Digital Foundry - Dying Light 2 (PS5 vs Xbox Series X/S)

60fps comes to Series S, as predicted.

Also says the shadow issue is fixed for Xbox, maybe it wasn't split memory banks after all, just a bug.
What do you know, another series x and s game that wasn’t optimised for launch then fixed by a patch later.
awesome to see 60 fps on the little beast that could the series S and interested to see what improvements have come to the series x version.

Series X has had the VRR mode unlock and now this balanced mode so that's really good news.
I'm going to try the Series S 60fps mode as soon as the patch is downloaded, hopefully resolution will still look good on a 1080p set.

I’m sure it will look fine on a 1080p tv, it will probably be between 720p and 900p At a guess. No idea but I imagine it will look pretty decent and hopefully it hits 60fps more often than not.

Apart from the buggy trees/shadows there was nothing wrong with the game.

You're absolutely right, in DL2, apart from the shadow bug, the XS versions were totally acceptable (perhaps the lack of 60fps mode in XSS was objectionable).

However, it is still true that there are already many occasions in which the XS version of multiplatform games usually present more bugs or stability problems or graphic inconsistencies with respect to PS5 and that are resolved in subsequent patches....
I do not want to say that this situation is based on the lack of sufficient time for optimization and polishing of the XS versions compared to those of PS5 by the Studios (I do not know), but it is clear that it is a trend that we will see if in the future changes or does it become even more frequent.

Series X now has four modes,

Resolution
Quality
Performance
Balanced

Series S has Quality and Performance. You can see the resolution cut for 60fps but it plays so much smoother so it's great to have the option.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

I don't have the game on me anymore, would you mind taking screens of the same place in Performance and Balanced please ? just to eye ball before DF, VG, NX etc look at the patch in a few days.

The game isn't optimized for any platform. Even on PC on high end hardware there are still a ton of issues, but this patch seems to solve many of them. It's a great game though, loving it.

Oh yeah, definitely running a higher resolution and it also feels like the Balanced mode has thicker shadows (check the blue car in center right ish).

The sign, the brick front, yellow crane, everything is sharper now.

Open the two in different browser tabs to see full size. The difference is pretty noticeable.

Both look disgusting...

Probably cause they're cropped and zoomed sections of screens to highlight resolution increase lol, I'm sure it'll look a lot more pleasant on a display when running.

Looks sharper, but the difference is minimal imo

Its like changing Sharpening from 0 to 2 or 3

But I'm glad that they are improving the game. Bunch of QOL improvements on this patch.

Since I'm on PS5, will wait for the Balance mode to go back in

Would be nice to get a professional video on this, if it's using DRS the bounds may go higher or lower depending on scenes too.

Any sane person who wasn't intentionally trolling knew Series S could do 60fps in this game and other things were just obvious bugs.

Looks like Series S has a lot of screen tearing though, based on the one SX and one SS video I can find on youtube, SS has a lot of tearing, SX doesn't seem to.

Definitely a whole bunch of tearing on Series S in performance mode. Played through a side mission in that mode and there's a fair bit of tearing in the busier areas of the city, everywhere else seemed much more stable though. Just one mission mind...

yeah, I'm loving it on PC. Doing a co op playthrough with my buddy who I played number 1 with but thats been put on hold thanks to Elden Ring. Looking forward to playing it post patched on PC. Ive heard theyve already made some Direct X 12 improvements.

Basically, the lessons for all of these games at launch is comparisons are almost redundant because every game is coming in hot and needs patching. Then low and behold the patches come and the game is improved.

Series X looks like its crushing it with this game now. Good to see a developer utilising all of its strengths.
