My internet was down for 3-4 days.

Amateurish...

A few years ago when I had ADSL... My Phone and thus Internet was down for 8 weeks. Because that's how long I had to wait (and the entire village) for them to get the fingers out of their asses to repair the broken phone lines that had been accidentally cut when they were removing trees and trash that was to close to the phone lines that could potentially damage the lines...

In the 0.01% chance your Internet will go down more than 7 days just tether to your phone for verification then disconnect.

This is a non-issue.

Another day, another concern. Of course there maybe situations where that 1 week is too short, but i bet this is relevant for <0,1% of the gamers.

But what are those situations?
- You are moving house and your new provider needs weeks?
- Your place doesn't have internet at all?
- Provider problmes for more than one wee?
- Holiday or business trip locations without internet?

But even then you could use your smartphone hotspot to quickly log in.

Where is this fake outrage and concern coming from as if this is the first subscription service to exist.
The fake outrage and laughs are coming from I bet most people not knowing PS DRM policy is seven days and Xbox is 30 days (at least that's what someone said earlier in the thread).

So for all the old DRM concerns from long time ago, it's a farce it turns out Sony's DRM policy is more strict than Microsoft's.

Not exactly the same. With Xbox One, Microsoft wanted you to login every 24 hours, otherwise your console wouldn't have worked. And it happened a decade ago.

This isn’t a big deal at all. If you are a subscriber then you’ll likely log in anyway. It’s good it’s only for extra and above though.

That never released. Someone said long time ago that was immediately patched. The Sony 7 day and MS 30 day DRM policies seem ongoing for a while. Just that most people didn't know the details till recapped in this thread. I never knew MS's policy was 30 days and I've had Game Pass for 3 years.

Games like GT7 dont need to be always online etc.

But an online service like this I can understand, but still. It will be shit if the servers are down or your internet is down and you cant play.
So hopefully they can sort it out

But as Pete42O said in the last page, why cant a gamer with a sub plan play them offline until his sub plan ends?
How do you check when the plan ends? The console clock? ;)

Thing is that this is not for the base PS+ collection games or the monthly games. This is not for your discs or digital purchases, this is for the extra subscription tier which is basically PSNow downloads.

I get why it is happening and why some people would like not to have a frequent check (no check at all ever is naive at best if it is a honestly presented argument). Not the same, but we are not miles off from complaining Xcloud games require broadband internet.

It gets to blatant console warring when in the first page some folks were rushing to compare it to the Xbox LIVE downtime debacle forgetting about the players with Xbox set as home console that were still unable to play their games and had issue with setting up the console and disc based games they just bought.

Lots of defenders that can't imagine a case where people might be offline, but that just shows they only think of their ideal situation and either lack imagination or are just self centred in their assessment. "My console is always online so everyone else's must be too."

The real question is why it's different from the standard time. If that's fine why is this new one shorter, and if the new shorter time is how it all should be then why was the longer time unchanged for so long? Throwing a contradiction out there makes it unsurprising that people aren't happy with it.

Without the outrage, it would have happened. It was Microsofts original intent. The Xbox One DRM situation was a different beast and happened at a time when always online wasn't that common. It's hardly comparable to this little non-issue.

Is this news?

That's how subscription services work. If you want to access games offline, buy a physical disk on a PlayStation. That's the only way.

That's concerning news.
I am usually online all day on all my devices, but whenever I decide to play a game, I make sure to completely shut down any internet connection beforehand. I even remove all the cables from my router and put it back in the closet. It's kind of a hassle.
Are you sure you don't play every 8th day as well? If the internet was down on that 8th day you'd lose access to the ps+ extra tiers.

DRM for shit you don't own.

You have no rights and quite frankly in this scenario the companies would be well within their rights to say you need to maintain a constant connection (which is where we are heading anyway when they force this stuff to be streaming only).

Come talk to me when this applies for games that people have actually purchased outright.

This seems pretty normal for accessing games that require a subscription to the service, Nintendo do the same thing with their NES and SNES games too.

Without putting any real thought into it, I fail to see the issue. Sucks if you don’t have the internet for a few weeks I guess but not having internet in general can be a pain.

ArtHands

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
A majority of the US lives in metropolitan areas so it’s not going to be a “huge” issue especially since it’s been a thing. Where is this fake outrage and concern coming from as if this is the first subscription service to exist.

You mean this is a US-only thing?

I’m going to be bold here and say having access to the internet stopped being the real problem in gaming once games started being released unfinished. Feels like I have a patch waiting to be installed or has been installed everytime I start a game. Couldn’t care less if I also need to connect the console for a quick ping to a server once a week, especially since that could be done through a phone. If you don’t have any access to the internet for whatever reason you should probably not subscribe to an online service. I don’t know, am I going too far here?

they should enjoy their vacation...breath some fresh air...
Obviously. But when they come back and didnt login in during that time. The non-monthly ps + premium content will be locked?
Since they couldn't login to the PS4/5 during that time, or am I missing something?

It’ll be unlocked as soon as they log in again. Worst case scenario if someone bring the console to the summer cabin or whatever. Connect the console to the phone. Done.

What happens if the power is out for 2 weeks because of a hurricane. Then what? Sony better make sure the power never goes off for anyone.

People who say it's a non-issue clearly don't take vacations and being far away from home for a week or two seems like some alien concept to them.

Sony just pulled a 2013 Microsoft and peeople are not only OK with it but even go as far as defending it, but looking at their usernames I'm not even surprised in a slightest bit.

I take vacation but this is a bullshit argument for a few reasons :
1- I don't take my console with me, if I go on vacation it is to do something I don't do at home.
2- If I am somewhere with access to electricity there's usually access to either wifi or mobile data.
3- most of the times if there electricity it is for the strict minimum so not TV

As for the claim it is similar to the Xbox one look at the previous xbox live problem, people (even with their console set as home) couldn't play the games they bought(not rented through a paid service) be it physical or digital.

This is a nothing problem that won't affect the vast majority, because who here doesn't have at least access to internet (even a few MB mobile datas would work) at least once a week and plan on getting a subscriptions service renting games?

Ahhh right! Thanks! :)
Yeah you are not kicked out if you don't connect every 7 days don't worry.
But That get's me thinking, wouldn't it theorically be possible to just change the console date while it is not connected?
I assume that if it is unplugged it can't know what time it is.And assuming there's like a cmos battery in it how long would it take to empty it?

PS Now had online check-ins the moment it started allowing for downloadable games in September of 2018. The tiers that this affects are representative of that service. While it sucks that ship left port years ago.

Now please tell me more about how this is exactly the same as Microsoft wanting to require 24-hour check-ins for all games including physical ones back when they announced Xbox One.

I mean of course. What else should they be doing? Letting you go offline for weeks or months and play without having a subscription? Somewhere and when has to be a line and a week will probably suits most people.

And let's be real, how often do have NOT access to the internet? And if it's so often that it bothers you you should seek either a different ISP or refrain from subscribing to an online service that requires internet once a week. Even if you have shit Internet it should suffice to log in and check. We don't talk about game streaming speeds and stability.

And I'm not even a fan boy because there's lot of reason to shit on Sony and I have done so in the past. But this ain't it.

It’s 2022 and it’s just a quick ping to the server. I literally don’t know a single person who would go away on a vacation for a week with no access to the internet through the phone or other ways. I know people who can’t be without their phone for a day.

Taking vacations and being far from home does not preclude you from accessing the internet. I never realized that gaf was actually full of so many rugged outdoorsmen who go totally off the grid all the time.

Yep totally of the grid but with electricity and a TV to play games but somehow no mobile data or wifi access, some very specific locations just to take your console.

1. Who the hell takes a home console to a vacation?
2. If you're that kind of person in there kind of situation that will happen to less than 0,01% of the userbase: Tether your phone to your PlayStation and do a license check. There, problem solved.

But now please explain to me how checking for the license of games from an online service every week is the same as having to check even physical games every 24 hours.

What's interesting about this is how desperate some people are for this to be true.

It clearly still hurts, almost a decade later.

It's more or less the same really - people are forced to check-in or else they'll lose access to the games they paid for. Because that's what the higher tier PS+ is for, and if you don't need the check-in for the base tier, why is it mandatory for the higher ones? Doesn't make any sense other than Sony wanting people to re-purchase the games they might accidentally lose access to.

Gaf often complains how the industry has gone shit, about greedy publishers and what's not, but it's happening only because whenever something like this happens people are eager to justify or even defend it. And as always it only gets worse and worse, step by step. First it was paid online, then price raises, now online check-ins, no wonder console gaming is such a shamble, but hey, maybe that's exactly what the console crowd deserves, being fucked in the ass over and over again, because clearly they enjoy it.

Sure you do have access to the internet, but really, will you go like "sorry guys, wait for me a sec because I have to login to PS+/XBL on my phone or else I'll lose the games I've been paying for in the past 2/3/4 years"? The fuck... If you're truly like this then you really have no life and gaming for you is to fill all the free time you have, so like I said, whoever defends it most likely doesn't leave home for more than just a few days tops.

This is so dumb honestly, I go on vacation exactly to forget about the every day live, all the surrounding tech, the society etc., especially if I'm on some tropic, sunny, exotic land, I want to enjoy that time with friends or family, not thinking about having to log in to some stupid console network. Plus, I'm most likely too drunk to even think about it lol.

Bottomline is, I can only imagine how the PC crowd reacted if Steam tried to pull something like that - log in once a week, month or whatever, or all you gaming library is gone. This is what separates Steam from what the consoles offer, where digital future is bad, it's the end of the world for some - it's bad only because you allow it to be bad, because you keep showing the publishers they can offer mediocre experience and services and screw you over.

Im pretty sure you only lose access to the games until you login again. No way they just erase your PS+ library.

Thats a brainless move at least at the first glance. Someone like me who has yearly reocurring sub, but hasn't logged in for over 8 months or so now will be forced to to fire up the console every single week? Might as well cancel the sub, if I have to do extra work after I already paid for a whole year. Why are MS always so much smarter in such little details than sony?
