In 2021 Sony accounted for 46% of all spend on console games, hardware and services

Spending on the actual games content -- encompassing full titles, expansion packs, in-game items and battle passes -- held steady when compared to 2020, declining by just 1%. This is all the more impressive given how much lockdown measures boosted spending two years ago while everyone was compelled to stay at home.
Combined revenues from Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Now and Nintendo Switch Online are estimated to account for 19% of all spending on games content.
Boxed games sales are sustained somewhat by the success of the Nintendo Switch, but Ampere predicts the market share of packaged game sales compared to digital will continue to drop in 2022, expected to slip to 26% of total spending.
Sony remains the market leader when it comes to driving spend, accounting for 46% of all revenues generated in the console market. Meanwhile, Nintendo's share dropped to 29% -- 2% less than in 2020 -- while Microsoft rose 1% to 25%.

That Gamepass competitor needs to be a thing. Sony can't handle the beating much longer.

Very dependent on Sony having the primary console that people buy services/MTX on. The more Nintendo and Xbox eat into market share that decreases. This is why Jim wanted to convert PS4 owners to PS5 very quickly - that hasn’t worked out for obvious reasons.

2021 They had 2 big titles. Imagine what 2022 is going to be with all the titles coming out on top of sparticus on top of PSVR2?

Sorry but nothing really stops Sony from dominating but releases. ANd 2021 in terms of pure must have games was a down year for shooters, third party. Microsoft had a good year with Forza and Halo. But this year we have Modern warfare 2 which is going to sell more on Playstation, we have horizon:FW, GT7, MLB, and God of war on top of high profile exclusive first party.

Nintendo is going to have a great 2022 because of Pokemon and their later releases. Xbox's biggest game is Starfield and thats not till Novmeber. Redfall the word is out if thats still 2022 let alone going to move the needle.

That is what 116m consoles, with dlc/mtx option gets you. Especially with games like Fortnite, Warzone, apex.

This would be the case for this gen, until the ps4 gets dropped. Once the ps4 is done, the market should remain healthy.

Edit: Switch is $850 (Switch, oled Ver, LITE Ver), Xbox is $800 (Xsx+xss), while the ps5 is $900 (ps5+ps5d). In term of hardware generated money, PlayStation will win.

Of course - Sony have an amazing year ahead.

Just imagine if there wasn’t a pandemic with the supply shortages. In the first year alone you’d have had the pent up demand for the PS5, Demon’s Souls, sackboy, destruction Allstars, kena, Spiderman, ratchet, horizon, Returnal and Gran Turismo with GOW likely to have hit soon after.
It would have been insane.

Revenue numbers don't really basically match this.

edit: I meant basically, lol.. will keep the funny auto-correct though

Wondering how long is this shortage going to last, significantly slowing down both PS5 and Series X sales

Everybody knows Sony is market leader.

The real news is that 25% for Microsoft, wow.
Corrected for you.

That being said Activision and Bethesda represent a good chuck of those revenues/profits. So if Microsoft turns alot of the third party output into exclusives. Expect Sony to take a minor hit even if it funds “2nd” party deals or buys a smaller publisher.

Well this finally puts to bed any idea that MS is a monopoly because they are acquiring new studios. MS can get new studios and content for their customers and Sony can continue to be the market leader. Wins for everyone.
Not a monopoly, would be anti-competitive behavior if they were to buy alot of publishers and remove them for Playstation platforms on mass. Which is why Microsoft has changed their “idk“ tone about if call of duty would be exclusive.

So this doesn't include sales in the PC space? I wonder what sort of impact owning Activision will have on the numbers, proves there is no reason for the purchase not be approved.
PC is massive. It has around 40% compared to 60% of the console space. Not to mention, PC doesn't have one company, which makes it hard to track.

That is not how this thing works out. MS advantage will disappear in 1-2 years from now. Right now, PS4 is saving their asses. Once that disappears, MS would be the number 1 in the revenue generated, once activision deal is done.
Remember in 2023-2024, MS will have massive line up of games, plus upcoming unannounced bethesda games. Not to mention they will own tons of games which generates massive amount of money from MTX.

24% increase (25 - 1 = 24). But yes, I get what you are saying.

MS sells millions of games on PC as well though as we saw with Sea Of Thieves and Forza Horizon 5. So the figures don't really show the full picture.
That doesnt come close to the amount of money those mtx games on the ps4 generates though. MS revenue on pc currently is low.

Most of PC money goes towards steam, take 2, EA, Ubisoft and epic.
