"I Need a New PC!" 2022. The GPU drought continues...

$875 for a Gigabyte 3080 12GB. This is the single best deal I have seen on ANY GPU. If you want a GPU now, it's hard to recommend against this. I don't trust Gigabyte as much as I'd trust someone like EVGA, but at this price it's worth considering. For the record, I have never had any bad experiences with Gigabyte motherboards

My GTX 1070 Ti is from Gigabyte. No issues whatsoever.

This weekend for memorial day I had family come visit and my sister walks into my room while I'm playing FF14 on my rtx 3090 and she's like "why is it so hot in here, is something wrong with the heating?" and I'm like "no it's my PC, just put your hand behind it" and then she does and is like "ah!"
I hope rtx 4xxx cards aren't furnaces too lol

If everything is to be believed, nvidia is saying "Fuck it" to things like power draw and going pedal to metal. 1000W power supplies will be the recommended. If performance is all that matters, then I guess it's good, but with energy costs going up I feel like nvidia will very quickly have to focus on efficiency for the following gen.

The 4000 series will be HOT!

I love Gigabyte motherboards and I have a Gigabyte monitor (M27Q). Both are top notch products. When they're products work, they're great. Gigabyte however is known for having a terrible rep when dealing with legit faulty products. I'd NEVER buy a power supply from them. Their less expensive high end GPUs have been known to have shoddy quality design. I have them same view on Asrock.

Either way, I have no hesitation in recommending that GPU at that price. It's the best deal I have seen for a 12GB 3080 series. That's lower than most 10GB models.

EDIT: Shit. The price went back to $979.

I'm already doom and gloom with the idea of the next gen cards. I'm building a 2nd pc in SFF and I am going for a 3080 instead of waiting on next gen. They can be safely powered with a 750w PSU, which I have already. I'm not sure what's going to happen with the next gen. Maybe 4070 will equal a 3080 in relative specs, but will it be powered with the 750w? Can't know yet. Of course the amount of heat is going to be greater and SFF is going to struggle with these next cards.

Dude... If you get the 4090 and plus you have that hot ass Intel 11th gen chip 😬

The power requirements for the higher end Nvidia chips are absolutely unacceptable to me, but good luck lol

In all seriousness it's not even about cost for me, just noise and heat.

There would be a limit to cost as well, like I wouldn't want to pay to operate an 1500watt gpu, but 450 would be fine if it weren't a furnace.

Just bought a 3070 for 400. Did think about waiting for 4000 series but what's the point.
400! Good deal.
You could flip it, make 100-200 profit and wait for 4000.

I tested the water the other day and had someone offering 550 for my 3060 ti. If i was sure to get a 4080 msrp at launch I would sell my card now before the prices inevitably drop after the official announcement.

It's used. but I might try and get a 4000 at msp then sell. My current card is a 2060 so should get at least 250 for that.

Telling someone they should sell now and then buy a 4000 series at launch is the epitome of terrible advice. Many people made this mistake for the 3000 series and you all know what happened. People ended up stuck with their iGPU or no GPU. Slicker than your average Slicker than your average please do NOT take that advice and sell now. Pure crazy talk. Your 3060 will still have value when the 4000 series launches. Don't ever sell a current GPU without getting the new one first.

Just chiming in to co-sign that this is good advice. Never sell the old gpu before you get the new one.

If I have Nvidia latest drivers I can just change gfx card can't I? I don't need to mess about removing and doing a clean install?
Bad idea. Clean install is ALWAYS recommended when changing the GPU. The drivers will still think you have the old GPU and likely will lead to performance/stability issues. It's not a should, its more or less a MUST.

Fun fact: you could have already done this in the amount of time it took you to post the above and get my response. It takes less than 10 minutes.

You're right, getting one during the first 6 months at MSRP is gonna be tough.
Him getting it for 400 and looking at the price where I'm at made me go "EZ $$$!!!". But yeah, better keep it for now.

There's far too many unknowns right now to recommend anyone sell their GPU, unless they're planning to upgrade right now.

Noob question but hypothetically if you had a 12900KS and a 4080 paired together, would all that heat cause any hardware or performance degradation? Like could you actually cause damage or performance issues from shear temperatures even with liquid cooling?

Probably a dumb question since Im sure they thought of that... maybe if youre rocking adequate cooling youre good to go.

Just curious since I keep hearing about how wildly hot both of these are.

Do you have a ks? That thing doesn't even make sense to use as anything but an professional overclocker cpu.

Could be ok if you have monstrous cooling, but...

I do not, I've always had mid range or budget PCs. But Im finally in a spot where I've got a nice chunk of disposable income and I want to go balls to the walls with my next PC.

Probably going to build a new one as soon as the 4080/4090s drop and I just heard the 12900KS was the king daddy right now.

You guys think its overkill though? Im not going to overclock or anything I dont know enough about how to do it, I'd probably make it explode.

Edit - or actually should I just wait on Raptor Lake?

Ryzen 5800x3d is the best gaming chip, though it depends on if you're already on am4 or not. It's also really scarce.

New build from scratch, maybe wait for Intel 13th gen/am5 at this point?

On a random note: On Ebay I just saw a new 3060 XC go for $400, and a new 3060 Ti FTW3 go for $480. 4-5 months ago these cards were going for $740 and $850, respectively. Pretty crazy drop.

And prices are bound to drop even further.
In part because of the new gen GPUs, and in part because of miners selling their old cards.

Don't buy the KS regardless. It's not worth the additional power requirements for minimal benefit in FPS. Buy the 12900K if you must.

If you're just playing games then that CPU is a massive waste. But go for it if you want to go balls to the wall.

The KS is a total waste of money. Even if you are going balls to the wall. The only person that it caters to is the hardcore OCer that and people who enjoy the heat of florida in their room without having to go outside or move to florida.

Well sounds like KS is not the way to go :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Absolutely a waste of your money. Especially if you aren't seriously overclocking and going for benchmark wins. As the entire court has stated, the 12900K will do for you, lol. Use the extra saving and you might can finesse a 3080 Ti or something. Or even better, save some monies.

Yeah but he said he wants to go balls to the wall. That means top chip, top GPU, and custom loop. If he wanted to save money he could just get a 12600k and 3080 or 3080ti, but that's not balls to the wall.

I wouldn't buy the standard 12900k right now either. Say you couldn't wait and wanted to build now... The 12400 would be more than good enough because you can just upgrade to the 13900k later as they share a socket. 12700k would get you the vast majority of 12900k perf but much cheaper.

Fire sale 13900k when it gets older. 9900k for example got far cheaper over time, less than $300 I think. Started at over 500.

Getting 12900k and then getting 13900k soon after makes little financial sense.
Either that or you just stick with 12900k, but then you wouldn't have the best chip for that socket. It bothers me not having the best cpu for a socket. xD

Best to just wait a few months.

You can be balls the wall and still not spend stupid money especially since I'm sure he isn't going to be overclocking the CPU to its full potential. (Assuming) The 12900K isn't a top chip? 3080 Ti or 3090 isn't a top GPU? Just because we're telling him not to blow two months rent on a KS chip and 3090 Ti doesn't mean he still isn't getting top of the line, lol.

I mean, those are literally the highest end parts hence balls to the wall. If he wanted to save money, that isn't balls to the wall. Hunting best perf/price isn't either. In such a scenario a 12900k would be an utter waste for gaming anyway. You buy it because you want to buy an expensive CPU. You wouldn't buy a 3090 for gaming either.

Balls to the wall is balls to the wall.

You went balls to the wall (up until a few months ago) on a gpu. All the reviews said it was dumb due to the perf/cost. Even more so now that the 3080ti exists.

You made my point. Balls to the wall means buying the best, regardless of whether it is a good value or even makes sense.

Of course, I guess you could argue balls to the wall is 2 3090s bridged.

Getting ahold of a 3090 at original launch price when the 3000 series launched and having enjoyed it for the last many months through to the coming 4000 series turned out to be a exceptional idea in retrospect. Based on how things have gone.

I guess... fair enough.

I just hope if the guy doesn't need a PC now, he'll wait until the new stuff arrives in Q3/4. Get those top of the line 40 series/RDNA3, Ryzen 7000/13th Gen Intel products. Would be crazy to me to spend top of the line money on products that'll be superseded in a few months. (If the build isn't needed right now, today)

Reading reviews is one thing, but getting a 3090 at MSRP when 3080's were going for like $1500(+) at the time made a lot of sense imho

Which is why if he needed something today an Intel board plus 12400 would get you going, and be 13th gen compatible. Not sure what it is now but that cpu was like 160 last I suggested it here. Assuming he came from something like an 7700k or worse that would still be a huge upgrade.

"Balls to the wall" is one thing but doing so 3 months before a new launch? Should have done so before lol.

Can anyone give me some advise installing a 3070 it's a zotac one.

It has 16 pins for power now due to lack of slack on my 2x6+2 cables I can only fit in 14 not the full 16. The 2 part won't fit in.

Now reading online I keep seeing conflicting information that the card only needs 8 pin anyway or would 14 work?

It came with 2 Daisey chains but I don't have any more 2x6+2 cables from my power unit. I could put the ones I have into the Daisey chains but then only 8 out of the 16 on the 3070 would be filled.

Using 1 8 pin (Or 2x6) SHOULD allow it to work, but I'm sure you're gonna lose performance. Instead of chancing it, in my opinion, why don't you contact your PSU manufacturer and get another PCIe 8 pin? I think an RMA of the bad cable is worth it than nerfing your card or worst.

But I have 3700x on gigabyte aorus x570, so I would need to get B550 motherboard probably and some nice case.
Actually, I was looking at nzxt h1 but the included cooler pump is terribly loud it seems.
Any other cool smaller cases? possibly with atx psu and air cooler support, so not super sff

I've seen a lot of people jizzing over the Sama 01. Can fix mATX and ITX.

You could also look into the Lian-Li Q58. I really like that case personally. Oh! Thermaltake Core V1 is an ITX that can fit an atx PSU, too.

Looks a bit tame and that front panel is hell.
Thermaltake is thermaltake... their only cool looking cases are the open bench design.
That Lian-Li looks pretty nice !!! And supports atx psu.... but it's not gripping me I think. Also not air cooling friendly.
Propably best if I searched for smallest atx case :p
