AMD: FSR 2.0 will run on Xbox and these Nvidia graphics cards

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Last week, AMD promised a new technology that should let you blow up your games to higher resolutions or increase their framerates without requiring the fancy machine learning hardware of Nvidia’s GPUs like Nvidia’s lauded DLSS. Now at GDC 2022, it’s revealing how the new FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 actually works — and that it’s coming to Microsoft’s Xbox game consoles too.

While AMD says it can’t actually say when Xbox game developers might take advantage of FSR 2.0, it says it “will also be fully supported on Xbox and will be available in the Xbox GDK for registered developers to use in their games.”

Unlike FSR 1.0, this requires some work on the part of the game developer, so it’s not something you’re going to see every game developer take advantage of — but AMD confirms that both Deathloop and Forspoken (a tech showcase that’s also going to use Microsoft’s DirectStorage) will take advantage of it.

I'll be very curious to see how the performance on Nvidia cards is compared to DLSS. Like for like comparison, given that DLSS runs on dedicated hardware not used by the game, I wonder how much the performance overhead for FSR2.0 is given its taking rendering resources.

I'd expect DLSS would have a small performance advantage, but I wonder if we're talking less than 1% or 5 - 10%

Like if we saw games like this:
DLSS Performance: 105fps
FSR2.0 Performance: 100fps

Then that would be a huge huge win for FSR

This is HUGE news, these consoles are in desperate need of this kind of tech. I hope it works well on them.

Was this at some Microsoft / AMD event or something? Why wouldn't AMD just mention both Xbox and PS5 the tech supports loads of GPUs so surely they could just mention the current consoles?

I think it's just because it's a part of the Xbox development kit and on PS5 it probably requires extra plugins or something. Could be that simple.
Probably, either that or a marketing benefit that was agreed upon. Per the course it'll just make people panic and point fingers though. But it'll in the end be on both more than likely. Hopefully this time considering it's actually good this time it'll be actually used.

I just want Driver level FSR/DLSS on PC. I have losless scalling but prefer a better vendor agnostic driver level solution.

What does it mean for my lowly 1070? Rendering at 540p and upscaling to 1080p or something? I don’t quite understand the table.

That would be half scale axis and probably be rough looking. More like 1.5x-1.7x or so at like 720-950p upscaled in the higher quality modes.

You still on 1070 ? Jesus lol.

Time to upgrade broda. A 3060 at least will do you wonders and they are everywhere now

Can anybody see the difference in any of those pics?

If you're not seeing a difference, that's a success. It's reconstructing from a lower resolution to match (or exceed in some cases in their words) native 4K.

FSR =/= Machine learning based AI upscaling.

Isn't the verge some kind of ms mouth piece like Tom Warren.

Anyway as its listed as support by rdna 1 and rdna 2 cards, pretty sure the verge just asked about xbox

They're literally reiterating what AMD said directly lol. No one asked about anything, AMD announced this themselves.

Did they say what resolutions the FSR images were running natively at? Like what was their base resolution?

That's the whole point. You want FSR 2.0 to look identical to native. It means they can use lower resolution with higher performance and still look like native.

But I can't even tell the difference between the different FSR 2.0 options lol.

No the disclaimer just says Ultra settings.

I'm guessing 1440p ? cause 1440p to 2160p upscaling seems to be the one that gets talked about most often.

Heres a table

Nice, 1440p with no/minimal IQ difference to 2160p is a pretty good get, especially for a solution that works so well on a broad range of devices.

Just common sense. It runs on everything so it's a software solution which will never be as good as hardware ones (e.g. DLSS that uses tensor cores in Nvidia cards).
You know DLSS1.0 sucked right? And have you seen the examples of FSR2.0? Even if it doesn't fully beat out DLSS, it's now very close and for console viewing distances this will be a blessing.

From the images it seems like colossal difference between fsr 1.0, would love to see it on my screen in motion though.
For consoles this is absolute must, they can't push native 4k and give next gen graphics that's for sure, 1440p max.

This is great, Quality mode looks great, Balanced fine and even Performance looks serviceable, so there are options to people whatever they prefer more quality or framerate.

However Deathloop is not really best comparison. It's quite stylished/low detail game in general. Let's see how it runs highly detailed games, I don't expect any significant difference, but you never know.
