Netflix loses subscribers for the first time in 10 years

Netflix’s struggle to boost its subscriber count took a dire turn in the first quarter of 2022. The company reported a loss of 200,000 subscribers globally compared to Q4, and it’s forecasting even bigger losses to come. Netflix estimates it could lose up to 2 million subscribers in the second quarter.

Shares are dropping pretty hard too.

Funny enough I was just thinking about resubscribing just so I can see Stranger Things season 3, Arcane and Cobra Kai seasons 3 and 4.

I just finished watching Cobra Kai season 2 and that show is so good.

Ah they must have expected that with restrictions being lifted.

Edit: ah beaten. ha.

It was expected.
COVID-19 give it an temporary boost that should be lost after the world normalizes.
How much is Netflix now?

Isn't it around $12 now? That's pretty freaking high especially when other streaming services are cheaper.

I'm really hesitant to resubscribe but I want to see those shows so bad.

Cobra Kai season 2 I just finished watching last night on YouTube Premiumremium. I wish they would have just kept that show there.

I only have it still because of T-Mobile, but rates going up again so I might cancel.

Canceled Disney+ already, soon I’ll only have HBO Max through my ISP.

Down 20% in after hours trading. The expect for net loss subs going forward. Looks like Disney and everyone else is eating into them. Articles also said the price increase hurt subs. But like all price increases, as long as the price hike outweighs loss of users it's a still a win. Their EPS actually was great.

They hiked their US subscription prices again just last weekend:

The premium plan, which is the only plan with 4K streaming, is increasing from $17.99 to $19.99 per month.

The standard plan is seeing a price increase from $13.99 to $15.49. This plan includes watching on two simultaneous screens and HD streaming (but not 4K). Finally, the basic plan is increasing from $8.99 to $9.99 and offers watching on one screen and no HD streaming.

I found Netflix's output to be very poor these last few years. If I didn't crib off my brothers sub I'd probably just get a month once a year.

Their movies are straight to DVD quality at best.

Also $19.99 a month LOL no wonder they are losing subs.

I don't know outside but here in Brasil:

Basic: 1 screen, 480p (lol), low video quality >>>>> R$ 25,90 (it is the second rise in price in less than a year)
Default: 2 screens, 1080p, medium video quality >>>> $39,90 (the second rise in price in less than year too)
Premium: 4 screens, 4k + HDR, high video quality >>>> R$55,90 (the same as above)

It is too priced here.
For example Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime are R$9,90.

I don't care about 4K since I watch on my phone but I am not paying $15 a month for the standard version.

Are they absolutely fucking out of their mind?

That sucks because now I'm not going to be able to finish Cobra Kai.

Edit: Apologies, I noticed the regular standard plan for just one device is $10. If that's the case I'm okay with that.

I still think their pricing is bullshit for what you get.

They deserve to lose subscribers and honestly deserve much worse.

Apple TV is the new Netflix+HBO.

I just hope they don’t follow the algorithm and end up doing just endless amounts of true crime shows instead of epic original fiction.

I wonder how their crackdown on password sharing will work out for them.
They seem to be betting on most people just paying up. But on a completely anecdotal note, I live in one of the countries where they are doing the "test run" on password sharing crackdown and it has made several people I know just cancel the subscription.

Fortunately I have a subscription to Netflix no one knew they would kill rentals, and dvds.

Even if half of those sharing a sub cancel and of those that don't only 1 of the spongers sub for themselves they gain.

Ditto price rises. Revenues are up. Yes, lost subscribers but the price rise outweighs that.

Growth in North America has been poor for years now - to be expected, you can't grow and grow forever. The only reason they've continued to post good numbers is because Asia is going through the fast growth stage. Over the next couple of years that will slow down and the love boat will be over.

I expect them to go to weekly drops for the more hyped shows.

The next evolution back to the way things used to be is gonna be "windows of availability" so you can't sub for a month and power binge everything available.

The overall deplorable quality of their shows, in particular episodic comedy or dramatic content that folks can just run in the background and can be made in huge 20+ ep seasons will kill off these streamers.

This is what I do, specifically with Disney Plus.

I'll subscribe for a month when there's a new series I really want to see and then unsubscribe when it's over. I did this with The Book of Bubba Fat.

So, currently I I'm not subscribed to Disney Plus but I will re-subscribe a day or two before Obi-Wan Kenobi starts.

Netflix is good for the Foreign shows, that's what I mostly watch. Especially Korean, Taiwan/Chinese and branching out to more European shows too. I don't mind subtitles.

I'd argue it's one of the few reasons to have the service. South Korea, Scandinavia (if you are into those types of shows) and the occasional shows from other places like Dark (Germany) and Suburra (Italy) are the only think keeping Netflix originals from being mostly trash.

Though IMO even those are starting to suffer from Netflix continuing with their strategy of seemingly saying yes to every project and throwing a ton of shit at the wall hoping some of it sticks.

Last kingdom is good.

Tbh Disney plus is coming on leaps and bounds. I haven’t resigned to Apple TV that was kind of crap at the start. I might redo for ted lasso.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

Tbh, I think it’s an unsustainable business and in the long term the companies betting on a successful cinema release will be the ones left standing.

Edit: Outside of the high quality shows/films of course. HBO and Disney+ will be the ones left.

Oh screw it.

I feel dirty but I just subscribed to Netflix after maybe 5 or more years of not having been subscribed.

You can blame season 3 and 4 of Cobra Kai for that.
