That’s true. If not for Ocarina (and Kojima), it would be an easy choice for the most overrated game of all-time.
Great first post and overall contribution to this thread.

I pity people who never get to enjoy great stories like this due to their chronic shit-goggles.

Keep on keeping on.

Made more progress since last post:

-Vincent joined the crew
-Went to Shanghai Village and the Captain joined our cause
-Yuffie robbed us blind, potentially has ties to Shinra
-Saved Yuffie and the female Turk
-Corneo is dead most likely, fell from a cliff
-Bartender in Shanghai tipped me off as to Rufus' whereabouts

Yuffie is young so I'm gonna let this slide but she really fucked the team over with that little stint she pulled. She better make up for it because she left us hanging out in the wild without any Materia to hold us down in the fields when we battled. Not sure what her agenda is but she really caused a lot of trouble. I'd be less upset about it if there were answers but the section ended with us merely adding her back to the team with no questions asked. We're essentially in the dark about her motives, whether she's friend or foe, etc. I'll see where it goes but until she proves herself true in the story again I'l probably disregard her mostly, and won't be leveling Yuffie up as much as the rest for a while

Captain Cid is probably my favorite addition yet. The entire Shanghai Town section was great. I'll post some pics next time and go into more detail

All out warfare. It was us vs Shinra and their monsters, beasts specifically this swarm. Resources are needed and I understood quickly that this guy was serious about defending his land so I put in 30,000 gil to fortify the base and withstand the enemy. First battle was won but it was hard fought. Cloud filled in as commander that day and lead our troops to victory past Shinra's beasts as they invaded

More random FFVII trivia for you: if you undertake the Wutai sidequest late enough in the game, the average player actually has TOO MUCH Materia for Yuffie to steal all of. I forget the limit to what she can steal, but I had a working little set up of non-optimized, bench warming material for the segment.

Cid & Barrett were my main dudes... Red and Tifa were also fun, but the other 2 made my main 3.
Those are strong choices to have on the front lines. I like to give them all time out in the fields and vary it up often. Mainly because all of them have been badly damaged and hurt by the Shinra regime, Sephiroth. Can't have any single team member going too long without any action; some enemies to fight. It's kinda tough right now seeing Yuffie's side because she's such a dumbass, but if she wants to stick by us and continue to help fight after her mishap then she's still with us as far as I'm concerned. It's forgiven. But damn was that a stupid mistake on her part

Your post just gave me an idea I'm gonna have to try. No idea if it'll work any better than any other character, but from here on out I'm going to assign Steal + All Materia to Yuffie and see if she can grab for us more items than what we would normally be able to take from our enemies, on average

I don't think that Command Materia like Steal/Deathblow/Morph, etc works with All Materia, but take heart, you can do some downright STUPID combinations later on with things that I won't spoil for you.

Something I didn't know myself, but
late game, there are a lot of unobvious synergies between command materia, support materia, and one certain complete/independent materia. I never clued in on these synergies before, but regular synergies with late-game materia were pretty OP for just about everything at the end..

It's absolutely ridiculous what can happen late-game... it's enough to say be willing to experiment, because some of it is not the most intuitive IMO. But it's really fun to unleash.

But yeah, thinking like that (Steal + All) suggests he's moving in the right direction. 👍

I tend to get super tunnel vision, I'm not a great RPG player in terms of having a vision of the possibilities of a combat system, and materia was like that for my first playthrough. But experimenting in a 2nd playthrough way back in the day yielded some fun stuff.

After reading here I'm not sure if I should give it another try. I was turned off by the wood-like characters who look ugly as fuck and I much prefer the look of FFVI.

However, I also like these JRPGs way more than the anime shit it is now because of modern graphics, that typical anime acting and voice over they can do now with newer tech.

Just recently finished Cosmic Star Heroine and was having a blast, although it could have been an hour shorter.

Played the Remake of FFVII until I couldn't stand it anymore after the part where Cloud tries to rescue Tifa by doing stupid errands, cross dressing and try to get to that fat fuck owning that whore house. One tube level after another and weird and awkward scenes with Cloud and Aerith trying to high five. Why the fuck can't they be even a little bit normal? Then the constant grunts, noises characters make. It's just too much.

This is something I probably won't see in older JRPGs like the original. I probably should get over the ugly figurines.

Kjata sounds familiar, I might have gotten that one. It's one of the red materia right?
Yes. The one you get by looping a few times on the infinite forest.

There are a small number of missable materias in the game, mostly red summon type, mostly because the area they where in becomes inaccessible after the story happens.
It's not like they are well hidden, but I've seen people miss them in plain sight.

If you dont like those things in the remake the I dont think the original FFVII is for you either to be honest.

A lot of people who haven't played it would probably love it - if only they'd leave their edginess and jadedness at the door.

I have a hard time imagining you enjoying FF7, seeing how you're unable to suspend your disbelief in 7 remake, as you'll have to see past:

-Janky graphics
-Doll-like characters (chibi) with insinuated body language
-Poor translations where a lot of meaning is packed into undertones (you'll have to read between the lines a lot)
-Inflated expectations
-'Illogical' checkpointing (this is a new one I've observed and one I don't agree with).

I wonder if Square has Remake "Intermission"s planned for all the side characters. I would consider anyone outside of those you meet in the slums, a side character for this.

I think I'd enjoy more content from the other characters.

And I realize I don't like neither Red's goofy voice or Cid's weird scottish(?) accent in Advent Children

I'm Late to this thread, but I do love this game. I am somewhat taken aback that you are playing it on Switch, but I understand that is one of the paths of least resistance in order to play it. I just don't think PS1 style graphics look good upscale, etc. with modern displays. I still go back and play this one (and FF VIII) from time to time on my PS1 hooked up to my CRT. It's a shame that CRTs are getting (or are) hard to find these days. I remember 10 years ago, when flat screens were getting more prevalent, you could walk into Goodwill and there would be an entire back wall of CRTs, good ones, and they were SUPER cheap.
Anyway, I degress, this game is awesome. The atmosphere of Midgar, the climax of the Shinra building, the opening up of the overworld, the chasing of Sephiroth, different locations with very different aesthetics (Midgar, Juno, Costa Del Sol, Gold Saucer, Wutai, Northen Crater, etc.) Have fun with this one, I hope you get lost in the world. It is a fun one!

Something shocking happened last playthrough. Aeris was killed. Sephiroth came out of nowhere from above and took her life

It felt kind of surreal seeing Cloud hold her and let her go. It's rare for me to feel anything sad in a video game first time playing through but so far FF games are 2/2. When I saw her drift deeper underwater it didn’t feel right at all. And the worst part is that the crew is still too weak to do anything just yet. Sephiroth is still strong enough to render us completely helpless; he's on a different level. Seeing the crew say their goodbyes to her was a tough moment. I had Barret and Nanaki with me, Nanaki howled towards the heavens and we all payed our respects before we did what we had to do

This playthrough is on the Nintendo Switch that I bought in Jan of 2019. The screen captures that are taken are directly from the game

Right now I’m climbing an ice mountain, and scaling it as we take time to warm ourselves back up to 38 degrees. Currently in an ice cavern and it’s frozen solid. The deepest blue colors I’ve seen are here in this ice cavern. And what’s more is that I’ve some secret intel from Cait Sith. Rufus will meet us at the top of this mountain…

Cloud Strife, Barret, and Nanaki are with me. They’re the ones that were present when Aeris died at the Forgotten Country so I’m finishing this next order of business with them close at hand

So much has happened in the last three gaming sessions. I'm going to attempt to recollect as much as I can here

This game has so much heart, to the developers and all involved in the creation and everything revolving around the game, it's a monumental game and experience for sure

Aeris was killed by Sephiroth. We then traveled up towards the snowy mountains and came upon a warm little snowy village. It was a nice village all in all but there was a real disturbing murder and abduction that took place in this one scientist's home. That home belonged to Aeris's parents. Aeris's mother was also an Ancient or Cetra, and the scientist that was questioning her must have fell in love at some point during his research. They created a happy home, until Hojo one day found the scientist, Aeris's father, and murdered him. The mother and her child were abducted and imprisoned for scientific experimentation and interrogation I believe

Cloud was given a snowboard by kid who badly injured himself while snowboarding himself, something his pops regretted as he was the one who gave him the board. From here, there was a moronic interaction on Shinra's part, and after that we snowboarded down the mountain. Found an ice cavern to explore, then we scaled the mountain climbing, and climbing. We actually almost froze to death, but an extremely kind fellow mountain climber who lost his partner in a climbing expedition saved us and offered us much at his house. He gave us warm shelter, a place to rest for as long as we needed and pleased. Offered us plenty of information, and advice as well, maybe even items to purchase? But this guy was a savior, one of the greatest allies yet. And with all his advice, we went for it again, this time warming ourselves up to 38 degrees Fahrenheit every stop so that we wouldn't freeze upon our ascent up the snowy mountain. We eventually made our way up and this is where things got fucking crazy

The plot essentially exploded in our faces like a bomb. The Reunion was taking place atop this mountain. It was all so puzzling and shocking. Sephiroth seemed to be offering us the truth, or at least it seemed that way. At first, I thought he was trying to deceive us, but he was actually trying to clue Cloud in on some points he never quite put together himself. I think only Cloud, and Tifa, Sephiroth, and maybe big MAYBE Barret know what is going on

I'll have to come back and reflect on it another time, but so much has happened during the last three sessions of FFVII. Curently, where I'm at now, Cid has assumed leadership under Barret's orders. Leadership has passed down from Cloud Strife (currently has extreme Mako Poisoning) to Tifa, to Barret for a brief moment, to Captain Cid. Tifa's staying by Cloud's side; he's in terrible shape. Nanaki requests that we visit them every now and again when speaking with out new leader Captain Cid

I've been really enjoying the Materia system as of late, and recently I battled at Mt. Condor and had to enter the battlefield myself since our troops and strategy could not hold off the Shinra's forces and monsters. 9,000 gil was left and I added another 5,000 gil to aid the military to defend itself. I'll be back in a reasonable amount of time to do more, I'm thinking about going out to battle a bunch in the fields and explore while Cid is at the helm leading everyone. I have Cid, Barret, and Vincent ready to go; that's who I'll be fighting with

I explored the tropical beach area, Corel, the now shut down Gold Saucer where Dio is at the front contemplating whether or not he should be in business at a time like this. Everyone is worried about Meteor. All the characters are talking about it. Shanghai Town too. Shinra apparently has a plan to destroy Meteor and they're working on it now, we eavesdropped thanks to Cait Sith and found out their plans. Huge Materia is going to be collected at Corel and Mt. Condor so I'll eventually be heading there when I'm ready

Yeah, those latest FFVII gaming sessions were some I'll never forget. I was actually not feeling too well on the night that I played and found out about Cloud's past and the plot involving Meteor, Weapon, the Shinra, Hojo, Cloud being a clone, Sephiroth, the Reunion, Tifa withholding information, all these shocking things at once. I went to bed with a slight fever, and it eventually turned into some kind of migraine and/or horrible sinus headache of some sort, and when I went to bed I was thinking about the story and Sephiorth and basically all that I had learned that night, trying to piece together what I had just witnessed. Trying to figure out what was really going on... But by that time, the headache came upon me, and I lay in bed kind of disoriented and was still thinking about the plot while all this was happening. Well, I was currently thinking about Sephiroth's role at that time, I was even remembering or playing the music (in my own head, that is) while I was thinking about all this, and then I became super paranoid and feared and felt that his ominous presence was near my door, right near the room's door. I was disoriented due to the onset of the migraine so I didn't know which direction I was turning in bed, paranoid while thinking Sephiroth was near me, the music playing in my head, and actual fear crept in even at some point because I didn't know what the fuck was going on. Yeah that was a trip. I've only had three or four migraines in my entire life so for it to happen right after having played a serious stretch of FFVII was interesting I thought. Kind of alarming and traumatic stuff. But on that night it was clear that the story is powerful and can have a huge impact on those playing the game. Definitely a memory I wont soon forget

EruditeHobo EruditeHobo thanks big dog

Some thoughts from the last gaming session or two:

Here name is Ifalna, Aeris's mother. It's been a while, but she was the one who collapsed dead at the train Station at Midgar with Aeris. Now I know, piecing the story together some that she was subjected to witnessing Shinra murder her lover and then kidnapping her, imprisoning her to find more about the Cetra. Hojo probably experimented on her relentlessly. She seemed to either feel a lot or exert herself fairly intensely during those taped sessions where she would recall her memories and tell of the secrets of the planet and such. So I have to imagine how ruthless and terrible Hojo must have been with his experiments and pushing her to give valuable information. I don't know how she died, but my guess is that Hojo experimented on her, it went wrong, and she escaped to Midgar with Aeris for one last mission: to free Aeris and taker her to a safe place where Shinra might have a tougher time tracking her and exploiting her, since she's an Ancient/Cetra

The home of Ifalna and her husband is also very interesting. The bed frame has recording tech of some kind it looks like. A tree is actually in the houng lowse serving as a pillar that holds up the first floor. I wonder how Shinra managed to find them in the first place now as well

Battled a lot today in the overworld and leveled up a bunch of Materia fighting as Cid, Barret, and Vincent. Barret is level 50 now and Cid/Vincent are level 49. I was at a shop earlier and the only two weapons that I could buy that would be of use were for Cait Sith and Yuffie. Was hesitant because they're both traitors but it's becoming more and more clear now that Shinra is just an unavoidable corporation with smothering force no matter where you go. If you're with them, it's like the men working Don Corneo said at the restaurant, they can eat like this because they're working for the boss. If you're with Shinra, you can live a little better because they have all the money on the planet basically. They've monopolized the very planet itself and not even life force or energy is safe from this corporation. I can't really blame Cait Sith or Yuffie for working with Shinra, they have control over everything, good folk and all. They did betray us, but the way I see it now: Shinra forced their hands. So at the weapons shop I bought the best weaponry available for Cait Sith and Yuffie - dropped about 21-22k gil and went on to explore some more

I wasn't even trying to, but I entered a tunnel in the overworld and saw a Mako Reactor open with Shinra guards standing by its entrance. I went to investigate and before I know it, Cid, Barrat, and Vincent all came out and we fought the soldiers. Dodged a train with Shinra controlling it and then all of a sudden Cid goes in and hijacks a small train himself. We caught up to the train with the Huge Materia on it and jumped onto the last cargo bed attached to the train. From there we battled a few tough enemies. I made a mistake and looked at Materia too long and I think the time was still going or something while I was looking in the menu. Fought the last enemy with like 2 min 19 seconds and by the time I had defeated the Shinra soldier controlling the train there was only like 37 seconds left. By the time Cid stopped the train there must have been about 12 seconds or less. I started pressing every button in a frenzy because I knew I was gonna fuck up the sequence otherwise

We saved Corel and received praise from the mining folk that Barret grew up. We were even given the shiny treasure in the well that the kid was talking about all that time as a prize. And a free stay at the Inn as well. The shiny item turned out to be like a Ultimate Meteor materia

Random thoughts:

-Vincent is a crazy ally to have. He's like part man, part vampire monster beast from hell. I like that he shoots guns too
-Cloud still can't speak. He tried to tell me something about a billion shattered mirror fragments... an angel singing, which number is he, a couple of other things too that I forget. Xeno Gears as well is what he said
-That other in father at Gonganga Village who haven't seen their son Zack in 10 years since joining SOLDIER, I almost wonder if Cloud is Zack........Because she was Aeris's first love, and there is something strange about Cloud's past. I sort of think that maybe Zack was experimented on and became Cloud? It's a wild guess, but who knows, it may end up being true
-The folks up in the Snowy Village don't seem to be as well informed as the rest of the people around the world. They didn't mention Meteor I don't think, but instead called it a shining light in the sky. The threat was still evident, but many if not all were not referring to it as Meteor. It's no wonder that Ifalna's husband would travel there if this ends up being true
-One NPC at Gonganga Village said you can't trust Shinra when she spoke about them having Huge Materia and their plans with it. That's why it's up to Cid and the rest to claim them
-I still feel bad for taking those baby birds' 10 Phoenix Downs left in their nest lol

Your guess is not spot on, but also not far.

The game has a lot of heart indeed, it doesn't pump it like a clock, there's bursts, but a lot of heart nonetheless. I can understand why it turned out to be the hit on PSone and I'd be over the moon if they could just re-render everything in HD.

We successfully defended Mt. Condor and defeated the Shinra in the war. They were fierce and came in unbelievable swarm; enough to wipe out my troops and forces handily but when Cid, Barret, and Vincent stepped into battle we won easily. If I had known the battle would have been that easy with us heading to the front line then I'd have just went and spared all the troops and equipment from destruction. We received the Huge Materia from the General's father, and then we headed to Mideel to visit Tifa and Cloud

That was one hell of a segment there at Mideel Village. Tifa and Cloud in that cutscene as everything collapse behind them, and then they fall into the Lifestream. That was something special, retracing memories in Cloud's subconscious while in the Lifestream. We managed to find Cloud's true memories and who he really is, helping him to recover fully. But there ares still plenty of questions that remain. I'm going to most likely post a ton of pictures before I begin doing anything serious next. I want to see if I can see a pattern from any of the old screenshots, see if there is anything that I overlooked that can help piece together the story

Cid, Barret, and Vincent even fought Weapon. It was way beyond our strength level and would have killed us all had it not decided to leave mid-battle

I've been told that I'm about 70% finished with the game but it's difficult to tell. Whatever the case, my next mission is to explore more and battle more. To find more secrets and fortify my crew. We only need to get one more Huge Materia at Junon so I'll try to avoid that area if I can. But it might be difficult, I actually forgot where exactly Junon is... That's either in Midgar or it's near idk maybe where I saved Priscilla at the old port town taken over by Shinra? I can see us battling Weapon there by the shore or something unexpectedly

I loved the 7 remake (and XV which I played afterwards).
These were my first FF games somehow.

I am thinking about playing 7 classic. There is version on steam (pixelated) and windows store/PSN which have speed up features, turn off for random encounters and nice smooth graphics looking close to original.
OR I could get Playstation Classic... is that emulated version good in there? (and other games like RE and MGS?). Europe

Easiest is regrettably the pc ports on console. The truest/best is probably pc emulation of the psx.

For me personally, after having played the psx version 4 times, I would want to play it with AI upscaling and fan-voice acting..

Played FFVIIRI having never played the original. Absolutely loved it.

Just started FFVII for the first time last night. Really enjoying it so far.

It was always that one game I never played that I felt like I was the only one.

Battled what I believe to be the toughest foe in the entire game last night. It dealt 6,000+ damage in one hit to Barret. Lives at the bottom of the ocean
That's an optional superboss. So is the little red thing at the desert below Gold Saucer.
Don't bother with those unless you've mastered the end-game.

I returned to Midgar after what felt was like 60-70% of the game. Besides listening to the NPCs new comments about world events there wasn’t anything much different, but I missed this place a lot. The first thing I did was enter the church where the two children were and took a moment of silence looking at the flowers in honor of Aeris. It was a sad moment for me, not only because of Aeris, but because these two kids are alone in the church while the world outside is so bleak yet the seem happy to be there near those flowers. That spot perfectly describes the game imo. Maybe it’s just me and the way I think but that is my favorite spot in the entire game

We recently went to outer space and it was pretty crazy to see Captain Cid accomplish his dream. Well deserved, he’s one hell of a leader. Sacrificing his very dreams that he worked all his life for, for the safety of one teammate. And somehow living with that same person, the dude is a strong character and straight shooter. Rough dude, but I see no problems there. He’s already taken initiative to hijack the train Shinra had stored Huge Materia on, stole it, and saved Corel in one go. He’s looked after us all and lead us while Cloud was recovering and Tifa was caring for him in that troubled time. And now he’s safely lead us to outer space and back, of all places with no issues. In fact, he saved our lives on that mission by knowing what he was doing up there on that rocket of his

The only thing is, I didn’t manage to crack the passcode to get some Huge Materia to keep before the two minutes were up. I totally fucked that up when the pressure was on

Shinra’s plans were fairly elaborate and well thought out but ultimately they failed. It’s ironic that they wish to save the planet they’ve so thoroughly destroyed. It’s a miracle that the planet is still holding on after all the harm Shinra has brought to it

The story is still so much to take in, that even with all my attention to detail it’s still difficult to piece everything together. Right now I’d give the story 9.6/10

Level 60 now w/ Cloud

And one more thing, I went into an undersea cavern of some type beneath a waterfall. As I walked in with Cloud, Sephiroth’s name was called. And even Vincent’s…

You've missed Bahamut Zero summon then... Look it's animation online. Otherwise, you sound overleveled.

In that cave, you should visit with Vincent for some backstory.
While you are at it, you should visit the shinra manor and check the tubes in the underground laboratory for some Cloud backstory if my memory serves correctly.

wow, it looks like you're on cruise control now.
I think I beat the game at level 37-38.
I didn't do much optional stuff, though, except for Chocobo breeding.
I’ve spent a lot of time battling chumps, decent foes, and lately some tougher enemies in the fields. There’s spot I found that spawns some semi-worthy enemies. Three fights and I need to heal, any more fights and they’ll get close to finishing the fight if I don’t act quickly in battle. I’ve also gotten stuck maybe five to six times lulz. One time I got stick for like a week or two as well

Thanks. I did visit the very bottom of the Shinra Mansion and saw Cloud’s and Zach’s flashback. I’ll visit Vincent’s backstory next

I’ll likely play the Remakes of FFVII one day, can already tell I love this game. This all sort of takes me back… I’m playing on a Switch right, but this game’s vibe is 100% Playstation in feel, sound, looks and overall energy. It takes me back to memories of the mid 90s playing various PS1 games, watching Kids WB cartoons, and Nickelodeon

Right now I’m in the Slums, and they have it rough but the people are lively. Except this guy, who seems to be in some pain or trouble. My temporary partner said he’s sick

Midgar and its people seem to be on the brink. People are severely impoverished and lacking even the basics for life itself. I see these two kids in the broken down church, sanctuary and all they have are these flowers to tend to and help grow

*sigh*
I'm playing the pixel remaster of FF1 right now, and it's a beautiful game. Everything from the orchestral soundtrack to the spell animations is done with love. The QoL improvements are phenomenal: I'm under 20 hours and about to finish the game.
That game came out on the NES 30+ years ago. Between the PSX remaster, the PSP remaster, the iOS remaster, and now the pixel remaster, FF1 has had at least 4 pretty big overhauls. Same with FF2-6, in their own iterations.
Squeen spends so much time and effort updating those games to keep them current and keep them selling.
And I look at these screenshots of FF7 that you posted, and I want them to treat the game with the same love they treat FF1-6.
I want these backgrounds brought into HD.
I want the character models anatomically proportional with dynamic facial expressions.
I want the FMVs redone.
And I want it to still be FF7.
I don't want a new FF7, I want FF7 to look new.
And I want this for 8, and I want this for 9.
And here's the thing... this is all any Final Fantasy fan has wanted since about... what? 2000? I don't even remember, it's been so long.
When they announced the FF7 remake, I truly believe 99% of Final Fantasy fans going into that announcement expected a spruced up FF7.
It's what we'd always wanted.
The hype of the new game has won people over, and it's great, it's fantastic to experience Midgar like that... but it's not FF7.
It's just... the PSX-era FFs deserve so much better.

Visiting the Ghost Hotel at the Gold Saucer right now. Dio re-opened for business. This place is like the Las Vegas of FFVII lol

In the Items Shop, there’s this one red demon skull with white eyes that almost looks like some kind of demon-bunny’s skull. It’s just floating up and down inside of what I presume is some liquid filled glass capsule. I like this place, on the whole - they did a great job decorating
