Why do you think Sony are neglecting so much Japanese games?

nah not even close. quick reminder that western devs made motherfucking bioshock, hitman and prince of persia
japan has done some great stuff but they dont put out what they used to. not to mention companies like square enix and konami making everyone over there look bad
100 percent agree with this statement.

Nintendo read the market correctly and realized the home console market in japan was shrinking in favor of mobile. Making a home console that could also be a handheld gave them the best of two markets they previously had split focus on. They now have a single market to target with games. Kudos to them for making a simple switch. Pun intended!

Sort of, but Nintendo also had the formula and games and audience to pull it off.

Sony actually tried to do this with Vita, but it didn't work. Their approach was different and more rudimentary (and one could say greedier), but this was a platform where cross-buy and cross-saves was relatively easy as a PSN initiative and was explored in a number of titles, a platform that could play full console-quality games thanks to Remote Play, a platform where games could be played on a portable or on a TV via the PS TV add-on console... a platform that could have been a Switch if they had added the feature to a later Vita revision ala PSP 2000/300, or hell, had just released a danged dock or video cable for it for it since video-out was possible through its USB port.

Sony was trying to bridge the gap between console and portable, and while exclusive titles were still part of the market approach (especially at launch, before they had to pivot their strategy after a painful start,) Sony was less interested in serving two unique and exclusive markets than just fostering exposure and attachment to the PlayStation ecosystem. PSP required exclusive features in games for titles to be ported over, but with Vita, you could buy some games and play on either platform, and as the console went on, that evolved from a special feature to a common practice. It didn't matter what platform you played PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale or Warrior's Lair on (RIP Warrior's Lair), they just wanted you playing your games on their platforms.

(PSP Minis also did this a bit back in the days, but that too was a hesitant and rudimentary approach that didn't work.)

Nintendo took the more dangerous path* of a unified platform, and ultimately it was the more successful path, but Sony was there in 2011 trying to position its platform for the same kind of purpose. And had Vita survived just a bit longer (and maybe gotten a "PS Vita Pro" ala the PS4, with a little more power but also some fixes of complaints like video-out support and maybe even SD Card instead of proprietary,) it might have been an even clearer comparison... but it still would not have been as successful as Switch.

(*Nintendo's took a risk with Switch. Their old multi-pillar approach enabled them to sell the same franchises on two different platforms, and in dark times this helped them carry on when one of the markets underperformed. So Switch was a big risk in going all-in.

There's probably some analysis worth doing as to whether Switch has really "paid off" as well as a surface observation looks, because its great numbers come at a cost of there being a second pillar with potentially successful sales as well as all the low-fi software they made for their portables that cashed in for easy money.
I wouldn't say Nintendo eve had a problem with "split focus" on two markets? The Game Boy/DS market was easy to produce titles for with the Pokemons and Nintendogs and Advance Wars and 2D Marios, they could even contract out core brands to like Flagship or AlphaDream and the games would still be popular. The console market meanwhile needed the best and brightest from Nintendo's internal studios to create something new and competitively rich in production value, often requiring a touch somewhere on their surface from Miyamoto to meet demands of quality. A Game Boy game only had to be good to be great, and now that Nintendo only has that one pillar, they've had a hard time making those little games that still printed money. Making two different Mario Karts and having each sell 10s of millions of copies, that was never a problem for Nintendo, but those days are seemingly over.)

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
The gameplay is good but everything else is lackluster, and great sales and popular youtube people saying it was good doesn't mean anything. As a Mario fan, I'd much rather pick up Mario 64 over Odyssey any time

Everything else is certainly not lackluster. Great sales and words certainly means a lot of thing over the minority hating it because they hate Nintendo/Mario or console warring

I don't hate Mario and I'm not a console fanboy.
Mario 64 is still the best 3D Mario game 26 years after it came out.

Sony is a western company now. Their blockbuster games are massive sellers much more then anything niche they had before. This trend isn't going anywhere. I haven't cared about anything Sony made in a long time.

My point is that Odyssey is extremely mediocre in comparison to 64.
Like someone else said, Odyssey just feels like a game about picking up the trash.
Except that Odyssey isn't mediocre as suggested by the overwhelming positive reviews from the masses and great sales, and those who think so, are the minority consist of trolls, console warriors etc

I'm being 100% honest, I'm a big Mario fan, Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy are great, but there's a meaning to the word "overrated" and it's when most people say something is better than it actually is.
You don't have any real arguments other than "people like it" and "people who don't are trolls and console warriors"
There's something called an "opinion" you know? and it is my opinion that Mario odyssey is a mediocre overrated game that under-delivered. I'm a huge Nintendo fan, I love Mario but I don't like Odyssey and I'm allowed to not like it.
Not everyone has to have the same opinions, otherwise it would be just boring.

I am being 100% honest here too with the assessment. I mean, the masses and critics' opinions and the great sales are very strong backings for the argument on why this game is great. We couldn't care less about the opinions who insist otherwise.

Sure you do (you are not a "we") . If you couldn't care less then you wouldn't be discussing it. All the sales, critics, and arguments in the world doesn't trump someone else's personal opinion. That is true regardless of the game or the platform.

I disagree but, to each their own.
I mean...this isn't the mid 00's. That guy did Gravity Rush after that ...but it did nothing for Sony.
People say Sony abandoned the Japan studio but those games were doing literally 0 for them.

There's a reason they kept the part of the studio making Astrobot. It was the working element of the studio.
Whats the point on having so much senior talent that clearly wasn't producing anything?

Even the Gravity Rush series even if they were generally well received by critics (80 on metacritic overall) no one was playing them...

And Keiichiro Toyama's new game looks bad btw.

I think Playstation is probably concentrating on the bigger japanese developers and getting games like Final Fantasy 7 & 16 exclusive and whatever else. Instead of investing in games like gravity rush which did nothing for the Japanese Market.

Really it was PS4 who brought back JRPG’s last gen, not the Switch. There was better JRPG’s last gen than the PS3/360 gen.

In general, Japanese people dont care about Nintendo like how people make it out, if the Switch wasnt also a handheld, the Wii U’ successor would be dead in Japan with the same games the released.

Its not a “you” here. If the game’s gathering praises from everyone except the minority, its safe to declare the game is great in an overall sense. All of these certainly trump over the personal “opinion”

No, it doesn't. The majority's opinion is still opinion. You can declare it whatever you want. So can I. If I don't like Red Dead Redemption 2 (which I don't) then all the praise from the majority isn't going to change that.

Yes it does though. You dont like Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn’t make it a bad game, because the common sentiment is that it is great.

Common sentiment doesn't make it a better game for me though. If you are going to judge games only by what the majority says then that is up to you. According to your logic, you are not able to tell someone if you like a game without checking metacritic.

I mean, that still doesn't mean the game is bad. Its really not up to me. Its the general populace that decides it is great.

Nobody cares if you hate a high quality game there, no worries.

The majority can view a game positively and an individual can view a game negatively. Neither are wrong.

Actually, its right to say the game is great, because we’ll be going by the general opinions

It is fine to say the game was well-received by most. I have no problem whatsoever acknowledging that about RDR 2. I don't have to agree with it though. To me, RDR 2 was not great at all. That doesn't invalidate the general consensus just as the general consensus doesn't invalidate my opinion.

Nah, its generally understood that if we say a game is great, we’ll be excluding the minority who says otherwise

Well I guess that makes it easy to ignore other points of view then.

well, we shouldn't waste our time on 'opinion' from trolls, or edgy people who loves to hate great and popular things and the like. Their 'opinion' are worthless.

Probs because Japan Studios games and Japanese PS games in general sell much less than their western games. Shit’s weak but what can you do.
Ironically the best first party game about Japan wasn’t even made by a Japanese studio: LTTP but Ghosts of Tsushima on PS5 is so damn good and nails the Kurusowa aesthetic better than even From could pull off with Seikiro.

Sony would have went the way of sega if these “fans” got their way.

Everyone wants sony to make the games they made on the ps3 and psp but no one was buying them

Returnal, the game everyone(but sony) deems a financial failure sold twice as much as any of their in-house japan studio games in 3 months on an brand new extremely supply constrained console for 70 dollars

I agree, PS3 was definitely filled with exclusives that barely sold, people get emotional over Japan studio but for a huge studio they didn’t output that many games.
Sony still bet on Japanese games on PS4, Nioh being a good example. Who knows maybe they have other things planned for PS5.

That being said, people tastes are also influenced by culture… some Japanese games do not resonate with some gamers. I understand Japanese culture/games are Sony identity.
But there’s a balance that has to be made, financial and creative vs risks, specially from a company who keeps making new IPs…
