Seems it wasn't that as it's still not ready, it also needs patches for some reason for older games and future games "may" support it.
Yeah their implementation sound like a joke.

Does vrr works without needing a patch on sex right?!

Was Cerny involved in this? If so, maybe this per game SDK decision could surprise us in a good way? (Just trying to be positive for a change)

Most important sentence...

Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch.

I was hoping that some games will open up an unlocked framerate option and hopefully it becomes standard in the future. Although I hope they still target stable framerates/pacing for people without VRR TVs.

The problem starts when you do a total reset from your OS then you have to redo everything ( i think it is due to Linux licensing ) then you have bugs to fix, new features to implement... fix the bugs for those...
But yeah they are too slow, they have to expand their software team so all their products would be quickly updated.

Cool. As expected, global VRR support that can be disabled for games that may face issues. Patches needed to unlock frame rate, like Dying Light 2 needed for 60+ support.
Bad that it's coming "in the coming months"...

If you have a VRR counter you can see it, anyone can try this.

The issue was here...games can break like i said before, or VRR can break. So VRR does have the potential to cause some problems in games.

Even on the XSX, VRR doesn't always work perfectly or even requires a special mode to be added to a particular game.

This won't be any different on the PS5 either, but we don't need to start pretending that it all works much better on the XSX at the moment

It doesn't cause any problems in Halo, it just runs like if you didn't have VRR.

Great news that it’s going to be supported in the coming months. People use it as console war fodder but VRR is just overall beneficial and as the gen goes on, locked frame rates are going to become less and less likely.

Good VRR support allows devs to push for higher resolutions with no cost on the user experience.

PS5 and PS4 System Software Updates release globally today

Variable Refresh Rate support is coming to PS5 in the months ahead.

Our next PS5 and PS4 system software updates are rolling out globally today, so we wanted to provide a quick look at some of the new features. We’re also glad to share new details on Variable Refresh Rate for PS5 on HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, which is planned to release in the months ahead.

New features for PS5 and PS4

Thanks to support from our beta participants, we’re introducing some fan-requested features to our global community today, like the ability to create or join Open and Closed Parties on PS5 and PS4 consoles. On PS5, we’re also bringing UI enhancements to Game Base and Trophy cards, as well as accessibility features like mono audio for headphones.

PS5 players with accounts registered to the U.S. or U.K. will be able to test drive a Voice Command (Preview) feature that lets them find and open games, apps, and settings, as well as control media playback with their voice (English language setting only).

You can read more about these system update features here.

For a refresher on PS5 features like how to apply game presets on your console, pin videos and apps to your screen while you play, or share your screen with friends, check out the new “Pro Tips” cards in the Control Center.

PS App and PS Remote Play enhancements

Starting later today, we’re gradually rolling out the ability for PS App users to create or join Open and Closed Parties through the app as well. We’ve also updated the PS App Game Base UI to make it easier to access the Friends, Parties and messaging features, delivering a consistent player experience with PS5.

PS Remote Play mobile app users can enjoy a new “dark mode” based on their phone setting and choose from new Screen Reader languages for both iOS and Android, including Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Finnish, Swedish, Turkish, Greek, Thai and Chinese (traditional and simplified).

On the horizon: Variable Refresh Rate support for PS5

We’re also pleased to share that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is planned to release on PS5 in the coming months. On HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render instantly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced. Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch.

As an added option, you can also choose to apply VRR to PS5 games that don’t support it. This feature may improve video quality for some games. If this results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn off this option at any time. Both VRR and this secondary option can be turned on or off.

Please note that results may vary depending on the TV you’re using and game you’re playing. As we get closer to the feature’s release, we’ll share more details, including some of the games that will enable VRR support through a game patch.

Our teams will continue to work hard on ways to enhance your gaming and social experiences on PlayStation, so stay tuned for more updates!

A little disappointing that it's coming within a few months and not this week as some had speculated but at least it's finally confirmed to be coming.

Regarding consoles, I also have both and I'm looking to get Elden Ring soon. I've played a lot of Xbox recently and fancy playing it on PS5 but I'm finding it a little hard to choose that knowing there's no VRR, with the performance as it is. I hope we get VRR on PS5 sooner rather than later so who whole topic can be put to bed.

Yeah, choice was easy for me as my wife likes souls games and prefers the PS5 controller plus the framerate is a bit better on PS5. honestly I have no issues playing this game on PS5 in performance mode, it really is no where near as bad as some folk make out. Put a good 30 hours in so far.

Come on now captain disingenuous.

There's even a picture showing it in the console setting.

Apply to unsupported games being pretty evident.

The option to make VRR either system-level or game-level is a well-thought move from Sony.

Yup, I get it now. I think this is a great option. Extra flexibility is welcomed. Genuinely super excited for this and happy it's just going to be sorted. Sure, it's later than expected but it will soon be a thing of the past and we can all benefit from it.

Should open up even more options of flexibility for devs.

If you fancy playing it on PS5 just buy it. Lifes to short to be influenced by console warring here.

It's perfectly playable and even has the better framerate. If smoothness is the be all end all for you then launch the PS4 Pro version you get for free on your PS5 for consistent locked 60fps. It looks almost identical. It's a crossgen game that unsurprisingly gets a pass for being a crossgen game.

The xbox version actually has the lowest framerate but some usual suspects have just latched on to VRR and it's become the topic of discussion. When the PS5 system update comes (eventually lol) you'd have the best of both worlds, highest framerate and your TV synced to the framerate.

When it does come this topic would be put to bed but rest assured some other topic will magically spring up to try and cause you some uncertainty/concern. Riky will be on the case, "FIXEd CLocks" "RDNA 2", "VRR" I'm guessing the next one will probably be constantly shouting "VRS" "SFS" or something.

Why so upset? The Xbox Series versions have had the framerate improved with the latest patch , DF talks about it in their latest weekly. It stays nicely in the VRR range for the smoothest experience on console.
It's DF who suggested it was the best way to play, I'd take it up with them.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, you're right that life's too short to wait on something like this for too long. To be clear, though, I'm not being influenced by any arguments based on which console is better; I just want the best solution based on the hardware I have and seeing as I didn't rush to buy it on day one, I'm in a good position to figure this out.

Werid thing, but according to some of you, VRR on the PS5 is already broken at release.

what a joke. should've supported VRR from day 1. it's really not that difficult for goodness sake.

And how come all those tv manufacturers and receivers had HDMI2.1 and VRR problems for some years now? Even at this moment, some receivers still need to get patched for VRR.

Holy shit if true. They can't have renamed the subscription names on the system getting ready for those tiers could they?

What game/feature was it btw?

It’s not with a good hdmi controller, Sony most likely spend cents for theirs and needs other components to help with VRR. Same way they used their XR processor to help the cheap hdmi controller in their now VRR capable TVs. And that I can imagine is not a trivial task. But it should have been released months ago.

So for roughly 5% of the population with a VRR TV, XSX offers the best version. For the other 95% of the population with no VRR TV, PS5 offers the best version?

This will make my PS5 elden ring playthrough just perfect! and I can just move my save from the PS4 version to the PS5. Gonna be awesome!

John "I mentioned in the (first) video that VRR is not working, and that's not strictly true, it does work but it doesn't do what it's supposed to do because of the V-Sync setup."

VRR is working, but not working because of the games V-Sync setup.
So you're telling me it needs a game patch and game support to do what it's meant to do. How does this differ from what's being said?
