40 FPS modes coming to Spider-man and Miles Morales on PS5

It’s a nice option though, given games have to sacrifice RT to get to 60. I don’t think anybody is saying it to get rid of 60 and focus on 40.
Yeah this should just be the new “quality” mode to all PS5 games. Surprised papa Sony isn’t making it a push for the game side so the TV side can sell more 120hz sets.

Damn, that was quick

So there's no need to use Performance RT mode on 120 Hz TVs anymore; just switch to Fidelity with 120 Hz set to Auto for the 40 FPS mode?

I think the base resolutions for fidelity and performance will remain locked more or less under VRR, framerate will adjust based on gameplay activity if I understand correctly. So performance mode will still yield higher fps.

Not really. If you are not using VRR - 60 Hz is still better than 40 Hz for most people. Fidelity vs Perf RT modes still differ in obvious ways. If you are using VRR - yes the fidelity mode is uncapped. But idk what it averages. Probably still around 45 FPS. So the Perf RT mode is still better if you want high frame rate.

Does VRR unlock FPS on the 60fps modes too or only the 40fps mode? It will be interesting to see the overhead the game has for each mode. DF video going to be very interesting.

Insomniac are 100% the goats.

45 doesn’t divide evenly into 120 Hz. Has to be 40.
Honestly I never really understood that, I mean I get it on paper, in theory, but in reality to me the higher is always better. Like for example 40 fps on a 60hz screen will feel much better than 30 fps, despite 30 fps being half refresh.

Are you being purposely dense?

This has nothing to do with Insomniac. You asked a stupid question that is easily proven false. 40fps does not feel like 60fps.
"Up to 50% higher framerate with VRR and 120hz"

That's literally what Insomniac writes in their patch notes..

What if 40fps feels like 60fps?

There is no need to hypothesise, it clearly does not.

Maybe not to you or me, but I've read plenty of posts from people who say 30fps is great once "you get used to it". Now that doesn't work for me. I can't not see 30fps when playing a game, but that does not mean others are different. Factually, I cannot see what others see so what you and I think is "clear" isn't always the case. I guess next time I have the opportunity to try one of these 40fps modes then I'll know what it does for me.

60 Hz TV refreshes the panel every 16.66 ms.
Game can refresh the frame every 33.33 or 16.66 ms.

Anything else is a judder-y mess.

Isn't 50% higher 45?
Oh it's not capped at 40 when you have VRR enabled on a 120Hz screen? The 40fps mode turns into 40+? :pie_thinking: That could be up to 50% higher in the 40fps mode, maybe, which is up to 60fps :pie_thinking:

They actually state 50% or more 😮

"However, if your TV also supports 120 Hz high frame rate input and the 120 Hz Display Mode option is active along with VRR, you will get a variable, uncapped frame rate that can exceed your chosen Graphics Mode’s 30 or 60 fps target by 50% or more (depending on gameplay)."

Ooh I see, it's including the 60fps mode? Nice. All I need is a 2.1 TV that doesn't cost me £1000+ :messenger_weary: My 165Hz monitor is only 2.0/FreeSync.

Did they include a 60fps, 120hz VRR mode?

It's only the 40fps, 120hz VRR mode they announced, right?

All 3 modes become uncapped when set to output at 4K 120 Hz with VRR enabled.

Fidelity, Performance, and Performance RT can all run uncapped.

I'm looking forward to the tests done on them.

That's what you linked said, right? 120Hz (with VRR) in 30 and 60 also?

So 30fps will be "~45fps", 40fps will be "~60fps" and 60fps will be "~90fps"..? 😮
Nah the 3 modes are Fidelity, Performance, and Performance RT. Each can be uncapped.

Fidelity mode will at times run above 40 Hz.
Performance mode will at times run above 60 Hz.
Performance RT mode will at times run above 60 Hz.

Obviously the theoretical max is 120 Hz.

I don't understand why they wrote "50% or more" if it's only "at times" above 60fps.

Because it isn't 60? Seems like a reasonable argument.
Game Mode Performance Target Display Mode End-To-End Input Lag
Fidelity Mode 30fps/33.3ms 60Hz 117.5ms
Fidelity Mode 40fps/25ms 120Hz 80.8ms
Performance RT Mode 60fps/16.7ms 60Hz 75ms
Performance RT Mode 60fps/16.7ms 120Hz 60.8ms

It's pretty good for input lag though.

Cause it’s not going to always run at a given frame rate. It’s variable.

50% or more means they have found that:

the fidelity mode is running between around 30-45 FPS
and
the performance modes are running between around 60-90 FPS.

But it will vary scene by scene. Could go even higher, or will be a bit lower, at times.

For Marvel’s Spider-man Remastered and Marvel’s Spider-man: Miles Morales.

New 40 FPS fidelity mode via 120 Hz output, and other small improvements.

Basically they added the mode they did for Ratchet.

Also added option to unlock the frame rate when using 120 Hz and VRR.

OMG I think I just came. Might be the motivation to get both to 100%

Also vrr allowing higher average resolution. I demand all head to heads are redone the second vrr is enabled rofl.

Sounds like it's always 50% or more.. That's what they wrote.

“can exceed your chosen Graphics Mode’s 30 or 60 fps target by 50% or more (depending on gameplay).”

I don’t see the word always. It’s variable lol.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
40 fps is much much better than 30.
Every VRR user knows that.
But I was told 30 fps was buttery smooth.

It makes sense since it goes with 120,but 40 fps just seems like a odd number.

But anything higher than 30 fps is a winner in my book. That ancient number needs to perish already

Neither did I, but just watch the videos on youtube, feels good.
Make sure to trick your brain first by playing in 30fps mode then switch to 40fps.

The extra smoothness for those 10 extra frames, plus a does of placebo will see you ditch 60fps and reduced fidelity pretty quickly.

40fps is the only way to play Ratchet and clank for me, best of both worlds.

Some 60fps games feel like ass to play for me, but I haven't really seen anyone else complain about it (Resident Evil Village felt horrible to me, might be input lag? Unless its meant to feel like that to play).
I personally don't mind 30fps games, I played Valhalla and some others at 30, including Spider-Man.
