 (not counting crossgen titles). For perspective their first next-gen only, non crossgen exclusive (not a 1P game, tho) was Crossfire X.

...yeah :/...

Apple has a cult like following , if tomorrow they go all in on gaming which I highly doubt they will , they will be a feirce competitor for Microsoft and Sony. Their MacBooks and ipads are more powerful or almost on par with PS5 /series

Based on what? Just TF? What about pixel fillrate? Texture fillrate? Geometry culling? Triangle rasterization? RT BVH traversal intersection tests? GPU clock speeds (influencing cache speeds)? Half-precision? Quarter-precision? Feature sets? Game dev-friendly API tools, libraries, support?

Just because their new GPUs have a lot of raw computational ability doesn't mean they're better at high-fidelity gaming than PS5 or Series X, or potentially even Series S (depending on what new Apple device you're comparing it to). And from the looks of things Sony & Microsoft have notably better API tools, libraries, and resource support for AAA game development than anything Apple can provide.

MS weak point marketing outside the US. how do you build brand again with weak marketing ? even GP which their Ace plan don't have any marketing.

Actually MS and tons of other people advertise GamePass seemingly all the time. They've even got some funny throwback '90s music video parodies as advertisement for the service.

The real issue IMO is that Microsoft does almost zero marketing for the actual games in the service, let alone deeper dives into those games. They released Hivebusters for Gears 5 as a stealth drop. Psychonauts 2 got pretty much no marketing/advertising whatsoever at release time. Flight Sim was a stealth drop in GamePass, etc.

If you wanted to know if any of this stuff were coming, you'd have to of already been in the know and actively following their releases. Also, Microsoft's budget for advertising through traditional media is practically dead and, again, the few adverts they do put out just focus around GamePass the service and less so the games that make the service which should be front-and-center of that advertising.

Compare that with Sony's advertising and it's literal night-and-day difference, and I don't buy the excuse of divergent business strategies. Simple fact is, Microsoft/Xbox's advertising strategy is flawed if you're a core gamer and want more detailed info on the actual games (not just the service), and it's extremely flawed if you're a casual who only learns about Xbox stuff every once in a while (especially if that's through traditional advertising avenues).

Pretty amazing that a console so derided at launch managed to spawn the best backwards compatibility catalogue, the most powerful console of the generation in the Xbox One X and even the first last gen console in history to be able to play next gen games with the likes of Flight Simulator and The Medium.
Incredible turnaround.

Yep, it was a massive set back from the 360 successes.
But having said that, the Xbox One X was the best console. As far as the hardware goes it destroyed the PS4 pro in every way. It played UHD bluray discs, PS4 Pro didn't. It was whisper quiet, the PS4 Pro sounded like a jet engine. It was way more powerful than the PS4 Pro, was built better.
It was just had a pesky little thing called games that held it back.
To think what could have been if they did they didn't do all that stupid shit.

One year later and $100 it should have... the only thing it share with the Xbox One is the software and the CPU architecture basically.

That was Kamiya mismanagement.

spending $3.5 billion on minecraft?
Which gave them minecraft, which sold 200m copies.

Ea bought respawn. And Sony locked Insomniac with spiderman.

MS also didn't invest on xbox, like Sony did for Playstation.

They truly started investing on the system, once minecraft deal was done. In 2018, they started bethesda deal talk, which completed in 2020.

These of stuff takes time. MS haven't bothered investing on xbox since the OG xbox and x360, which led to xbox one state.

They took so long that some people had (decided) to buy 4 or 5 of those.

The units had a 1yr warranty to start with, even if you bought launch day the units were only not under warranty coverage for about 7 or 8 months. Anything mid-summer 2006 onward was covered for three years (first via the standard warranty and then via the extended).

Just my personal opinion, but my own issue with how things have developed is that Microsoft could've better set their budgets between studio/publisher acquisitions and securement of 3P exclusive or timed exclusive games, especially with multiple games getting cancelled from the 2017 - 2019 window (which is well after Don Mattrick had left the company, btw).

Yes, they would probably need to have paid a bit more for certain 3P exclusivity than Sony, but in hindsight those costs would've looked minuscule compared to the $7.5 billion they've spent on Zenimax, or the $69 billion they're set to spend on ABK. Would each of those 3P exclusives, as individual releases, done much for the long-term brand image? Maybe, maybe not. But enough of them in a period of time would've conditioned the press to accept that strategy (and gamers as well), and collectively could've done more for Xbox's brand getting back in good graces versus, say, pushing GamePass at the time they did, the way they did, IMO.

The thing is, GamePass is a very hardware-agnostic service, so if Microsoft's aim is to reach as many gamers as possible, and they see that as more feasible through a service than a hardware console, they can probably justify the big spending there in a way they probably don't think they could for the console. There are also things about aspects of their marketed image of being "play anywhere" that probably complicates their ability to secure certain deals of 3P timed exclusive AAA games, since those deals would have to encompass things outside of just Xbox the gaming console, that some publishers may not be favorable towards.

And yes they're doing some forms of at least co-developed 1P/3P exclusives developments, but these all seem very LTTP when more should've been done in that regard back in the 2016 - 2019 period. In fact, they had some, but they all got cancelled!

That is what Don Mattrick should have done. But the focus was solely on TV media at that time, which made them lose 4 years of that gen.
MS had golden goose to purchase Activision when it was cheap. They had the chance to buy Sega, bethesda, cdpr, bioware. They even refused gta exclusivity.

IF Phil was in charge of that period, most of these studios would have been an xbox studios, instead of spending insane amount of money to get them back.

They own windows. Xbox is just there to not let Sony dominate home media.
They have to focus on their windows store, if they really want huge market, not just xbox consoles. That is what is holding gamepass down.
As for games, they should spend their money like Sony did. No more MR nice guy. Lockdown studios to make exclusive games, like Sony did with Insomniac spiderman. Make a deal with DC, like Sony has with marvel.

We are seeing some fruition right now. With games like atomic hearts, stalker 2.
The issue is that game development takes huge amount of time. It's not easy to talk to a dev, and let them make a game for their console in 1-2 years.

7. In addition to bring their gaming IPs to movies and TV shows, they are also expanding them to mobile and PC, so will get new fans from there.
8. With over 116M PS4 sold and having BC, many people will prefer a PS5 for the next gen to keep their library.
9. If PS5 isn't way ahead of launch alined PS4 numbers is because of the chips shortage, not due to lack of demand.
10. All internal PS Studios have been growing their headcount, plus SIE is acquiring more dev and support teams, meaning they will have a bigger and better output.
11. According to Jim Ryan PS5 will have more exclusives than any previous PS console. The big majority of Sony exclusives are 3rd party, which means that they not only will increase their 1st (+2nd party).
12. They are working on a next gen iteration of PS Now, if more appealing will bring new people.
13. They are working on a next gen iteration of PSVR, if more appealing will bring new people.
14. They have 111MAU, meaning most PS4 users moved to PS5 or continued active during the last month on PS4, meaning they are happy and engaged with it. So when moving to next gen pretty likely may continue with PS.
15. This gen all MS games will be day one on PC, so if someone has a gaming PC and decides to have only a next gen console may decide to play the MS games on PC and get a PS5 as console.
16. Sony's gaming revenue and profits keep growing, so will be able to reinvest more in games, deals or acquisitions.
-1. Sony is releasing more and more games on PC
-2. Sony doesn't have Game Pass
-3. PS5 is a lot more expensive than PS4
-4. Sony was doing mobile years ago (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.playstation.U4&hl=en_US&gl=US)
-5. Chip shortages will hinder its growth
-6. Microsoft is much more competitive this gen
-7. They don't have any future Bethesda games
-8. They don't have any future Ninja Theory games (Heavenly Sword was a huge PS IP)
-9. They may not get every future Activision game
-10. PSVR2 is just an iterative upgrade to PSVR1. It will still be wired and has a huge cost barrier to entry, making it difficult to bring in new users
-11. Sony closed Japan Studio
-12. PS5 still doesn't have VRR, which might push more people to XSX
-13. Japan seems to care even less about the PS5 than they did the PS4

We can both makes lists for and against the PS5 outselling the PS4. Give it a few years and we'll have a better idea.

After that Xbox documentary I understand the decisions he made. He doubled down on what successes he had before not recognizing that the install base he had to play with was there to begin with just because of great games. I don't agree with those decisions but I now recognize where he was coming from so I no longer hate on the guy who stayed in his wheelhouse.

Plus probably the board and other people adding to decisions.

People act as if Phil, Jim Ryan and Don are the only ones making the decisions. Making them either geniuses or assholes….

Don Matrick literally left six months before the console even came out lol. Let's not blame everything on him.

To me he is miles better than Spencer. People who blame him really thing that he is the only one who take the critical decisions? Phil should be blamed as much as Mattrick.

That being said, quite a drop compared with X360 (amazing console with a ton of exclusives). Yet better than I thought.

I think it's unfair to blame one generation too much.

Wii U failed, but didn't Nintendo Switch succeed? They just broke the record of fastest 100 million units with Nintendo Switch.
PS3 failed, but didn't PS4 succeed? They are almost at 120 million units sold. Now PS5 is pacing to likely beating that record as well.
Funny thing is in unit sales the PS3 beat the 360 so Sony's worst selling console sold better than MS's best-selling console even with a disastrous launch price and a year less on the market. Clearly the biggest problem with the PS3 is how much money it lost for Sony compared to the PS1/PS2 making a ton of money for them.

The 12M+ was as of December 31st, 2021. That's 13 1/2 months. If the consoles averages 12M a year, that would make it close to 48M. The shortage won't last all four years. Once 2023 hits, the studio investments will start bearing fruit. Starting with Starfield we'll start seeing 1 to 2 AAA titles per quarter.

both were disastrous.
Ps3 with Cell processor, which made it hard to make games for. and xbox 360 with ring of death, which almost killed your console. Its just that xbox 360 had worse fatality with ring of death.

As of February 2022, lifetime unit sales of Xbox One consoles in North America reached 32.45 million while in Europe, lifetime unit sales surpassed 12.45 million. In total, 50.55 million Xbox One unit have been sold worldwide as of February 2022.

Don mattrick literally destroyed the Xbox one.

compared to the x360, which had sold 85.8 million units across the world, including over 49 million units in North America.

Currently, the XSX/XSS is sitting at 10.7m to12m sales.
But who cares about console sales? Microsoft don't- they just care about how many people are subscribed to their sub service. When console figures actually mattered for them, the 360 was a killer and almost beat the PS3. Now that their attention has focused to buying as many devs as they can to feed their sub service, why should ANYONE be worried about console sales for the series x/s?

Xbox one was discontinued, hence why the numbers are here.
Xsx/xss have time to flourish, which makes their numbers irrelevant, as long as they are in production.

So the fact they tout playing on PC and having mobile phones to play on is nothing then? We all are aware Microsoft are not in it for console sales- didn't Lord Phil say they weren't competing with Sony and Nintendo anymore? You know, those 2 other console companies... Since Microsoft decided to opt for a sub service and they decided not to release official console sales numbers, how could anyone care what amount of consoles they sell?

The X1 also sold better than the original Xbox and PS2 outsold the Xbox by a much larger degree than the PS4 outsold X1. The idea of failure is totally skewed. Nintendo basically got a mulligan on the WiiU. People act like it never existed even though the 'failure' X1 outsold it handily.

It's not their sole income source in gaming, but MS obviously still cares about consoles. If they did not you would have already heard about Flight Sim and Starfield launching on PS5, etc. No one leaves that much money on the table for no reason at all, and in this case the reason is desired console sales.
