Strangers of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin |OT| Warriors of Light with Dark Souls...

No, its the closest to Nioh which this game is built off of.

Its basically Nioh with a final fantasty theme.
The combo flow of stringing together every increasing (cost) skills is fantastic. Once I got the hang of how it worked my brain broke for a second. There are so many jobs and on top of that, tons of job combinations which lead to specific combos, it is extremely fulfilling building the combos up.

Also as a tip for job grinding and other folks that have gotten to end game check my math here:
It seems that if you level up a job to 30 and that job has other jobs you can unlock, it seems like you get experience for those unlocked jobs as you play that level 30 job. For example: Swordsman unlocks Marauder and Red Mage as part of their skill tree. As long as you have those jobs available when you play as the swordsman job at level 30 the experience you get flows into the other jobs on that tree. I was grinding out skills last night and noticed that I was getting "Job Level Up" pop ups for jobs I didn't have equipped. I thought at first it was because I had equipment on with those job affinity but after testing it seems it was related to my swordsman job being maxed out.

Really? A final fantasy souls game?

Admittedly i didn't watched much footage for this one but it looked kinda button mashy from the couple of minutes i saw...

I need to watch more of it on yt.
Yes the game's structure and combat is just more Nioh. Down to the same roll/dodge mechanic and enemy tells with their red aura when they do unblockables. No more managing stamina and ki pulse. You now gotta micromanage your MP gauge which you can get more of when you execute enemies which is the most satisfying thing in this game.

Your enjoyment of this game determines how much you like Nioh.

The content structure is close to Nioh.

In terms of combat it is very different from souls. You can probably still play it like one doing the waiting game in boss fights but it wouldn't be a very enjoyable experience (nor intended), which is also how some negative impression from the internet comes from.

So many people playing the PS4 version... I played the demo on PS4 Pro and it looked like a Switch game, no joke. I couldn't believe how bad it looked.

Having said that, the PC version isn't as big of a step up as I hoped it would be. The image quality is still lacking at times (the anti-aliasing solution is poor), and the optimization is nonexistant. There's nothing in this game that should feasibly drop my frames below 60, yet it happens very often.

Thankfully, they plan on implementing DLSS in the near future so that should clear up both image quality and framerate problems.

Shared XP?

Isn't it about the affinity? felt like you get a % of XP based on that.

to level up jobs I use the Bomb hall in the very 1st level. counter "flame" and they self-destruct. I remove the party so they don't distract the Bombs. armor drops are plenty on hard difficulty. Armor is level capped but useful for dismantling for materials.

It is related to affinity for the jobs you have equipped. Both of my jobs were maxed at the time (Sage and Swordsman at lvl 30) but I was getting level up messages for Marauder, Redmage, and Pugilist. I just assumed the XP I was gaining (and not using since I was max leveled) was being funneled into the jobs unlocked by the ones I was using. 🤷‍♂️

Just replay the missions in co-op, you level up AND you get shards for extra exp... With a full party of three human players you can steamroll everything in no time (even better if you join when the host is already at the boss, quick battle and boom, shards)

Just killed the pirate captain. Supposed to meet the dark elf soon lol. JUST TELL ME ABOUT THE CRYSTALS.

I've been playing Duelist, but any Ronin bros here?

I've been playing everything. :lollipop_content:

Ronin's very cool. I like how you can hold R1 down to start an anime combo, and how doing so at the right time can block incoming damage.

Based. What's your favourite job?

Yeah I'd be interested in gitting gud at Ronin. Seems stronger than Duelist too.

I'm playing on Action. Game seems a lot easier than Nioh, I'm actually making progress in SoP hehe.

Tried that, but I found it faster in the Bomb hall. I unlocked all available classes in my 1st run of that mission. average 1 level up per minute.

The best solo farm in the game IMO is in the FFX level. Right after the third cube, there's a lone Griffin that you can farm endlessly for exp, Anima Shards, equipment, and even Anima Crystals on Chaos difficulty. Just go back to the cube after each kill. It's super easy.

So far I've enjoyed most of all, but I'm liking the pugilist and the swordsman jobs a lot.

The pugilist one seems great for breaking gauges, and it seems very effective to some enemies like skeletons. The swordsman one is great thanks to the counter, and the knight job makes it even better.

The magic user jobs are pretty fun too, specially once you are able to cast magic as combo finishers.

Action is normal? I was playing on hard, and it's difficult but not too frustrating since you don't seem to lose anything on death, even keeping whatever exp you've gained. What's giving me the most trouble are the bosses, those fuckers are hard to beat.

Hope you have fun with the game! Not enough people seems based enough to appreciate and respect Jack's strength.

Beat it last night, going for the platinum next! Honestly, it was very solid overall and carried by good combat and music. The loot system is really bad though. The loot menu management is bad, the loot design is pretty boring overall, and getting the right combination of gear is tedious. Also, for anyone hoping - we're not getting transmog ever.

It was tantamount to suicide putting this out within weeks of Elden Ring, it's definitely going on the list for when my souls fatigue recedes again. It has a certain goofy charisma about it that I can't help but like.

Confused by the mentions of different FF games though. For those in the know: Is it some sort of bizarre isekai greatest hits game, rather than simply a remake of FF1?

Without spoiling stuff, looking back on FF9 and how that played out I think this game is a great 20 hour exploration of that ending.

I really like that aspect of the game…different zones take inspiration from the different Ff games.

But for whatever reason I love this game. The grind is SO good, the jobs, the loot hunting, the combos…I just love it all.

Like FFXIV, it's basically just a Final Fantasy theme park.
Each level takes inspiration from a FF location
1 - Chaos Shrine
2 - Palamecia Castle
3 - Crystal Tower
4 - Tower of Babil
5 - Ronka Ruins
6 - Floating Continent
7 - Mako Reactor
8 - Fire Cavern
9 - Evil Forest
10 - Mt Gagazet
11 - Delkfutt's Tower
12 - Raithwall's Tomb
13 - Sunleth Waterscape
14 - Sastasha
15 - Insomnia Castle

Hmm, I need to go back and finish 9. I think I low-key spoiled myself on it with a wiki dive years ago, but the ol' memory isn't what it used to be 🧓

Alright nice, that sounds like some serious nostalgia bait.

Just as soon as I finish all of the SNES games as well :messenger_grimmacing_

I guess I will try all the jobs also.

Action is normal. Do you play co-op? Just having one person join makes the game a lot easier. Yeah the bosses are what filtered me on Nioh lol. The stages weren't so bad but the bosses man.

I respect Jack's strength and trust him implicitly.

Yeah you should try them! It's very fun, kinda reminds me of Monster Hunter in how most jobs play and control kinda different.

And right now no, no coop. In fact I've put the game on hold for now in hopes they decide to patch that horrible PC optimization. Game chugs from time to time and it takes away from the fun.

Which is a shame because right now this must be my most wanted game. So fun on every level.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm on PS5, it seems ok for the most part.

It's my most wanted game this year too. Are you big fan of final Fantasy or koei tecmo/team ninja?

Oh, I didn’t realize co-op didn’t work on the PC version!

I haven’t tried, but assumed it was fine since it worked for me on the PS5 and XSX versions.

Just did the mission based on Sunleth Waterscape (from XIII), I think it was called something Distortion. Unlocked the Samurai job as well, I'm enjoying it

How is this game on Series X? About the same as the demo from a while ago I’m guessing? I enjoyed the gameplay but that was a little rough. If the full game has better performance at least I’ll be more inclined to get it sooner than later though.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Man, Tiamat is really kicking my ass...

After finishing the game and being on my way to the platinum, I have to say this was a great snack. Maybe not something that needed to be priced €70, but still. I think the moments the game shines are the different locations that are inspired by previous Final Fantasy games and the way the game has 'nods' to the specific area. Like drinking the cooling water in FF9's forest area or the excitement of barely defeating the wall in FF12.

The story is quite incomprehensible, but I got some enjoyment from it. There were a few laugh out loud moments. Although the actionfocused gameplay is fun, the worst part of the game by far is the broken balancing.
I played the game on action and there were a couple of missions that immediately showed a red exclamation mark: i needed a much higher level, but there were no other missions to play. So I had to go in the level, battle a bunch of fiends that were obviously way stronger, and then slowly but surely up my gear levels. It doesn't help that the affinity focused gear drops randomly, so it could be hours before you complete your set.

Chaos difficulty is even worse. The missions are completely unplayable when underleveled, but become complete pushovers when you are above the target level. Sure, you can complete every boss fight without getting hit and therefore you can finish every mission even with lower levels, but still I felt the balance was just completely off.

But all in all, a fun game. Looking forward to getting the platinum tonight.

Neither! Haha I'm just a fan of Jack. Like really, this game seems to have everything I like about videogames: a very fun combat system, a cool OST, good difficulty and a story and cast of characters that range from funny to emotional. In that last aspect I think it has the same charm as the Yakuza games in some sense, and you can also apprecite how the game seems to be the vision of a man and a love letter to FF fans, instead of something designed with marketing in mind.

I dunno, it seems like nowadays they almost don't make games like this one anymore, and between that and the game just being very fun, makes me want to play it.

Hey, I never said coop doesn't work on PC! Just that the overall optimization sucks, game runs very bad for what it is.

100% this game is my GOTY, just non stopped played, loved the atmosphere, loved Jack as a character and the fact thye took inspiration from every final fantasy for level design and music, worth every penny I paid, luckily got digital deluxe so excited to see what they add in for DLC.

This was... bad, dropped it after two hours, just bad. I never thought I could drop a game, but I did with this, total eye sore with the most under developed systems I've ever seen.

You clearly didn't play a lot with the combat system to call it under developed.

The game exhudes AA low budgetness, yeah, but it's mechanics and music elevate it a lot imo.

I agree. I noticed how great the music is last night. The combat is great. I think the party of characters is good. Yakuza is an interesting comparison.

No they don't make games like this anymore.

Finished the story mode! Have mixed feelings about Jack's character in the final two story missions but overall great game and story. I was spoiled going in but the shit with the party and Astos took me by suprise. I like Jack, Ash, Jed and Neon. Sophia is okay but doesn't really do much. I really like how it sets up Final Fantasy 1 and expanded on the lore. 8/10 game. (Will this become a cult game?)

I'm going to play co-op now and help people progress

Pre-launch the story got dumped on constantly. People were projecting things into it. but it turned out great and one of the best plot wise. "chaos" obsession is part of the story. though needed more of the usual FF deep character exploration
