RGT: Playstation 5 Pro Is COMING - PS5 Pro Performance, Ray Tracing Innovations, Release Date & Specs

Was there any doubt? Chip shortage isn't going to stop companies from releasing newer products/revisions. This would be suicide for any company to remain stagnant.

What an embarrassing state of affairs console gaming has become if this is even remotely true. Basically Sony wont have released any true ps5 exclusive games by the time the ps5 pro launches. What’s the point in PSVR 2 if there will be a better box for it within a year of launching?

Edit: just woke up on the wrong side of the bed lol!

also, good luck in trying to supply demand for three different boxes and having a PlayStation that costs 600 to 800 dollars a unit. I just can’t see this making sense three years in this gen. These consoles were supposed to be the end of the shit cpu console and back to delivering something bleeding edge.

so devs will need to be developing for ps4, ps5 and ps5 pro within 3 years of the consoles launching. Sounds great.

just give me good games, I don’t care about resolution and bells and whistles including raytracing. Elden Ring is literally the best game in 5 years and it’s not a looker like horizon.

Agreed. Returnal, Ratchet and Clank, and Demons Soul are all fake news.

I said this before but both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X didn't do big numbers and were short lived.
Despite what people want & would like
they wasn't a successful endeavour.
I don't see the them going this route again to please a few.

Exactly.
Makes more sense to sell a new generation with 100% compatibility like phone manufactures do.

Every 1, 2 or 3 year a new console? No thanks. Prefer to wait 5 or 6 year each gen. If they releae something would be 2023 or 2024 be a PS5 slim or Pro or both.

No, not that often. Just every 5 to 7 years a new model that isn't marketed as pro or a new generation.

Is it April 1st already?

Seriously, Sony would be mental to announce or confirm the existence of a PS5 Pro now when millions of people are still unable to get hold of the base system. I fully expect a mid-gen refresh of the PS5 but that is surely at least 2 years away so, right now, I don't care to read speculation about the PS5 Pro. I am more than happy with the console as it is... well, it would be nice to have VRR support but that doesn't require me to own a PS5 Pro (or does it...?).

120 fps is the last thing devs will focus on, no matter the power of the console.

Some games may have it while looking like last gen games tho.

If the 7nm chips are all taken, it makes sense to get new contracts on smaller 5nm chips. They might be more expensive but clearly the consumer is willing to pay extra so why not have it as a more expensive alternative. It will only increase availability.

That's not how semiconductors work... like at all.

If they can't get enough 7nm chips because of high competition, they have no chance in hell of getting chips on a more advanced node because the first movers on those nodes, e.g. Apple and HPC vendor, will pay multiple times per wafer what Sony can, or will order 10 times the volume of wafers as in Apple's case.

There is literally no chance of a PS5 Pro anytime soon. The people fuelling this are feeding people BS.

Fucking hilarious considering I have YET to see a retail PS5 with my own eyes. How are they gonna release a PS5 Pro during a chip shortage especially when they can't even keep the base PS5 in stock?

Oh great, now I can look forward to retailers around here having $1500 Ps5 pro alongside their $1000 Ps5.

PS4 Pro and One X boosted res a lot. Plus either solidified 30 fps, boosted it to 60 fps, and sometimes added two modes to choose.

With current systems you got games striving for 4k, 60 fps and RT is the big variable that can tank res/frames down a lot.

It's not like games will try for 8k. And I dont think they'd use a power boost to just double frames to 120 either. So really a mid gen refresh would probably strive for 4k/60/full RT. Is this enough to get people to buy a mid gen refresh? Who knows. Not for me as I already got an X. When I got a One X, the boost over OG was big.

But for anyone who is just getting into consoles, they might bite, pay the extra $100 or so and get the better system.

The pro or slim is years away. Some of the components for the tech needed for chips come from Russia and Ukraine, and where as the materials can probably be sourced elsewhere, it would take more time, and more money to get them in sufficient quantities to start mass producing for a games console/luxury goods.

I don't know, but I'd imagine that right now, any and all excess of certain stuff are being used for defence systems, weapons, or medical applications...surely??

Reuters news: estimates 90% semiconductor-grade neon supplies come from Ukraine

When it comes I will have my money ready. It's a no brainer soon as PS5 or Xbox Series X released that their internal teams have begun work on a mid-gen refresh among other things.

I think it's obvious that a PS5 pro in 2022 will be much too soon. 2023 would be exactly the 3 year window of the PS4 pro release. However, with the "slower" start to the generation due to supply issues and work from home realities, I wouldn't expect the mid-cycle refreshes until 2024 at the earliest this time around.

HOWEVER, I don't understand why everyone is acting like it would be such a crime for Sony (or Microsoft) to release a mid-cycle refresh at all given the lack of availability of the current PS5. Have we forgotten the world we live in today? It's called choice. If you want a premium product and are willing to pay for the extra boost then by all means.

Why is this OK at launch:

Apple-iPhone-13-Series-1.jpg

And this is fine:
nvidia_3080_comparison.jpg

And of course this is excepted as normal:
88-to-91-Civic-Hatch-wheeltiresuspension-fitment-Honda-.jpg

Same products, just slightly modified specs to appeal to a different consumer with different price tags. But it's so bad if we had different tiers of consoles. As far as I'm concerned, I would have liked to see a "Pro" console sold at a premium at launch to provide as an option. Microsoft and Sony considered it but opted not to because the gaming audience in general has been so unreceptive to such a distribution model and the higher price point that would come with the Pro model at launch. Essentially, the 3 to 4 year wait is mainly to get the parts smaller and cheaper to be able to sell it for the ~$500 price point that has been designated as the ceiling for a console price. I think it's time we gamers catch up with the rest of the world in this regard.

That's a good point where some products are expected to have entry/mid-tier/high-end options. I think it comes back to the box you purchase needs to hold value for x amount of time. It is frustrating to purchase the only launch option just to have a better option shortly after.
However, I could see the following going down:

2022: (First half) Rumors of pro console with speculations. (Second half) Sony acknowledges existence.

2023: (First Half) more rumors about specs and design w/ leaked images. (Second half) Sony announces/reveals console, price, release date.

2024: Pro releases. About 4 years after Ps5 launch

Really? You can barely buy a PS5 yet the Pro is already a go? This should be an April Fools joke. Sony need to sell about 50 million PS5’s before contemplating making the Pro.
It's obvious it's dev kits for PSVR2. Sony should learn from the PS4 Pro not to rush out hardware when there is clear no need to.

8k is on the box, and 8k tvs are getting more and more common. I can see a pro doing a checkerboard 8k and marketing it as an 8k console.

Would they release the PS5 Pro this year? Maybe is for Q4 2023 or 2024 if it's true no?

Since the ps5 pro has been offically leaked on NeoGaf....I like to formally leak that the ps6 exists and will be released by the end of this decade. Rumor specs shows it is a game console that plays games, but unconfirmed. Sony will still make it despite pending wednesday buyouts by microsoft. Will have more info in 7 years. Please look forward.

If they do pros they aint getting my money, the only thing that might convince me is if the pro model has 60fps but XSX + PS5 are 30fps on a lot of games.

Awesome. I want the 2-3 year console upgrades and max 5-6 year generations. Bring the console market more inline with the leap PC GPUs make. I'd love real enthusiast models too.

Interesting, according to Pachter Sony is Dieing so the PS5 Pro is probably Sony's hail mary last-ditch effort before the clock runs out. R.I.P Playstation ☠️

I wonder if they will do something different in an attempt to meet demand where they have 7nm,6nm,5nm and 4nm versions out with slightly different specs in order to try and meet demand they flood the market with all the chips they can.

The real question everyone should be asking is how big it is going to be - PS5 is quite big so should we expect ps5 pro to be even bigger? More power, more cooling etc. unless they will enable jet engine fan mode ;)

The chip shortage is the biggest deterrent against mid-gen revisions in the near future.

I expect this gen to last longer than the average generation, so there may be refreshes, but not within the next 2 years, no way. Most major chip manufacturers are completely booked, for Sony to have a new console ready in a year or two, they would need to have an ample supply of chips, which they're not able to get a hold on for the base PS5s as they are.
Yes way, 2024 if not 2023.

This makes no sense.

Say there’s a next gen only game that has an optional 60fps mode on base ps5… why couldn’t the ps5 pro have an optional 120fps mode? It wouldn’t look like a last gen game if the other modes don’t.

This is of course assuming there’s no cpu bottleneck.

Sony have stayed at around 320mm2 SoC for there last 3 consoles. So I would expect a pro version on 5nm to be about the same size.
They could do a PS5 slimer on 5nm, Which would be about the size of a ps4 pro.

Going from 30 to 60 is easier that going from 60 to 120.
Cutting the frame time from 16.6 to 8 ms is no easy feat.
You just have to look at how many games have 120 stable fps: 0.

Even stable 60 fps with bells and whistles is kinda hard to achieve.

They can't release enough ps5 skus because chips are too expensive but a ps5 pro is in the horizon? How the fuck could be sustainable a more powerful machine?

So this bullshit is the new norm then? Just a few years between new hardware.

Guck off with that. And even higher price?

Goddamn I'm starting to see the benefit of streaming more and more.

What? It’s mathematically the same percentage difference.

Don’t give me anecdotal results from games ; 30 to 60 is and identical leap as 60 to 120.

I would argue that any shortcomings 120fps modes have stem from the focus being less compared to the other modes.

Because you can’t control yourself? Just stick with the ps5 launch / eventual slim model.

“waaah I hate optional hardware so make everything internet based, laggy, compressed and no ownership allowed.” Wtf?

I am in that camp of buying a new phone pretty much every generation, always buy the latest PC parts though will probably stick with my 3090 and skip the 3090 ti and only one of my cars is over 3 years old

New console every 3 years?

This is some of the dumbest fanboy drivel I've seen in a while.

I can control myself very well thank you, which is why I didn't waste money on a ps4 pro. Buy I dislike this trend. It muffles the point of consoles, not having to upgrade. Always having the best version for your platform available to you.

And streaming is the future. I've tried several services and even though none are quite there yet, there has been massive strides taken, and I've had crisp lag free experiences.

Couldn't give less of a shit about ownership. Do you care if you own every song and movie you stream on spotify and netflix? Probably not.

I have bought and owned so many games over the years that I ended up giving away hundreds of them for pennies just cause I wanted to get rid of them.

Ownership means nothing to me. I play the game once and then I move on.

What are you? 12?

I've bought and collected games for 30+ years. I no longer care. Hundreds mean nothing to me, convenience however.

Now that's worth a lot.
