Open world = 💵💵💵

Expect to see every Soulslike going this route.
Open world games sell a ton. A that's great as that's my tastes in games. More open the better. When I play them it's more fun for me just mucking around exploring than bee-lining the plot. Then I eventually finish off the main quest which seems boring most of the time.

Little off topic but comparing these sales' platform splits puts Horizon Forbidden West at around 5 millions, right?

Well you need to understand some GAFers were smoking something about over 10 million on Steam… 20 million overall and on the way to 30 million.

Exactly what I was thinking.

We were hearing 20-30 million copies sold cause PC alone probably is 10-15 million cause almost 1 million concurrent users just on Steam.

12 million is still impressive but still less than CyberPunk

The crazy thing is the Steam sales are through the roof and I predict more sales on Steam than all consoles combined.
From the little data we have (basic Europe lacking some physical sales) consoles had more sales than Steam. The ratio is probably around 60% consoles 40% PC if we include the missing physical data.

The think is the Steam didn’t have that crazy sales people are predicting… SteamSpy heavy overestimated it.

Maybe that is good to show how SteamSpy become unreliable after Valve closed the door to the owner data.

Those PC estimates always seem to be a bit exaggerated.

It's hard to get a solid formula based on peak or concurrent numbers.

These are call of duty numbers right ?
This is a clear middle finger to quest logs, holding your hand , waypoints , easy difficulty and accessibility.

These are CoD in decadence numbers… like the last game (Vaguard) that flopped and lead to the actual Activision situation.
CoD used to sell over 20 million units at launch (over $1b revenue in few days).

But I don’t think it is fair compare Elder Ring with CoD level of sales.

Can we put this whole "STEAMSPY is reliable. . ." nonsense to bed now? Especially when they are now estimating 20 to 50 million owners of the game on PC.

. . .honestly. That the game is doing well is not a surprise (we'll see if those numbers hold or if the people who wanted the game have gotten the game), but the absolutely ridiculous sales estimates that folks were bandying about - hooboy.

ACV is a billion dollar game. ACO was also wildly successful for UBISOFT. HZD had lifetime sales of 20MIL. HFW will almost surely do very well for GG/SONY. What are you even talking about?

On target for $1 billion in revenue. Has to be the biggest selling hard core game of all time.

Gaming is THE mainstream entertainment medium today.
I think the social aspect played a big part in this. They have clearly given it a bigger thought in this one which in opinion pushed the game to a wider audience.

I thought we will see even larger PC percentage, from China and NA number

It's certainly possible.

So since we already have European percentages for platform split, and taking into account possible splits in other markets going by where the different brands are at in terms of marketshare, I drew up a quick breakdown of possible market splits for the game and then global market split:

46% PC/40% PS/16% Xbox (Europe)*
*only official splits we have right now
40% PC/50% PS/10% Xbox (Japan)
40% PC/35% PS/25% Xbox (US)
60% PC/30% PS/10% Xbox (China)
45% PC/45% PS/10% Xbox (ROTW)
--------------------------
46.2% PC/40% PS/13.8% Xbox (Global)

Interesting to consider that PC might be the majority share for the split globally, mainly thanks to Europe & China (PC gaming is a lot bigger there than console gaming IIRC), and it's probably at least as preferred globally in ROTW as PlayStation is. But those numbers feel they could be pretty close to what the splits actually are IMHO.

What changes?

I'm not being sarcastic, just curious to see how this alters anything.
That developers don’t have to use laughably on-rails game design from 2007 to find industry leading success. That they don’t have to shy away from letting players explore, discover, and puzzle over elements of their games, over fear they’re alienating an audience because they weren’t told how unbelievably incredible they are for opening the first door in the mandatory and insultingly simple tutorial, triggering levels ups, unlocks, achievements and an orgy of on-screen effects four seconds after pressing “start”.

Right now, the bigger the game, the dumber it generally assumes the player must be. Elden Ring bucks that trend. Developers of similar titles are already openly annoyed its clowned their banal design efforts that were tired a decade ago. How many more devs do you think are actively taking notes on their play through?

Instead players are using YouTube videos for where to go, and how to break the game instead.

Seems silly to claim the game doesn't hold your hand when people are searching off site to see how to get thier hand held.

Simply incredible. 12m without being on sale at all. This game is going to have incredible legs over the next 3-5 years and once it starts hitting the sales and eventually deep sales it will surpass 25m easily.

Who knows. Its really, really hard to tell with stuff like this.

Fallout 4 moved 12 million, not in 2 weeks, but in 1 day.

Its final number wasn't 25 million and I'd argue for a 4th game in an existing IP, that is much more popular, if its not doing such a number life time sales, its hard to say with Elden Ring. So I don't know if its going to have long legs

You know, this the outcome that cdpr could have gotten, but they dropped the ball hard. Now CP2077 has got 50% off, and has lost tons of goodwill for their next product.

Meanwhile ER just sold an insane numbers, and garnered even more goodwill. ER will not be seeing discount anytime soon.

And their next game will sell even more with less advertising because the goodwill is at the prak right now.

Imagine the guy dead set it sold over 10 million on Steam alone lol
Steam is probably less than 5 million.

Great for the game… it already reached Dark Souls 3 sales… from now on is just increasing the fan base.

its Going to be massive, 12 million in 2 and a half weeks. It took dark souls 3 four years to hit 10 million.

this is going to 30 mill lifetime easy.

Small mistake, pc is 44%.

In terms of the other markets, I would have Sony/MS bigger in JP but smaller in the US based on console splits. That US number difference imo should be smaller than what we know of the UK.

Thanks; so that would make it 44% PC/40% PS/16% Xbox (don't know how I messed that up xD).

So let's try something like this:

44% PC/40% PS/16% Xbox (Europe)
30% PC/55% PS/15% Xbox (Japan)
45% PC/30% PS/25% Xbox (US)
60% PC/30% PS/10% Xbox (China)
45% PC/45% PS/10% Xbox (ROTW)
--------------------------
44.8% PC (5.376 million)/40% PS (4.8 million)/15.2% Xbox (1.824 million) (Global)

An objectively accurate claim. What a silly post: players seek external information for everything, judging by the content of YouTube. Suddenly, this is a mark against Elden Ring?

If players seek to have their hand held, the Internet provides that choice. With other titles, players have no choice: you will have your hand held. You will watch hours of cut scenes. You will have a thousand objective markers tripping over one another to make sure you can’t miss a thing.

And plenty of Gaffers thought that Horizon FW was going to outsell Elden Ring easily......I dont think anyone predicted that Elden RIng would literally suck all the air out of the room and dwarf two Sony exclusives in two and a half weeks.

We all often get shit wrong on here, its what makes it all so interesting. lol

Fantastic sales for any game, but even more impressive for a new IP with a high degree of difficulty.

Souls already did better with each installment, and while ER is technically a new IP, its basically Dark Souls 4 and people know it. Perhaps Dark Souls would scare off a lot of gamers, and Elden Ring + open world and GRRM marketing actually drew in a bigger crowd.

Maybe lol

Lots of CP2077 sales are based on what they expected based on what CDPR stated, so I agree they lost lots of good will and trust as no one wants to be tricked, scammed, but something like ER might be in a situation where its sales might be based on what new comers expect from other open world titles. Its not to say they didn't gain fans as no one is buying this game for no reason or something, simply its hard to tell if the next game will retain those new comers.

As in, they won the battle getting them in the game, can the win the war with making them fans of the concept long term? You only get 1 bite at the apple on such things.

Someone can buy CP2077 based on what they expect from an open world game, yet not return based on what it didn't do.

The same can happen with Elden Ring as I'm sure lots of gamers expecting normal AC light RPG concepts might be put off on what it is compared to the hardcore fans. So selling like this can be seen as many liking the concept sure, but it also can be seen as many new gamers buying it based on thinking its like Skyrim, Witcher, AC series etc. So I think they for sure gained lots of new fans, how much will be retained, remains to be seen at this point. Knowing how gamers act, I just don't know that the vast majority bought it for souls stuff, they probably saw "elder" and saw it was open world and likely made some vast assumptions on what they expected. I've read lots of people either not understanding the concept or exposing that they didn't play those games prior or something which tells me a good amount may have gotten the game thinking its like other open world titles or something.

I think their good will can keep those fans gained, I don't know if its enough to sell more every time though. Thats one of those wait and sees. Dark Souls 3 didn't have Sekiro or Demons Souls remake or Bloodborne doing 10 million.

Neogaf doesn’t have a good track record of being good at predicting things.

what I find it odd is Sony releasing 2 exclusives so close to each other and advertising elden ring! That is what I find interesting…

Well...not really lol

With Horizon Zero Dawn moving 20 million units, we don't really know where the dust will setting with all this.

Sony putting out 2 exclusives is irrelevant as HFW and GT7 are 2 completely different games.

The Last Of Us 2 and Ghost Of Tsushima had very closes launches, 2 different games, both broke sales records. None of that shit really matters to the degree that I think some really think it does tbh.

In terms of Advertising Elden Ring, I see nothing wrong with that either. Look at the results btw massive sales on PS, massive sales for HFW, massive sales for GT7.

Trust me, Sony doesn't find it odd and I don't think they are even remotely upset at having the top selling titles across several regions.

So I think they are different enough that you'll just get overlapping sales.
