Hi there. Since I didn't find a proper forum for the sites meta, or suggestions thread/forum I just post this here and if it needs to be moved then move it to the proper space.

What I wanted to suggest to the mod/admin team is that upon closing threads, it could be good that you left a last message in said thread clarifying the reason of closing. This is obviously not for the OP since they get the reason in a notification. But for the people visiting said thread, since sometimes it's hard to tell why a thread was closed, and people don't know if it was because it was a dup, a new one took its place, broke any rule, OP requested closing, etc etc.
Also it acts as a good example for what people shouldn't be posting (i.e. Politics, like all the Jim Ryan threads getting closed).

They don't do it for bans, why would they do it for locked threads? Read the TOS.
A. Moderation of NeoGAF is not by democracy. All decisions with regards to thread closure and movement, permanent and temporary bans, membership, and any other relevant issues are made by the NeoGAF administration alone and are final. That being said, constructive criticisms and suggestions are welcome, provided they are directed to NeoGAF Administration via e-mail, here. Do not dispute administrative policy or action within the forum itself.

I'm just cracking jokes. I think the main reason they close things is largely because they just want high quality threads with a little more effort, personally. But I can't read minds!

Reviewing the recent locked threads half them were trying to dodge the no politics rule while bringing up Sony's response to their studios getting political on Twitter, and the other half were bullshit Abandoned "leaks" that just gives attention to a scam.

Sometimes the reason is the warning that you can't see because you're already banned........
I got banned without a warning with a "take the week off" reason.

Mods need to work on the ban reasons first, which is pretty basic, then get to the threads.
Politics should be back too. Never once posted on politics threads, but pretty much limits some discussions, considering how it's hard to keep politics out of western media, let alone games.

Again. This thread IS NOT to discuss why or what they close and if they should or not. It's about leaving a message on the thread stating the reason of closure.

Agreed. So annoying seeing a perfectly good thread closed with no explanation. At least post the reason as to why you close it

Bless the person who closed the silent hill leak spam threads. That is all I have to say. I understand gaf needs activity, but not like that. We really need a rule about leaks, they're getting out of control and most are just spamming them for karma points.
Why do people even farm karma? Is there a prize for x amount of reacts? I need to know!

I've never had an issue communicating with a mod. You've just got to understand they are real-life people with jobs/lives. They may not get back to you immediately but they will eventually. Unless you're being a rude asshole or something lol.
Didn't state anything of what you said, in the OP. I don't have any problem nor have had troubles communicating with the mod team when necessary. This is an entirely different topic.

That was more a response to some other users comments in this thread. I should have directly replied to them.

I really can't recall any thread getting closed that left me really scratching my head.

Its some pretty simple rules to follow here and some people really want to push and bend the rules and its usually the same people over and over again

2 way communication with mods is almost non existent.

How much do you get feedback from messaging mods or submitting reports?
I normally get feedback, I don't get which mod is the idiot that gave me a warning, but I do get the reason.

The mods do a good job to me, but if they do something to warn me......they are idiots.

Don't ban me. :)

I thought about that too. I saw a closing comment from one of the staff members in that grubb rumor thread, but that's mostly it.

I guess the assumption is that you should be able to figure out in the nature of the thread in terms of why it closed. A proper 1-2 sentence comment could suffice for users perhaps.

I see it the opposite way too, it's something I appreciate when what seems like a thread I was going to comment on gets closed down (sometimes just before getting foolishly caught up in the anger or LOLs that eventually got the thread pulled down..), I now know why and have a good sense of how the MODs are helping foster the larger community.

MODing is not a negative, when done well, and although the closing of a thread is often out of an unfortunate circumstance (though not always a negative reason,) the end result is hopefully for the good of the GAF. So I appreciate hearing from the MODs who take action, and I welcome the MODs to see it as a positive and to communicate the reason as a benefit for the discourse. (Where possible, of course.)

….do you have some sort of acronym that’s associated with “MOD?” Or are you yelling that word for some reason?

Heh, I just always saw it capped back when I learned the term. I guess it doesn't stand for anything but Moderator, so it would just be Mod or mod.

No inflection intended.

I agree. Sometimes I get the impression some thread gets locked because it's a repeated one, but in this case I'd merge the threads instead of closing them. Other cases the reason is obvious, but in many cases isn't, so would be nice to know the reason. It would help to avoid future similar threads (which would end closed too).

One of mine got merged earlier on the covers, but it only had like 2 posts. Probably performance related or summat

My thread was closed with zero givens reason. I didn't even get messaged about it.

If I had broken the rules then at least let me know I broke the rules. I sent a very polite message to the mods in the contact section asking why. I think I even asked if it was to do with console warring as per the sticky and stated my reason for why I felt it wasn't as far as I recall. (My memory is a bit hazy on my precise words to be transparent).

It would have been nice to be given a reason for getting my thread locked. I wasn't trying to argue, just trying to find out. This was a good few days ago and no reply yet similar threads to mine debating the other side of the argument have been created and not locked since.

Some sort of response would be good so I least know what precisely I did wrong so I don't make the same mistake in the future. Fair enough I think. I check my message inbox every day to make sure I don't miss it.

For bans, I've seen that sometimes when the offense is egregious enough, the mod will even have a link to the offending post. Unless the post itself is straight up offensive or harmful, in which case the post gets nuked. (I look at the ban page from time to time when I wonder where a previously very active user has gone...)

For threads, even if there's no message you can clearly tell from the content. Like others have said, it's usually political or console-warring shit. In the rare case it's not one of those two, it's usually a violation of the TOS or otherwise spammy/low quality threads.

(For example: that "Craig of War" dude is kind of spamming the main gaming forum recently, with some threads of questionable quality; so I wouldn't be surprised if some of his threads get shut down)

Yeah why was my thread about Meta taking a shot at PC & Consoles closed? I seen people in the thread saying that it didn't have anything to do with Metaverse but the facebook post clearly said "Welcome to the Metaverse"
