For PS5 gamers out there wishing there was a bit more options outside of the standard performance and quality modes most games ship with, you’ll be happy to learn that Ghostwire Tokyo is launching with a total of six graphical and performance modes.

Quality Mode

With quality mode, you can expect Ghostwire Tokyo to run at a capped 30fps at 4K* resolution. Additional features such as Ray-tracing reflections are enabled, as well as other graphical improvements. This is the mode recommended for those who prefer quality above performance.

Performance Mode

With performance mode, Ghostwire Tokyo will run at a capped 60fps. This comes at the cost of resolution, as well as the loss of real time Ray-tracing in favor for spatial reflection along with other graphical details. This mode is ideal for those who favor performance above all else, and are looking for a near locked 60fps experience.

High Frame-Rate Quality Mode

Using 30fps as its baseline, High Frame-Rate quality mode is like quality mode, only with the removal of the frame cap. This means you should expect to see performance running between 40-50fps generally.

As good as that may sound, I actually don’t recommend playing with this mode for one very good reason, that being screen tearing. HFR Quality Mode suffers severely from screen tears during gameplay that it was instantly noticeable upon turning this mode on. Sadly, that same screen tearing mode also appeared in the performance variation of this mode.

High Frame-Rate Performance Mode

Like performance mode, High Frame-Rate performance mode in Ghostwire Tokyo targets 60fps as the baseline, but is able to go higher since it’s uncapped. From our testing, we generally saw performance hitting above 60FPS, however dips from those higher counts were noticeable. And like the HFR quality mode, HFR performance also suffered from severe screen tearing.

Note: Tango Gameworks has acknowledged to us around the screen tearing issues surrounding HFR quality and HFR Performance modes. We do know a patch will be released prior to launch to address some issues, so this may change.

High Frame-Rate Quality Mode With V-Sync/High Frame-Rate Performance Mode With V-Sync

The final two modes are the same as HFR quality and HFR performance only with V-Sync enabled. These are actually the modes I recommend as testing showed that those screen tearing issues were essentially absent. Now HFR performance mode with V-Sync still saw some dip spikes, but at least the screen tearing was mostly gone.

Of the two modes, however, I do recommend opting for HFR quality with V-sync as it felt like the better experience overall. It’s comparable to Resident Evil Village 45fps RT mode, or even to that of both Spider-Man and Ratchet and Clank performance RT modes. You do sacrifice a bit of the image quality as we assume the resolution is targeting lower than 4K, but that is really hard to tell during actual gameplay.

VRR has to be coming with these modes, it just has to. It would eradicate the screen tearing and provide a smooth gameplay experience.

This game is exclusive to PS5 for a year right? do theres no way these are in for the Xbox version.

The what?
Unless the devs know that the VRR update is coming soon who would actually want the uncapped unsynced modes?

Its an Unreal Engine game?
PC is the way to go.
Unless the devs have fucked up majority this should be easy to run on most "decent" gaming setups.

Or as with virtually every game made in the year 2022, PC is the development platform and they didn’t bother to retract anything.

It's Unreal Engine 4 so there is reason to be nervous for the PC version. I don't trust the devs to not fuck it up with shader compilation stutters like so so many other UE4 releases (Star Wars Jedi, Outer Worlds, Kena, Shadow Warrior 3, Sifu, DQXI etc etc etc....)

It is a first party timed exclusive game.Probably they know from sony that VRR wiil soon be available for PS5.VRR will do magic with these uncapped modes.I am a PC gamer and always play with unlocked framerates with my g-sync Asus monitor. It is a night and day difference!

Funny I never experienced compilation stutters in Fallen Order, Outer Worlds or Kena.
Havent tried Sifu or DQXI.

Tango Gameworks is owned by Microsoft, the IP is owned by Tango.....soo....Microsoft.

How is it a Sony first party exclusive?

So many modes, but no 1080p 60fps ray tracing mode? I don’t understand why nearly no game gives you this option. There are still so many people out there without a 4k tv, where it feels like they cannot get the full potential out of their PS5. I have a 4k tv, but it does very good upscaling even of none HD content, so I would also consider such a mode…

Can you read or you are blind?I said it is a first party CONSOLE TIMED EXCLUSIVE.The deal for the timed exclusivity was signed long before Microsoft acquire ZeniMax Media and this game was presented in the first branch of PS5 games in PS5 console reveal.Microsoft has nothing to do with this. The developers are working with sony for very long time with this game. When the exclusivity deal passes it is another story probably for next year!Timed exclusives are not happening because Tango or every other dev likes Sony but because Sony paid them for marketing reasons! And when i mean first party i mean a AAA game with a big budget!

So basically the usual quality and performance with a bunch of other options that sound like they'll only be worth it if/when Sony bothers to add VRR

How is it a first party title if its developed, funded, owned and published by a third party?

Do you not understand what first party means?

Even when I just ask for less options in games they come with 6 options that will probably be similar to 2.

So its NOT first party?

It's an explanation of the situation.

LOL @ "honor the deal". You guys are something else. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

"Honor the deal" is normal parlance when talking about two sides adhering to a business agreement. Look it up. It doesn't mean bowing and samurai swords, genius.

It is a Third-party console exclusive for a year a believe.

It was never first-party on Sony platform.
It will be first-party when launches on Xbox.

If you don't like the title "first party" change it to AAA game like Deathloop, but this doesn't change the fact that it is a console timed exclusive and microsoft has nothing to do with this at the very moment. The Game is being developed for PS5 and also PC right now as we speaking. It will come eventually to microsoft consoles but we will see it probably next year!

Ah man, it's first-person only? I was actually interested in this game until I discovered that little bit of info.

All those modes and no 3rd-person mode. Sigh....I just can't tolerate first-person, that view is just too limiting to me. Oh well, hard pass.

Thats NOT what first party means.

A game is AAA if it has a big budget.....thats literally what AAA describes.
Theres no such thing as a low budget AAA game.....thats an oxymoron.
Genshin Impact might not look like Uncharted but its still a AAA game because its budget was huge.

First Party describes ownership.
When Naughty Dog, a Sony studio make a game for Sony, that game regardless of whether it cost them 100 dollars or 100 million dollars, it is a first party title the titles status as AAA or A or even B tier doesnt matter....its still a first party title.
Ninty owning Bayonetta 2 by funding and publishing have effectively made Bayonetta a Nintendo first party title.

Ghostwire Tokyo is a fully third party title, Sony just paid for exclusivity.....until it drops on Xbox i guess....then its first party...to Microsoft.

It is a 3rd party timed exclusive. Sony does not own the IP, It belongs to Microsoft now after the Bethesda acquisition making it a Microsoft 1st party IP being developed as 3rd party timed exclusive.

I wonder if the v sync options are for the vrr update so it doesn’t tear in the non vsync modes.

Anyways, too many modes lol.

More options are always good, but these unlocked modes are going to look nasty until VRR, until there it's basically 3 options..

Overkill. Get two. Framerate/Graphics and just make sure those are as good as possible.

Needs to be 3, something in between. Framerate modes drop resolution and settings to the dirt so the Digital Foundrys of the Youtubes won't shit on them and drive negative engagement with *brand*. Quality modes dial stupid shit to 11 thats not even noticable in side by side stills. We need a 40+FPS 1800pish mode with sensible high settings, which is almost always going to be the best mode on a VRR display.
