Why are people excited about starfield?

I think the Bethesda Morrowind days are over.

We won't see another Morrowind (in space) style game from Bethesda anymore. What they done with Fallout 4 and 76 is telling. And even Skyrim, which is anything but Morrowind, already marked their approach to streamlining.

Furthermore, as of now we don't know anything for sure about its gameplay. And it's probably gonna be bug infested and, IF there's mod support, up to the community to fix their damn game (like it was time and time again).

Todd himself also said that, paraphrased, that he regretted to not have monetisation options in Skyrim, which they sure add double times in F76 (MTX, subscription fee on top of a full price game). So expect a shitload of MTX in Starfield too.
You are very wrong

So i just read that some guy asked Todd howard what he meant when he said "starfield will be a more hardcore rpg" and Todd's response was :
"Really excited about what the team has done with character creation here. Including choosing background, skills, etc. You also can pick your pronoun (he, she, they) and we've recorded all the relevant dialogue to support that choice"
Like seriously ? This is an hardcore rpg feature ? chosing skills and the way npcs call you ? You would think that in an rpg the option to chose your background and skills is a must
Has the rpg genre fallen that much ?
He just didn't want to answer and dodged the topic. Not a good sign.

You don't have to trust me at all. You could read throughout various interviews Todd has given since last E3 though but then again I probably doubt you'd believe Todd's words either.

Well as far as the hype around it :
1. It's the first new Bethesda game in a good long while
2. People are hoping it's evolved version of Skyrim in space

I understand the pessimism given how little we know about it. The pronoun talk is just Todd playing to the reddit crowd. Those fuckers get excited by anything.

Its been described as 'Skyrim in space' - Skyrim is arguably my fave game of all time.
Its by Bethesda Studios - Bethesda studios make the best open world RPG's IMO.
Its set in space - Adore space based games.

I know there has been a rather cringy movement since Bethesda were bought to try and create a narrative that Bethesda 'are not all that', but its a shitty narrative. If Microsoft hadnt bought Bethesda, would this question even be asked?, i dont think so.

As for the endless 'we havent seen anything of it', Myself, and others, have talked about how Todd doesnt like to show off his games until the E3 before release. He's talked about this numerous times, including in both round tabes with Phil when they were bought, and when the deal was finalized. It happened with Fallout 4, wehere we didnt even know the game existed until the E3 before release. It happened with Skyrim ,and Oblivion too where all we had were a couple of screenshots until the E3 before release.
If we see nothing of Starfield around E3 time this year (or whatever Microsoft are doing instead of E3, then we can start to be worried about the game getting delayed.

Because, even considering all of their faults, "recent" (ahahah) The Elder Scrolls and Fallout games are good single player experiences so a new, massive IP from Bethesda is understandably generating hype.

are in a big trouble
Im cautious to be honest. Fallout 76 wasn't great at all at launch and fallout 4 was pretty good but its was a watered-down version in comparison to fallout 3. Before that they had skyrim online I believe and again it wasn't great.

So I'm not hyped about it like most people are. I need to see alot more

Most say that it's a Skyrim in the space...but for me just the fact that will be a Skyrim already spells doom for this game. After all, most of those are a glitch fest at finest. The other concerning point is the lack of gameplay.

Because most people don't stop being excited for games just because they won't be appearing on Playstation. It's a new IP made by the best (or at least one of the best) open world devs in video games. Basically everybody knows what this game is going to roughly be, Skyrim in Space. if that doesn't excite you then you were never excited about other BGS games either so your opinion on BGS games isn't of much use. The only people that would genuinely ask this question about "why is anybody excited for this game" would be somebody who's mad that people like these games and you don't, or somebody trying to do some thinly veiled console warring and probably has a greater appreciation of Destiny over the past month

Why not? Despite it's bugs, problems and a lot of discussion there is simply no other studio which delivers a comparable sandbox experience. Bethesda are without any competition every good and bad sense. There are some haters running around and they messed a lot with Fallout 76 launch but Skyrim and Fallout sales numbers reflect clearly the demand for their sandbox worlds. I'm okay with some glitches and bugs as long as I don't get the next game scripted to death AC clone.

People that made very popular gaming making a new game many people are looking forward to. I don’t get it either it’s very difficult to understand.

There’s nothing wrong with being excited about a game, even if it doesn’t meet expectations in the end. I’m not embarrassed to admit that I’m excited to see more of Starfield, that’s for sure.

Right now it's all pedigree/hype/buzz. We don't know a ton about the game itself yet, and that seems to be part of a deliberate strategy to play things close to the vest until close to launch.

What we do know is that Sony wanted this game as an exclusive so bad that Microsoft bought Bethesda to deny them. So it's safe to assume there are some big ambitions and what has been shown behind closed doors is very impressive.

At this point Starfield is more on the "one to watch" list than something we're excited about based on what we've seen directly.

1. Bethesda open world games have a feel that hasn't been successfully emulated by anyone else.

2. The modding possibilities.

Skyrim is no longer a “glitch fest” since 2016…

I'm personally not excited at all given Bethesda's track record.

They really have not made very good games. They make immersive worlds. Mechanically, their games are junk. And their quality seems to be trending worse. Their track record in the PS4/XB1 gen was extremely poor. Gaming standards have risen tremendously and I feel like they're kind of left behind.

But who knows, maybe they will surprise me when they show more. But I'm not holding out any hope that they'll deliver an ambitious game that's also fun to play and not riddled with issues.

James Sawyer Ford with his usual measured and unbiased take on a Microsoft game.
The thread is complete.

You seem to be upset about an opinion. I have held this opinion on Bethesda since well before Microsoft acquired them, has nothing to do with a Microsoft game and everything to do with it being a Bethesda game.

While as a xbox game pass owner I would love a kick ass game, I expect really lame story and it's the gameplay that really worries me.

For example in skyrim face buttons should be dedicated to core gameplay and these dudes decided to put a menu button there. Fun challenge was nowhere to be seen, it was just swinging swords or some really punishing bullshit. And fallout 4 should have had regenerating health given the amount of fire fights you have and auto pickups from bodies or even reduce the pickup gameplay entirely

If you take it that way, then you are not interested in any of the bethesda games.

Bethesda games is all about YOU. You are the center of their games.He/She/Them/Whatever means nothing to the game. Because their games doesnt have gender.

Starfield is space game. It satisfies everyone. Whatever you are attracted to, the game can provide you, aside of the creep stuff.

I was stoked for The Outer Worlds when I still thought it would be Fallout in space. In the end I was fine with it for the most part but I've always wanted a proper space adventure with tons of exploration and things to do.

This is going to be great and I will be playing it for years. I have no worries based on my time spent in previous games.

Fallout 4 was not perfect, the story goes to shit, and I really didn't like the end of the last DLC. That said my Steam time tracked in-game is over 2000 hours, which doesn't account for the 550 hours I put into the console version before building a PC in 2016 or the likely 2000 more hours I spent working on mods for the game. Oblivion was close to 260 hours, Skyrim was over 500, Fallout 3 was well over 600, Fallout New Vegas was over 500.

I literally have more hours in a single Bethesda game than the rest of the games from the gen it released in combined.

It seems like people are expecting a miracle with this game. I’ve seen comments like Skyrim in space whilst also suggesting each planet will be the size of Skyrim.

If Bethesda could make multiple planets with the density of Skyrim then shouldn’t the next Elder Scrolls title (being a single planet) only take around 6 months to a year to make?

Todd could probably even make TESVI in a single nights sleep with some of the expectations people have set for themselves for this game.

They have access to more advanced tools now, compared to 2011 tools.

Plus, the bigger issue is the quest logs, lore and skills. Having big spaces means nothing, if these are not presented in the game. It will be like Ubisoft games.

So you think TESVI will be completed very quickly since the scope will be minuscular in comparison?

TESVI will take long time, because of quest, lore, choices, recorded npc quotes. These take alot of time to do.

Starfield is space. If it has more planets like Skyrim, then that means it will have less npc, less lore. Its like settlements in Fall out. But smaller.

Probably closer to No Man’s Sky, but my point was people are expecting Skyrim on multiple planets. That’s simply not possible.
