I had already used Retroarch via Steam to play some emu, but right now I'm working on doing a more comprehensive setup using ETA Prime's tutorial. Since this is my son's unit and it's only the 256GB model, I'll eventually have to do this for SD card, but right now I'm on internal storage. Thank goodness I had a USB-C to USB 3.0 converter and a USB hub so I could use KB/M and easily plug in a flash drive.

---
It was pretty easy to setup, and the DC emu came ready for 16:9 which was cool. Crazy Taxi even had rumble.

Vampire Survivors is a great game and works amazingly well on the Deck. I’m a new player so I haven’t yet survived into the 30 min mark, where it seems crazy slowdown happens. I launched both the main release as well as the experimental version that targets minimizing that slowdown.

Also, my Deck is coming with me on every trip going forward. It’s so nice to have on the plane or for a quick session in my hotel room at night.

Great to hear. I actually stopped playing it because I figured it would be a great game to install on my Steam Deck when it arrives.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Any reason you picked Emulation Station rather than something like emudeck?

It was what he had in the video. As far as I can tell, Emulation Station is just the front end, while EmuDeck did all the heavy lifting installing all the emulators and setting up the folders in step 1. EmuDeck created a shortcut for a ROM configurator and he says you can use it, but recommended Emulation Station.

I never finished the video, I just started playing right away. It could just be a cosmetic preference.

Tried out a handful of untested/unsupported titles. I used default settings in all cases(800p+whatever the game chose):
-Deus Ex HR - ran fine at 60fps
-Crysis 2 - ran fine at mostly 60fps, had slight dips into the mid-50s
-Burnout Paradise - ran great at 60fps
-DMC reboot - ran mostly 60fps, with occasion dips when entering new areas or new enemies appearing(probably shader compilation)
-Borderlands 2 - ran mostly 60fps, with occasion dips when entering new areas or new enemies appearing(probably shader compilation)
-Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate - ran mostly 60fps with dips at the beginning of fights into the 40s and 50s, then it's ok(probably shader compilation)
-Street Fighter IV Ultra - ran fine at 60fps
-Binary Domain - ran, but consistent dips into 40s and 50s during fire fights
-Skyrim - ran 60fps indoors, 50s in big cities, and 30-40s during outdoor combat
-Darksiders(Warmastered) - ran 60fps, slight drops into 50s when new enemies appear, button prompts don't show
-Max Payne 2 - ran 60fps, needs custom community controller config to convert KB/M to gamepad
-Darksiders(not Warmastered) - loaded, but only displays black screen with sound, doesn't uninstall!
-Batman Arkham Asylum - doesn't load
-Batman Arkham City - doesn't load
-DiRT Showdown - doesn't load
-Resident Evil 5 - doesn't load

Received my notice to complete purchase. Anyone interested in the 256GB model shipped to them directly from Valve for a small fee or few Steam games? I have until Sunday. Either way, will likely keep it if anything.

Any screen protector recommendations?

Any way to reduce the tremendous input lag when using Steam Deck's 30fps cap? Feels worse than double buffered v-sync to be honest, but at least as bad.

At this time, it's almost unplayable for me with the 30fps cap in action orientated games.

I haven't encountered this but I've been playing more slow paced games and at 60 fps. Hopefully this is an easy problem to patch out as it sounds like a nightmare to deal with.

I just encountered my first major issue with the Deck. I played Vampire Survivors on my desktop this morning for about an hour. For whatever reason, the Deck didn't download this cloud save (even though it said it was synced) so I load the game up. It loads my previous Deck save, without this mornings unlocks and the overwrites the local desktop file. So now I lost this mornings progress. Kind of a bummer and I will need to pay more attention to my cloud save files.

For TW3, you can set launch options for “-window -height 600 -width 960” in properties and get a nice 16:10 image that fills the whole screen. Turn off in-game sharpening and use FSR 4 or 5. Using Medium settings and Ultra textures you can get a pretty solid 60fps, with only the UI taking a slight hit.

Top: Native 1280x800 | Bottom: FSR5(960x600) | Medium Settings + Ultra Textures, in-game sharpening disabled. FSR allows the game to hit a solid 60fps, while it will drop into the high 40s at native res.

^New Benazcap silicone protective case we got for $16 on Amazon. Fits pretty good. Just need a good tempered glass screen protector now.

Got Yuzu up and running. Still need to mess around with settings, but it runs pretty good for early in the Deck's lifespan. FSR really helps out, especially in areas with heavy alpha effects. Looks decent, too.

Top: 50% scale+FSR | Bottom: 75% scale+FSR
SM-Odyssey-Compare.jpg

That waterfall scene is alpha heavy, so that's why it's only 50fps even at 50% scale+FSR. Otherwise, the frame rate is mostly bouncing around 55-60fps.

Was going to dig into Tunic, but then I remembered a new Kirby game came out.

You know, as much as I love my PS5 and its exclusives, or cranking games max settings on my gaming PC and 4K monitor, if I had only these two devices to game on for the rest of my life I'd be perfectly content.

NBj0mdT.jpg
Yeah, I've been a Nintendo & PC guy for like a decade with no looking back. I did buy an XboneX to play Red Dead Redemption 2 at lunch, but I don't often play that. it was my gamepads machine for a few years until I left my sub go.

The trick for me is, I will probably need to upgrade my desktop in a few years as the CPU is becoming ancient (i5 4690K) at this point. But, I also want to trade in my MacBook for the new iMac at my desk. The deck is probably going to become my primary gaming device so that should help get me through another few years.

Previously, the Steam Deck's dock was set to ship with one USB 3.1 port and two USB 2.0 ports. However, the item description has now been updated to indicate that the device will have three USB-A 3.1 ports, replacing the inferior 2.0 ports with the newer and faster technology. In addition, the FAQ confirms that using the dock will allow users to utilize Gigabit Ethernet, allowing for superior speeds and connectivity than Wi-Fi can usually provide.

Update on my RMA:
They received the unit about a week ago but I hadn't heard anything, I poked at the steam support chat and they said
"After checking with the warehouse, we have received your unit and will be shipping the replacement in the following business days"

So for anyone waiting on RMA, maybe give them a nudge if it's just sitting there.

Has anyone gotten a mic to work with this thing? I've tried a half dozen different wireless mic/headsets and none of them allow me to use the microphone.

My Airpods 2nd gen worked perfectly fine over bluetooth
Are you sure you're seeing them as a microphone? The Bluetooth headsets all register easily for audio output, but I have yet to see one come up as a microphone.

I am not trying to second guess you, but someone else told me the same thing about the Xbox wireless headset for series x and when I tried it with mine it turned out they were just close enough to get picked up by the built in mics.

I've used discord with them, yes I am sure.

This thread is so painful, hah. I was one of the lucky few that had an first shipping order. However, between getting that Deck pre-order in November and the shipping in Feb, I lost my job due to being outsourced to another country. I wasn't able to get my Steam Deck due to not having a job when it was time. Now, I'm employed and back on the wait list for this fall.

Love seeing the posts in here, though! Can't wait to get my hands on one.

You get like 50-70,000 points from buying the machine, so in reality - not really.
You're fighting for and supporting shitty business practices that Steam are doing?

OK, you deserve all the other bullshit they're going to do.

You're FINE with PAYING for a KEYBOARD SKIN in 2022, even though it's "reward program" points, it's still something they've quantified.

No I'm not paying for any shitty skin. But I don't have to? What are you talking about?

I have almost 200,000 'steam points' - but I don't spend them because I don't give a shit about that stuff. I want to play games.

Bruh, there are system wide mods for theming the device. Valve doesn't give a shit what you do with it.
The points shop is all optional shit anyways

Yeah I specifically tested leaving the deck in one room and using airpods in another, my friends said they could hear me just fine.
4p01BxN.jpg

Maybe I'll just have to get airpods lol. In discord (just like the steam app settings) I don't see my headset as an input device unfortunately. In this screen cap you can see it allows me to use the Xbox headset for output audio. This just sucks because I own all these headsets already and they work everywhere else. Thanks for the follow up.

I have a bunch as well and I only ever use them to award answers in their discussion pages that are helpful. Not even sure what else you could do with them.

There's no paying. You get 40,000-60,000 points for buying the Deck. You can buy every keyboard theme for that. There's literally nothing else of value to do with the points.

Finally I received my 512GB Steam Deck!

First impressions are a bit lukewarm, it is really BIG while on the other hand it feels comfortable. I expected better quality, even a better packaging, but it’s average at best.

Thankfully it really exhibits a great user experience and it seems most of my +700 library is compatible so I will give a try to Elden Ring just to see how it performs with the latest patches.

Quick update.

PS5 Pulse 3D headset works great as a mic and for output audio with steam deck. Just need to connect the dongle to a USB hub (which I already do to plug in my k+m, Ethernet and monitor.

Nice! We got my son's 256GB unit, but I'm still waiting on my 512GB unit. I'm a big dude, so I find the size and contours to be perfect. Switch and Switch Lite are both uncomfortable for me with their flat profile. Sure the box is plain, but the case it comes with is nice and I'd rather have a nice protective carrying case than a nice box.

What do you think of the anti-glare screen?

Well, for me it’s still too soon to decide if it’s my cup of tea or not, mostly because I’ve switched to OLED displays recently and I’m missing some of its black and crispy image details, however it’s not bad. As I said it’s probably too soon to.

I’ll be trying some non-comptible games to see how they run, e.g. Chrono Chross

Well, Chrono Chross pops up an error window and doesn’t run :(

Is 'That Pure Potato'
A plug-in to manage active CPU threads and frequency.

Loader:

PowerTools:

I could see this being used to save battery life with less demanding games, but could also benefit emulation.

Is the 64gb model screen still glass or plastic?
or is only 512gb model glass?
I've been looking at the comparison and the "anti glare" on 512gb model just makes the reflection blob bigger like on matte screen. It does fare better outside though and generally is a bit brighter thanks to it.

But I've also noticed the price. The 512gb model is still way more expensive than 64gb+512gb sd card(50$). I expect the built in 64gb to hold the system.
So maybe it's not a bad deal to get 64gb model at all? Would the steam allow you to easily select where games are installed ?
I don't see the game loading speeds suffer but maybe there are other drawbacks?
And shame you can't reserve more than one. I would get one for the little nephew shit and one for me. not sure who would get which one :D
Maybe the "etching" is easy to scratch? Or makes the black levels greyish or something? just wondering

They are all plastic except the 512. You can go 64gb and use a bigger sd card for the real storage. Or you can crack open the device and upgrade the ssd too.

I can reserve a second one on the website now. All lead times show as Oct though.

I am happy to pay up for a glass screen for more scratch resistance. Not a fan of plastic screens.
Thanks for the heads up! The 64gb seems like a steal otherwise.
the 512gb model also said october which would be fine if true (I doubt).
I would be happy to use your reservation haha but I am afraid how warranty and other stuff would work so better not
