Sony ‘could be working’ to bring proper PS3 game emulation to PS5

Its literally impossible. The PS5 literally cannot handle the Cell's power.
You wrote "literally" twice and yet PS3 emulators exist on PCs weaker than the PS5. Emulators done by people with no connection with Sony.
I'm sure they could do it too and i'm sure they are working on it. They took almost 10 years to give us username changes...they will take time for this too.

Those PS3s won't be running forever and if Sony plans on opening up streaming to more countries (which they said they would) they will need to figure this out.

It's incredible how the badly planned PS3 is still giving headaches over 15 years after it came out. Starting with the hardware and going for their online infrastructure.

Obviously not without consent and permission. But your acting like they havent been dealing with publishers?

They have already dealt with plenty of publishers for PS3 games for the PSNOW streaming they have bene doing for years.
And they dealt with plenty of 3rd party licenses for bringing over PS1/PS2/PSP games to PS3 and Vita and now again supposedly with PS + Premium.

Plus no excuses for 1st party games like Killzone, Resistance, Sly, Motorstorm etc are all 1st party

Its a lot of due diligence. Old contracts will need to be checked over in case there are any sublicensing issues in place (music, likenesses, branding etc.) that might pose a problem if the original code/data isn't altered. Then they'd need to locate the primary rights-holder which may not be easy as ownership could have changed hands in the intervening years, and only then can negotiations be started on republishing rights.

As I've said in the past, the further back in time you go, the messier it gets especially if the original contracts didn't include provision for sale under the terms that a modern publishing deal entails.

Sony's original approach of hardware-level backwards compatibility really side-stepped all this, but on PS4/PS5 where there really is no option but to implement in software and redistribute digitally everything needs repackaging, and repackaging involves legal.

The issue with the argument about "what about their fully self-owned IP" is that while it does simplify part of the process, its only a relatively small sliver of the total content and so changes the opportunity cost calculation of building an emulator. If you're total pool is down to a few dozen titles why bother with a generalized emulation in the first place? Why not simply repackage with some sort of wrapper and sell as an actual PS4/PS5 .pkg? If only to see the sort of interest shown its far and away the smarter option.

The other thing to consider is that if PS3 emulation is only possible on PS5 level hardware, then the addressable market is way smaller than an offer on both PS4 and PS5. So again the opportunity cost versus ROI calculation skews away from practicality.

One way I can tell that PS2 and PS3 BC is still important is my own personal reaction to Sony's new tiered PS+ strategy. As a long-time PS+ subscriber my reaction to the new announcement: Let's wait and see what games are included in the second tier. I have zero interest in streaming whatsoever.

However, if they had announced full local PS2 and PS3 BC was supported in the second tier, it would be an immediate no-brainer purchase. This reaction alone shows I strongly value BC and miss not having it.

My PS3 phat is still hooked-up up (to a 3D tv!) for PS2 & PS3 BC, and also keep an old PS3 slim as backup once the phat inevitably fails. Would love to pass these old systems on but sadly have to keep them since my games are stuck there. Not sure why gamers of all people don't understand these old libraries are important memories we like to revisit.

Sony Interactive Entertainment could be working to bring PlayStation 3 games to PlayStation 5 without the requirement to stream them over the internet.

That’s according to Venturebeat journalist Jeff Grubb, whose sources have reportedly indicated that behind the scenes Sony could be working on an emulation solution for PS3 games on PS5.

Earlier this week Sony announced that it would be bringing classic games to its latest console via its new PS Plus Premium subscription.
When it launches in June for $17.99/£13.49 a month, subscribers will gain benefits including access to 340 games from the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3 and PSP generations.

However, while the majority of those games will be available to download and play on PS5 via emulation, Sony confirmed that PS3 games would only be playable via cloud streaming.

According to Venturebeat’s Grubb, however, the service could eventually receive PS3 emulation similar to the other retro systems it’s set to support.
“Since talking about this all week, I’ve looked, I’ve asked… it sounds like Sony might be working on emulation for PS3 on PS5,” he said. “It may take some time.
“I wish they would come out and tell us that. Tell us that you care about this stuff because that is what was missing from the PS Plus announcement… to me, it seemed like they didn’t care about any of it. They just slapped it together, put a new name on it and sold it”.

While this hasn’t been stated publicly, the consensus is that due to the unique architecture of the PS3 and its infamous Cell processor, emulating the system within the PS5 in software (in the same way that the Xbox Series X emulates an Xbox 360) would be incredibly difficult.

However, fans aren’t convinced. YouTuber and developer at Night Dive Studios ModernVintageGamer tweeted in the wake of this week’s announcement that emulating the PS3 on the PS5 was “absolutely possible” but that “Sony has never been interested in investing the millions to make it happen”.

Currently, many classic PlayStation games are currently only playable natively on the PlayStation 3, including Metal Gear Solid 4, and entries in the InFamous, Resistance, Ratchet & Clank and Killzone series.

VGC’s Jordan Middler wrote in a column this week that he was disappointed by how Sony seemingly continues to overlook the classic console.
“It’s truly a shame to see how PlayStation continues to treat its third generation. Much of what’s so good about the platform now, namely its focus on big, shiny first-party experiences was birthed from the PS3.

“The excuses about how technically challenging it might be to get PS3 games running natively on the PS5 hold less and less water as more emulators emerge in the PC scene, running on hardware far below that of a PlayStation 5.”

From VGC

Remember the several emulation patents with "instant remaster" that exchanges the textures if higher resolution ones were available?

Also keep in mind that for the Demon's Souls remake, the team at Bluepoint had the game running on PS5...

They'll need to do something to replace those Cell server blades down the line. I'm sure they already have a working one internally for such a task.

But he said it himself, it is "much requested", so I don't see why it is not done by now
I am not sharing my own opinion here but if you try to understand what he is saying you will see what he is trying to say is basically this → they've tried offering backwards compatibility (they did it with PS2 and then did it again with PS3 launch units) — but to reduce the cost of the system and to bring the price down, they had to remove features and one of the features they removed first was backwards compatibility and that decision was likely based on data they had on its usage.

Personally, I am with those who want backwards compatibility but it is not a deal breaker for me because of PS5's currently library and future. I also happen to have a Polymega so I am covered for playing PS1/SNES/Genesis games etc. I have already copied a lot of games I own for those systems to the device. But even I am learning that I don't turn the thing on as often as I thought I would have. 😬 But I will say that it is nice to know that I can.

Maybe they're planning to improve how PS3 games run on PS Now. Like making a "cloud emulator" to improve PS3 games (better textures, resolution, fps etc).

That way PS4/PS4 Pro could get all the improvements without the necessary hardware.

Streamable or downloadable what I seriously hope is they can up the resolution for these ps3 games, as of right now they look like shit on 4k tvs. For the moment I have zero incentive to unplug my ps3 as PS now doesn't offer any advantage over it.

Its worth, they save money, people downloading games and playing locally than rendering on the cloud on the PS3 farm. Besides they are not producing PS3 hardware anymore, so reducing cloud rendering would be benefit in long term
If it worth it they would have done it by now
it clearly not worth it lol

I dont think a global solution would be feasible. The PC emulators have taken how many years and still not really all the way there?

Maybe the inside knowledge Sony have of the architectures could offset that though

Sony have got emulation for PS1, 2 and 4 going so I don't think it's an issue of them not wanting to do it but whether it is actually doable

Perhaps instead they could do it game by game? I think that's what Xbox did, and maybe what they've hired the likes of Nixxes for instead of PC ports

For those with BC PS3's, there's a new method of extending your console's lifespan: it's the called frankenstein.
Basically, you swap your old 90nm RSX for a 40nm one.

Xbox is all under 1 system. They didnt change their OS, like Sony did. So its easy for them to bring it down 1 by one. Plus they spent alot of time on fps boost.
Sony would have a lot of time, trying to port these games. And the main obstacle, would be license.

As for the pc emulation, these people have limited resources, unlike Sony. I have no idea, why Sony cant hire them. They would save them alot of money.

At this point, xbox would be able to run ps3 games, before ps5 is able to do it.

I'll buy an xbox if I can play my PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs.

Don't say that, Sony should acknowledge their heritage !!!

If that videos doesn't make you feel emotions (engine) then you're not worthy of that avatar !!!

I only need a remaster of that PS1 startup on PS5, but not the games. PS3 was fun 15 years ago, let it go.

When I'm 60 years old I think I would be excited to play Sony's next AAA game on PS10.
You see, the mind is very fickle thing. It changes you, as you age older.
Whatever passion you have for the new games now, would disappear when you get old.
You would want to relive your past memories, instead of making new memories.

That is just human nature. You cant go against it, not matter what.

Honestly speaking, I doubt it massively. Maybe watch a few minutes on youtube at best of said game. Play it? Impossible.

Also I have far more memories than gaming, and despite I love gaming a lot, games are disposable to me. My best game ever is GOW 2018, but beaten it and moved on.

You are still not in that stage.
I have read alot of manga, and anime. I am very fondly on the old animes, because it created a connection with me. That connection, is what will tie you to the game.

You will need that connection. You will get it, as you get older, and appreciate what it offers to you. Also expanding your reach, helps you understand those feeling more.

There is a reason why people like castlevania and metal gear games.

I love Metal Gear games, they're one of my favorites and the favorite series when growing up. Won't touch any of them today, actually all of them play like shit except MGSV, which plays great with shit story instead.

People have very different mindest, and trust, those nostalgia guys are the extreme minority. This forum is filled with boomers and semi-boomers, that's why you think so.

You have eye candy then. Guess gaming isnt your suite. Your interest lies somewhere else.
Do you perhaps enjoy reading old books, or watching old movies without a problem? If so, then those are were your precious memories lie.

For me, its movies and books. Because they are the big reason, who I am now. I get lost, when I am indulged in those 2 activities, compared to games, which I get burn out fast.

I would say music, not books nor movies. I like some new music here and there, and enjoy it, but older music suits me perfectly.

Also my older photos/videos as I'm a photographer/videographer.

They are capable to make it work. They have the design documents, a speedy CPU in the PS5, and the money to hire decent engineers. There are multiple ways to tackle the problem at hand, but high-level emulation should absolutely be possible on the given hardware. Hell, they could even go the Xbox route and make a translation layer that maps the PS3 APIs to PS5 equivalents. That could very well be possible even on PS4 with its janky Jaguar processor as Microsoft has shown with 360 on Xbone.

But none of it matters. Sony is unwilling. There's no point in speculating either. Sony will announce it once they're ready, and that could very well be never.

Proper PS3 emulation on PS5 is a pretty tricky thing for Sony, and not just for creating a functional emulator.

According to the dev of the best PS3 emulator for PC and an Sony engine programmer who worked during the PS3 days in ICE team and Insomniac PS3 can't be completely emulated (all games, full performance, no bugs) in PS5 hardware due to tech limitations and to do it properly would require additional hardware inside the console.

As far as I remember it was because of sustained performance of a part of the processors when running several of them at the same time. PS3 was able to keep all of them at high performance constantly while modern processors only achieve that in peaks or something like that. Plus also the way of how they were synchronized with the memory or somethting like that.

With a good amount of work they could emulate some games that don't take full advantage of the hardware. The ones that take full advantage can't be properly emulated in PS5.

I think it would be easier for Sony or the 3P publishers to simply remaster or remake for PS4/PS5 the remaining key PS3 games that still don't have a PS4/PS5 remaster or remake. In the case of Sony maybe would be Motorstorm, Killzone, Resistance, LBP and Infamous collections and in the case of Konami, MGS4. And then maybe do partial emulation to add some secondary games who don't take full advantage of the console.

No fucking way dude, this isn't like old Intel CPU where the clock would collapse when executing heavy AVX. These CPUs can sustain their maximum clock all times. The only problem is, yes, the different way caches work. But with enough hard work they can find ways to compensate for it.

I still have PS3 and PS2 lying around. No CRT anymore, and generally. Cannot bring myself to play any PS2 games. I did play RFOM 3 on PS3 few months ago, and it wasn't bad experience.

I want to stick my ps3 discs into my ps5.
If this is not possible fuck off and don’t even bother serving me luke warm streaming only wank

Id take the middle ground of being able to buy and download PS3 games. I have like 2 PS3 games so I wanna buy and download more
