Xbox is bigger than PS5 this week?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Where are the users saying that Sony's situation in Japan wasn't that bad?

Xbox series outsold ps5. Wow. No one thought that would EVER happen in Japan

wow did the Series sell more than PS in home country.
They sold 50 000 PS5s the last 2 weeks and there was no more stock for this week. This thread really needs more context before you guys celebrate for no reason 🤣

I love the way fanboys can switch it up a moments notice.
When both consoles were sold out and the Sony was making more PS5s than MS could make Xboxs, the fanboys were lapping up the sales advantage as proof of Sony's continued domination.
Now they have flipped and the Xbox is outselling PS5, while both being still sold out, all of a sudden those same fanboys are talking about how it doesn't mean anything because of Chip shortages.

Both consoles are going to do well this gen and it is going to be alot closer than last gen.
Microsoft are going to be very happy with how the Xbox goes, and Sony will be happy with how the PS5 goes.
That's a great outcome for everyone besides fanboys.

Nah this shit is whats sad

So to the idea that the PS5 has sold that number of consoles in Japan is not correct, the problem is that no one knows what split is for scalped units. The only thing you can do is to try and extrapolate some sold through numbers by guesstimating from software sales which have been consistently in the <3 k range outside of a few big titiles like RE8, Tales of Arise and Elden Ring.

Having sold 1.6 mill consoles it would make no sense to only sell <3000 copies to that audience. So its a anyones discretion to try and figure out what the actual numbers of PS5 in are. They are not 1.6 million - and iirc there was a suggestion once that half of the consoles were scalped. But even that doesnt tally up with the software sales. There is good chance that the total of PS5s are a fair bit lower than half of the shipped numbers in my view seeing how the PlayStation software sales have totaly cratered in Japan.

This is interesting. What have Sony done to upset the Japanese? Maybe closing the Japanese studio and saying they wanted to make more American games?

lol.

PS5 overall sales are still horrible, them having sold 50 k PS5 in the last 2 weeks or not.

Sony needs consistency with their stock if they want to build a good install base, not one or two good weeks.

What's really bad is the software sales. Without doing the math, I estimate the attach rate to be less than 1.

Xbox presence in Japan is still non existant. The fact of xbox having sold better than the PS5 is just to point out just how HORRIBLE Sony has been treating/ignoring Japan.

The real winner here is Nintendo, and honestly, Sony nor MS can hold a candle against it in Japan or anywhere in the world. It keeps baffling me how people ignores Nintendo when talking about consoles, but I guess its a way to cope with someone being too strong, its easier to ignore it.

This is really well done info, cudos. Yea, I wish there was a way for Sony to track their actual units in where they go region wise. Because wasn't it getting reported that literally shipments of PS5's were coming into Japan, and being bought by scalpers and being shipped out to other territories. My guess in which territory primarily was china.

Wish there was more info as the discrepancy in software to me is proof of what you said. The good news is scalping has calmed down a bit, but with lockdowns in CHina I feel scalping and backchannels shipping to places is still on going. Is there any info from Japanese retailers in how they have tried to combat this?

Or is it just to large of an issue?

Calm down. We're not saying it's done big victory. It's still shocking though. Did the Xbox One ever outsell the ps4? Or the 360 outsell the ps3 in Japan? Maybe the latter since ps3 was very undesirable but the last two gens Sony has been strong so it's shocking. We get there are supply issues. Microsoft has supply issues too. That's why the series s is brilliant. Ms can manufacture those easier and they're selling. With it the series consoles have outsold the ps5 in Japan for one week. Still pretty shocking

All these Xbos are being bought and shipped to other Asian markets. It's not big in Japan.

Ps5 stock pathetic.
You really think a large series s resell price to warrant demand after shipping and all that out of Japan? Really? I’m sure some are being resold but not everyone.

It's not really about "upsetting" anyone.

To make a long story short, PlayStation's success in Japan was based on Japanese third parties providing exclusive software with a large appeal.

In the past 15 years or so, the Japanese franchises which were big on PS1 and PS2 have largely declined in popularity (Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Warriors etc.) and there hasn't been a lot of big appeal franchises from Japanese third parties to replace them. Those new or growing third party franchises that have appeared (such as Monster Hunter, Yokai Watch and Momotato) have either not appeared on PlayStation or not been exclusive to it.

The only Japanese company that has been successful at having new and/or growing franchises with big appeal has been Nintendo, hence there success in the market.

I see Switch but not the other previous gen consoles there. Would be nice to see PS4 too in these graphs.
PS4 sold 22 units this week, so it would not make too much difference. Although the charts do refer to "PlayStation family", so maybe PS4 is included in some charts?

It would make an important difference in the cumulative charts. If they include Switch numbers since 2017, why not to include PS4 numbers since 2014?

The PS4 games and consoles are still being sold, even if these graphs only cover a few dozen of the thousands of games in the market, and only cover physical games that are under half of the game sales in PS. Many poeple don't buy a PS5 because they are always sold out and they continue buying and playing PS4 games.

Yes as you can't either console in many East Asian markets.

It's ytd cumulative numbers. So it's reset at the start of the year.

But unless I'm missing something those charts are not showing total cumulative numbers or any software numbers. It is only hardware numbers in calendar year 2022.

For any software charts PS4 should definitely be included.

I wonder what the excuses will be when the PS5 is well stocked and this happens again
