Activision Blizzard Loses 60 Million Monthly Active Users In Past Year

For the quarter ending March 31, Activision Blizzard had revenue of $1.77 billion, compared to $2.28 billion during the same period last year. Net bookings, meanwhile, amounted to $1.48 billion, down from $2.07 billion last year. In-game net bookings came in at $1.01 billion, a decrease from $1.34 billion.

In terms of player numbers, Activision Blizzard's overall monthly active users amounted to 372 million for the quarter. This is down from 435 million during the same period last year--that's a drop of about 63 million players in a year.

Holy shit dude.

Vanguard was shit to begin with and now it's throwing in fuckin...godzilla and snoop dogg into a "WW2" themed game so no surprise people have dropped that.
As for WoW...shit mechanics that for 3 expansions now players have told devs they suck and dont want them and they still force them on you and now it's just a big force of pandering with its fuckin furry dragon race designed specifically to appeal to the blue hair twitter whales.

Everyone seems to be down like 25 percent vs 2021 YoY. Covid drop has happened massively across gaming. No wonder everyone was trying to sell while the numbers were inflated. Some Serious reality checks coming in this year imo.

I'm one of those users, primarily due to Burning Crusade Classic.

When they announced Wrath of the Lich King Classic, I was thrilled, and then like 30 seconds later, I was not; the fact that they removed Dungeon Finder is dumb.

Did they removed Dungeon Finger when they released classic? Had I heard about it maybe I would've given it a shot, I really dislike what Dungeon Finder does to the game. One of the reason I have a hard time playing FFXIV. Loved the sense of community back in the old days playing the original WoW, where people knew each other in the server. Good old days when the game wasn't designed around what is most convenient.

I have suspected that the numbers will go down after locked-down period, but this is a significant lost numbers.

And Starcraft.
And Diablo.
But mostly Warcraft, yeah :messenger_expressionless:
I never really liked StarCraft or Diablo as much as I liked Warcraft, Dota and WoW back in the day.

Original WoW is still some of the best time I had playing a game, I would never have imagined that almost 20 years later I much rather play the old version of the game as it was than to play whatever it is that they are putting out now.

To me it feels like Bioware all over again and once great dev turned to complete shit after it was acquired by a big publisher.

Honestly this was probably there big play for Diablo Immortal, have it link into battle net and then claim all the mobile free 2 play users where new active accounts, announce the huge growth at the next quarter and watch the stock price shoot up.

However with the Microsoft purchase I wonder if they will delay release until the deal goes through.

They quietly revealed the release date for Diablo Immortal today, so it's clear that they'll be back in good shape on June 2nd this year. That game alone should reach hundreds of millions of users, so bringing back a mere 60mil will be nothing.

COVID bump plus warzone past it's monstrous peak coupled with the latest modern warfare being over 2 years old and the last black ops over a year. Vanguard was never going to stop the decline.

This year MW2 + warzone 2 probably 6 month's later. They'll have a much better year next year.

Didn't they just announce the release as June 2?

Not just for them, but imo for any big publisher thats cannibalizing the same collection of 10-20 year old IP.
Everybody went after that same GaaS and mobile audience but only a few games hit. Meanwhile devs that just focused on catering to the more traditional gamers and on growing the audience they already had are doing better than ever.

Even mobile and young F2P players will eventually figure out that there's no point into buying skins or getting manipulated by the game to spend money, it's just a matter of getting burned enough times.

Blizzard was somehow capable of creating WoW from the ground up in 2005 but you are telling me that all they could make with WoW since then was to shit one garbage expansion after another with no ambition whatsoever? They couldn't afford to keep StarCraft or Warcraft RTS games going in any way? All that the Activison side could do was to pretty much put all their internal studios to work on CoD?

372 million is still HUGE. I wonder what the numbers were pre covid. If anything it puts into perspective how huge of a deal the MS purchase is and how much potential the deal has on gaining Game Pass subs over the years.

This drop was on the Activision and Blizzard side, King was stable and the arpu increased 10%.

It would be good to actually have a look for 2019/2020 numbers.

I did my part!

haven't clicked on their launcher in over a year, and yet they recently sent me an email asking for a survey that takes about 15 minutes! I'm no longer an active user Blizz!!

Proud part of the 60 million after getting roped back in by MW19, Cold War being a regression that lost me and Vanguard looking like hot garbage. 🤷‍♂️

372 million is still a bunch
Yes, that is a large number but it does not tell the whole story. A good question for any of the ATVI investors that may be here is this, is 372M MAU enough for their business model to be sustainable?

It probably is enough but I'd be willing to bet that they need similarly large numbers to stay out of the red.
