4k/60 is out of the question for standards for XSX/PS5 right?

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
After a year and a half, it appears we either get 4k with 30 fps or we sacrifice resolution for framerate. Like most people the framerate is clearly more important so I rarely play games in true 4k on my ps5.

Rockstar couldn't even get GTA 5, (a game nearly a decade old) to run at 4k/60.

I think many of us including myself had unreasonable expectations with these consoles.

Native 4K 60 was pretty much always out of the question. Even games that almost hold that like Gears Hivebusters still has dynamic res at play. Nothing wrong with leveraging tech like FSR and TAAU though. As long as it looks good that’s what matters.

GTA5 not hitting 4k/60 is likely more due to the ancient engine running it and cpu constraints than gpu. Though RT is heavy and theres no dynamic res so maybe not.

What's the dynamic res solution for 4k on consoles? Checkboarding? I don't know how that looks, but for the price of the consoles I would say being able to play at 1440p (or something else with the same quality) at 60fps is enough, and pretty good.

My question is if they'll be able to hold that up during the whole generation. I guess games released during the next few years will look better and better, so it's either optimizing them better or sacrificing some frames for that graphical bump.

Checkerboarding is more last gen tech. This gen will likely simply be scaling resolution and then upscaled via TSR/FSR2.0/some other TAAU. Generally better IQ than CB

Even a PS3 could push 4K, it's just about what the devs want to do.
As lower resolution bottom, who knows, i have no idea if there have been games below 1080p already to achieve higher frame rates this generation but why not?

While i don't care about some standard performance dictated on games (resolution/frame rate) i really diskile this "modes" options we get now.
Im ok with whatever the dev wants to do and hopefully he has the balls (and foresight) to decide how their game should run and adjust the graphics and design acordingly.
I've found myself defaulting to PC lately just to not have to deal with modes and shit when possible, because at best, the amount of settings to adjust and experience is the same.

Astros Playroom is 4k/60. Currentgen consoles are not capable of 4k/60fps for open world games.

the consoles could do 4k/120 just fine if Dev's choose to prioritize that and limit their graphical budget to achieve it. Devs wont do that though.

More reason than ever that I hope AMD's FSR 2.0 is close enough to DLSS to allow us to get 4k/60 like graphics out of 1440p, its the absolute best we can hope for.

This might be controversial, but I am not sure we need full 4k for games unless you sit super close to the TV. 1440 to 1800 look really good and allow for 60 fps to be maintained. the detail level going from resolutions in those ranges to 4k is very minimal from what I can see. I think maintaining 60 fps is way more important than the higher resolution. Dropping FPS or a game having a sluggish feeling is the first thing I will notice while playing.

From what they've shown they aren't even close to Insomniac's Temporal Injection... And both are orders of magnitude below DLSS.

Not if you accept dynamic 4k as 4k.

Old games will have problems running on higher resolutions or framerates, since they werent mad with them in mind.

Also Rockstar is lazy.

After seeing Uncharted 4 PS5 version at 1080p, I'd be perfectly fine if we get more games like that. Feel sufficient at either at 60 or 120.

Part of the reason Uncharted 4 PS5 looks so good at 1080p is because its not just native 1080p, its 1080p supersampled from 1440p, so the IQ is much higher.

I thought it looked okay on my 4K display in the 60fps mode, but basically the same as the PS4 Pro version did, so I'm playing in the 4K30 mode because the sharpness and detail is so much better imo. I don't know why but to me Uncharted just doesn't benefit from 60fps as much as other games, the input responsiveness increase and camera motion clarity in gameplay is great but all the cutscenes look worse and I feel the animations were made with 30fps in mind so it looks kinda off.

Yeah, I'd say so. A dynamic res with the fps is locked to 60 seems like the better path, imo.

Yeah you're not getting 4K/60 of this. Not a fucking chance.
The best you can hope for is 1440p.
4K/60 should be easy for last gen games.

4k is the problem. You know before HD 720p we had multiple console gens where we had the same resolution for years. The 80s and early 90s it was 320x 240... then 32bit gen it was 640x480 up to 1024 x 768 on 4:3 screens.
In comes PS3/360 and we get 720p (1280x720). This was the first time that resolution upped when we got the next console. PS4/Bone had 1080p (1920x1080) (well maybe not the bone, but it tried). We doubled the pixel count in less then a console cycle. The graphics tech has never been able to catch up.

All in the name of pushing 4k to sell new tvs. As everyone already bought their hd or full hd set. Need to milk those sales. They should be aiming for 1440p and upscaling or downscaling by tv resolution. This will give more graphics options like RTX and higher ,smoother , more consistent frames.

Also our top of the line $2k scalper gpus don't all hit 4k with newest titles. PS5 is basically a little less than a 3060Ti . An amazing card for 1080p/1440p but middling for 4k. It can play older titles, and newer ones if you drop the fps.

It’s doable but devs won’t target it.

I have enjoyed looking at 4k60 games like crash bandicoot 4 and borderlands 3 (that game has a repulsive story/characters but I appreciate the visuals lol)

Native ps5 games could look better than these even targeting 4k60 but it won’t happen.

Imo, 1440p+, 60fps with either smaa/msaa or competent temporal upscaling technique is the sweet spot.

It's out of the question even for some rtx cards. Thankfully we have stuff like image scaling, sharpening, dlss and FSR. So it's not like the old days and now you can have nice looking games running at 60 fps+. The problem with consoles is that some developers don't know what they're doing or some don't care.

Cool but insomniac isnt open source and available for anyone to implement.

And FSR 2.0 is not “orders of magnitude” below DLSS. It likely won’t be as good in the fine details just by looking at like UE4s TSR in Ghostwire Tokyo, but it’s pretty minor from normal distances. FSR 1.0 was very behind but also it wasn’t even the same approach

I would not say overrated, it's actually clean and beautiful to look at, but if your game can't maintain a stable framerate even at 30fps then yeah it's not worth it.
I like the 120hz option that Insomniac did. Where it was 4k/40 but it felt like 60 with how smooth it was. They're Wizards though.

I'm okay with dynamic 4k 60...at my current playing distance from my oled its hard to notice the changes in motion. 1440 is cool as a lower resolution. as long at the 60 is consistent (VRR helps alot with xbox tho)

Reconstruction methods are good enough nowadays, that 4k is not needed.

A 3090 can't do 4k60 in some titles that came out in the last year. A 6600xt or slightly weaker 6700xt certainly won't.

The question is what angle will the pro consoles pull? 8K?

Techniques like FSR2.0 will potentially allow more games to be (upscaled) 4K60. It looks pretty much indistinguishable from native at a reasonable viewing distance from the TV, and anyone who tells you otherwise either has hawk like vision or is lying in my opinion. I think a lot of games can't quit do native 4K at 60fps, so instead just lock to 30fps and push the boat out in terms of quality settings. GTAV's fidelity mode for example has RT shadows even in 4K.

4k and blurry framerate, or blurry overall image and 60fps. I hope this will be the last blurry generation and for the next one we will achieve PC IQ at last. 4k 60fps should be the minimum in 2022. Maybe in 2026?

Probably. But let's wait a year or two and see how all those upscaling techs pick up. Ideally the games should IMO have DRS implemented to maintain 60FPS, backed up by image upscaling to compansate IQ loss.

Exactly. Going back and forth between performance mode and resolution mode makes me wonder why resolution mode even exists. It's barely noticeable while playing, while 30 feels nauseating after spending any amount of time at 60.
I was awhile on the fidelity side then woke up to that smoothness of 60fps. 60fps makes gta 5 feel like a new game. ON ps5 going from performance rt to fidelity is a massive difference on how the game plays. It's so sluggish going back to 30fps it's painful. Fidelity adds a little bit of an upgrade but is no way in the world worth sacrificing smooth gameplay.

Correct. In motion 1440 with good AA looks outstanding and I’d happily take that if it means 60 fps as the standard.

The same old topic again and again...

It is possible to achieve 4k/60 easily, but it would obviously be at the expense of the level of detail. It's just a marketing choice. Usually producers aim to 30 fps 4k because they consider the minimum acceptable fluidity, pushing for the highest possible detail. Or 60 fps with dynamic resolution, when lower resolution levels are the "acceptable" paramenter and 60 fps are needed.
There's nothing wrong with the hardware, it's only that whatever the power is, it's primarily used to pursue detail.

Every game on PS5/ Xbox Series X could be 4K 60fps but it's a stupid standard to have when the games run on a hundred different platforms now.

For anything with the expected AAA levels of visuals and production values? Yeah I think 1440p or sometimes even 1080p and 60fps is the best we can expect.
It's a shame these consoles have nothing as good as DLSS 2.0, feels like an area where both Sony and MS dropped the ball.
