Surely anyone would have offered more than this. Makes me wonder if SQ even contacted anyone else for counter offers

Wouldn't surprise me because they are actually fucking retarded
Sony probably saw something messy with all these mismanaged studios and didn't want to take part of this.
It's not just about getting IPs.

Sony was always more interested on the Japanese side of Square-Enix tbh.

I get why ms did not bid, as they are tied up with acti deal, but why did sony not bid, surely these devs are worth way more then 300 mill.

Makes you wonder if they aren't tied up with something else too, this was a bargain for 300m, I doubt there's any better deal out there. Hopefully the rumored Sony is interested in Ubisoft aren't real.

I just can't understand how they sold it for so little while including the IPs and the past games.

Avengers was a disaster and Guardians too, these studios weren’t making any money for years.

It’s funny that Crystal Dynamics was sold to someone else other than MS though, considering they are developing PD.

Guess SE is out of the Marvel business too.

230mil for Insomniac is the deal of the century. They are pretty much the #1 Sony studio around these days if you ask me.
I'd personally say this crystal dynamics/Eidos deal is a lot better when you look at all the ips.

Insomniac came with no ips other than sunset overdrive & maybe song of the deep (anyone even remember this game?)

That being said Insomniac is a good purchase for Sony as they own a lot of their older ips that they worked on.
& The Spiderman game has massively propelled their popularity.

Insomniac looks great because they completely overdeliver, but this deal is better. All the new owner has to not be as incompetent as SE in managing these studios and IPs.

Where did you get that sony is interested in Ubisoft. I thought it was WB Games or atleast some of if not one or two studios?

I'd argue that guardian's of the galaxy was far better if not superior to marvel's avengers both critic and player wise reception. if it sold less is because of squares abysmal marketing of the game. and agreed, leave it to developers like insomniac and skybound who whoever else that knows that they are doing.

I don't know, too many rumors to track. I don't like them purchasing neither WB or Ubisoft. Really bad fits, this one would've been so much better.

This deal is so good that it make pretty much all past deals like Bungie, Activision Blizzard and Bethesda look like complete rip-offs.

Honestly this might be even better than Kadokawa buying From Software in 2014 an absolute bargain. So much could be done with these studios and IPs and it's not like they were exposed as bad devs, SE was the one that apparently made sure their games tanked by misusing them.

Yeah too many, but the only one I've seen is. despite being a rumor as well, is sony is interested other than microsoft and EA in WB games.

300 million sounds like a steal for these IPs and studios. I wonder if Sony, MS and Tencent were even aware of how low the price would be? They must’ve been aware of how low the asking price was?

I wonder if it’s a little bit of Microsoft can’t move or else threaten their Activision deal, and Sony doesn’t want to move for fear that the Microsoft deal gets waved through lol

300m for proven IPs, a couple of studios and the only AAAA studio. Absolute steal and this explains how SE kept fucking over the western studios. We all thought the western division would be sold off but no one expected it would be sold for peanuts.
This make me think SE is going the same way as Konami, saying that they'll use the money in blockchain, AI, and cloud is completely out of touch with reality and shows how bad their leadership is.

MS is really close to Crystal Dynamics and Tomb Raider, really strange that they were not willing to pay for them. I wouldn't be surprised if we found out SE closed this deal without shopping it around first like the Houston Texans with DeAndre Hopkins.

Sounds more like owning those 3 branches + publishing rights of their in development games. Tomb Raider alone cost Microsoft $100M for just 1 year exclusive nearly a decade ago. Reading through it it's clear that they only got the devs and temporary publishing rights of games that are still in development.

Makes a little more sense if it was that.

edit: It doesn't look like that's the case, they seem to be getting the IP rights.

I can only see this as a good thing. All I want is a new Deus Ex game (whether it's completely new or finishing Adam Jensen's arc), and Squenix weren't going to make one. This raises the chances significantly.

Why wouldnt Sony be interested in Tomb Raider, Deus EX and the studios?

Plus, it's only 300M

It won’t change the price of SE
Lara being introduced in Uncharted would made them more than 300m and they would even have bought a studio suitable to take over the franchise, allowing Naughty Dog to move on from it. Imagine if you are playing Uncharted and the "antagonist" that is looking for the same treasure shows up and it's none other than Lara Croft, would've been great.

This is such a steal that it makes other publishers look bad and makes you wonder if they aren't being overvalued.

Square Enix selling these IPs and studios for peanuts in order to invest in NFTs sounds like satire. It would make a funny joke or sketch if it wasn’t true.
They'll soon reach Konami levels of disfunction at this rate. We better enjoy their good games while they last.

SE was smart to do this. These companies were dead weight carried by a wounded giant. They should continue to divest until they are small enough to focus on just a few games at a time.

Ironically, Konami is doing better than ever in terms of financial results.
That's not what I care about and it's not like actually being capable of producing games would be a bad thing for them financially. I bet a bunch of mobile publishers are doing great as well, for now. I don't even know where Konami profits are coming from, they are into some weird business in Japan.

Imagine owning as many great IPs like Konami and being completely unable to do anything with them, absurd.

It not that they are unable i think they just don't care to be honest
Which is a shame to have such great IPs like Metal Gear, Silent Hill & Castlevania
& do nothing video game wise with it is unforgiveable to us gamers

This is what i think chatter was we heard last year that Square was not happy with Western Studios. Glad this happened actually.

Square was spread too thin for the longest time and honestly having them focus on eastern made games will strengthen their brand instead of having a mix bag of middling tomb raider's, Just cause, ect.

I wonder if eastern part of Square now thats its leaner, will be bought now by Sony?

Why the fuck Just Cause is staying Square. I want next game and for it to be good. Granted I had fun with all 4, but 4th was my least favorite.

Wtf only $300 million And Sony and Microsoft couldn’t afford this?

No idea what the fuck is going on. How can you spend $3.6billion for bungie or $70 billion for Activision and pass on a cheap purchase for two fantastic studios like this.

Edy: actually nvm this is a good thing that they have stayed multiplatform.

Well, they do release s few A and B tier titles so I hope that they bring back a few o Eidos more obscure franchises such as Kane and Lynch. Btw, wasn’t Crystal Dynamics helping with Perfect Dark dev?

And you told us MS is going to buy them when their game is good:

probably if it end being good Ms will buy both (CD studios) when perfect dark end 😂

probably but if this crazy thing happen i see square enix sell crystal d. to Ms before

Ms and CD have a very strong relation and they could make easily a rival of naughty dog game with proper funds Ms know this

How is that strong relationship looking now?
