4k gaming monitor with good hdr for under $500?

Gamer79

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
Looking for a good gaming monitor that has real hdr. I see plenty of monitors advertising hdr but only have a peak brightness of 400 nits or lower. Dogshit lying marketing. My current TV has a peak brightness of 1400 with quantum dots so kind spoiled.

Any good monitors with 4k and true hdr for around $500 anyone can suggest? Looking to hook by ps5 to a desk setup.

I think about the closest you will get price wise is the monitors I use in the 27GP950-B

Its not true HDR but for a monitor it does quite well but they are around $800

This TV has served me pretty well up to 144hz, HDR, 4k, Local dimming, zero burn in risk.
Since the OP is used to 1400 nits and as a QN90a owner I can second this pick

I also own a 77" C9 and have tested the 48" C2 and I know its a debate for some but for me OLED just doesn't get bright enough especially since my room has a lot of natural light streaming in

You aren't getting good HDR in a monitor at that price, unfortunately. Maybe you could find a TV with 'okay' HDR though. Some backlighting zones, wide gamut... not really the full experience. But you already have a good TV, so.

If you're looking at monitors definitely don't trust stated specs or DisplayHDR 400 certification, though you probably know that already ne? Look up reviews from say, Hardware Unboxed, PCMonitors.info, Rtings... but you won't find a monitor with reasonable HDR at that price.

You can get the Odyssey G9, but it's close to 1000$.
Also you have to join the curve club and risk embarrassment if you have any girls around (doubtful) who see that you're the sort of (fake, pathetic) gamer who buys a curved monitor.

(Just kidding but I wish Samsung would stop making good monitors and ruining them with a curve, ugh)

True HDR? lol no. but if you have to get one that cheap and care about HDR Get a BenQ monitor

BenQ's HDRi (fake HDR) feature is better than HDR 400 (which isn't saying much)

Benq pd2700 u

Bought 2 for less than 500 us each. Awesome color corrected monitor.

They also have dual view so u can use half screen with another color profile.

Neither are close to real HDR though

That's a good monitor for sure but it's not really HDR. It can't do much for peak brightness brightness and only has 8 dimming zones and average IPS native contrast. Odyssey G7 (the VA model) is probably better for HDR but it's still only 8 zones and is only 1440p so... I don't think OP is going to find a good HDR monitor for that price lol hopefully things get better in the coming years.

And I'm looking for a good three bedroom house for under 200k 🙄...
Find a robber, drug abuser or heavily indebted person who wants to get rid of theirs for half MSRP. I kid but seriously, craigslist or ebay.

Just get the smallest 4K "good HDR" TV you can and be done with it.
Else expect to pay near double your budget.
Theres no such thing as a $500 good HDR monitor.

Tell me if you found something. Been looking for this for three years now and I don't even find something for under 1000 EUR, let alone 500. Not gonna happen any time soon.

Even if you found something with local dimming, you'd need like 1000 zones for it to reach even the doors of the same ballpark OLED is in. As of now I would let go the thought of a proper (affordable) HDR monitor. Better go for a good monitor without HDR.

Then again, "good" is very subjective and I, personally, find the monitor market very shit and lacking.
Manufacturers rather push Hz to the sky instead of making good tech affordable. I remember owning a cheap 150 EUR TN 60Hz for a decade (since 2010) and wanted to upgrade in 2019 (so NINE fucking years of tech advancement). Everything that was slightly better (1440p, 144Hz) but cost as much as 400 EUR and beyond. What the hell. VA has bad viewing angles, so bad you already see the colour and brightness shift at the corners on a large monitor (I tried three monitors and they all ruined the atmosphere in RE2 Remake). And they're usually slow as fuck, in fact, so slow you see it even in slow games when you pan the camera that everything get smudgy. So even for a VA panel with less downsides, but still downsides, you have to pay a premium price. IPS has glow and/or bad contrast levels. +100Hz for a good 1440p IPS panel? Whoopsydoo 400 EUR less on your bank account. So TN it is then with ultra fast response time, clear image in smaller and bigger motion, but also bad viewing angles and low contrasts and STILL they charge you +300 EUR for 144Hz and 1440p for this kind of panel.
So if you really want 1440p or even 4k at +100Hz, with VRR, good viewing angles, good response time, good contrast and colours, expect to pay something around 1000 EUR. And we're not even talking about proper HDR/OLED here. Margins aren't that good for manufacturers compared to the TV market so they keep making cheap overpriced stuff or make real good models but expect a premium price for it.

Some manufacturers like Dell, Samsung announced good OLED/HDR models lately but they're all expected around 1300-2000 EUR. Get outta here.

The best price I saw on a good 4K HDR monitor was $600 for the Gigabyte M28u/M32u. It dropped as low as $600 at one point, but all 4K HDR monitors have some slight drawbacks to be aware of.

TBH, the best value proposition is the C-series LG OLED TVs. Superb for 60fps gaming, I haven't investigated how they are at 120hz but I've heard good things.

Just don't worry about HDR right now with monitors unless you are spending thousands. People don't realise that most LCDs that are marketed as HDR displays are actually gonna look mostly to 100% worse in HDR than SDR, eg any LG LCD, any Sony LCD below the 9-series, and Samsungs LCDs ("QLEDs", they are LCDs though, most mid-range and above LCD TVs are "QLEDs", ie contain a QDEF layer in the LCD stack) below the Q80A (or in future years whichever QLED is the first FALD one) because LG use only IPS panels, and anything that isn't VA and/or FALD will have really obvious blooming/black levels compared to SDR (unless your backlight is at max in SDR anyway, which is shouldn't be).

Only VA FALD (SUPER high zone count IPS FALD is acceptable but the contrast ratio is still trash) and OLED produces even good HDR, let alone great HDR or awesome. Great is relegated to around 10 models across the brands in any given year and awesome HDR is only on OLEDs and very specific VA FALD LCDs, most of which aren't old models and not available new, so basically you need an OLED.

I say save up and buy a QD-OLED monitor or wait for them to be more affordable, the LCD monitors with great HDR are stupid money, don't buy them, you would just buy an 42"/48" OLED in that case. I'd be waiting, I don;don't think its a good idea to buy first gen products, like the current QD-OLED monitor(s).

Shame you aren’t in the UK as Costco just had a 48 inch LG OLED TV for £499.

Yeah you can get the 48A1 for stupid low money right now, but people will probably say thats not a good gaming display as its limited to 60hz. Unless you mean a 48C1 for £499? That would be amazing but afaik its £800 even in Costco, its £869 at most regular retailers as of Monday, but its a forward order in many places.

TL;DR - Just wait for better prices on QD-OLED monitors or buy an LG 48C1. It can't be done for 5 hundo though.
