[PC Gamer] Biggest disappointments of not-E3: Starfield is just ugly No Man's Sky

After Cyberpunk 2077 I'm always pessimistic by default with any game on any platform. Starfield looks pretty good but not breath taking next gen good, certainly not enough to sway me into purchasing an XBSX. I am slightly tempted to buy No Man's Sky now though. Starfield looks more realistic to me and No Man's Sky looks more cartoon like imo.

Todd's a shorty, no disrespect to all the shorties out there lol

I'm calling it, Sean Murray is at least 5'11! I can tell, his torso looks much longer than Todds. I've looked at a lot men's torsos... I know.
I always though Sean was at least 6'2-6'3 with how lanky and long his arms look.

And that's totally fine, my comment wasn't meant as a 'gatcha'.

Entirely the correct attitude to have. If you base your current opinions on past experience, a healthy pessimism about these kinds of game announcements is the right way to proceed.

Right now, Starfield looks like a relatively standard but ambitious Bethesda western RPG, with all the good and bad that entails. If it turns out to be a masterpiece, then I’ll very much enjoy playing it, and will applaud the devs… but I’m not putting a lot of stock in what Todd Howard has to say right now, because it’s TODD HOWARD 😂

i wonder how different the reception would be if it wasn't xbox exclusive :messenger_tears_of_joy: plenty of people enjoyed Skyrim/Fallout 4 but now fuck Bethesda apparently lol

i bet when this launches Bethesda will be hounded for bugs/performance issues. usually they get a pass but Starfield will be compared to Cyberpunk. mark my words.
Ahh so gonna be a good game then.

I’m kinda disappointed in how Starfield looks but I wouldn’t say No Man’s Sky is some triumph of visual design. At times it feels like getting fucked in the face by a rainbow.

Destiny strikes a really good balance of saturated colors to lighten up certain areas while still having areas that feel somewhat gritty and realistic.

The reception really wasn’t good, huh? There are too many articles trying to turn the tide around this game. Wow.
All the rpg channels and forums i follow seem to love it. I think most people think that hyper realistic cinematic games are the standard for ALL genre and not just that very specific genre which isn't nearly as ambitious as their rpg counterparts.

Yep. it's the usual.
"Why can't all studios have dialogue close up that look like The Last of Us 2?"

Well, for a start because not all games are 15 hours long at most and with twelve characters saying twenty lines of dialogue each on a good day.
If Baldur's Gate 3 (just to name one) had dialogues/cutscenes that looked like a ND game it would take 15 years and a couple of billions to complete it.

P.S. Hezekiah Hezekiah for the record you can spare me the spam of your retarded reactions.
I'm not going to forget that you are the same user one that sounds like the personification of a brain tumor every time you attempt to have a discussion with someone.

Who was expecting a "hyper realistic cinematic game"?. Nothing about "Skyrim in space" points to that nor does Bethesda's prior work.

Source that people were expecting that? 🤨

I've been a Bethesda fan in the past, but this showing left me unmoved. Grey palette, very techy, huge focus on building and crafting (my least favorite activities). Felt like Fallout in space. I had visions of searching through 1000 planets for space junk, just like I looked through 1000 buildings in Fallout for post-apocalyptic junk. The action felt very "been there, done that."

There wasn't anything beautiful or even visually appealing about what they showed. Perhaps there will be visually beautiful worlds out there somewhere. But mostly what I saw was sterile, arid landscapes. A few occasional scrublands. It gave me no motivation to explore the land. That is an unfortunate reaction to a game that should provoke wonder and curiosity. I imagined sinking 100 or 200 hours into this world, and I just felt no desire to do that.

My reaction surprised me. I expected to like the game. I've been looking forward to it for a while. I'll watch future reveals, but as of this point, my interest in the game has really dropped off.

I'm not sure whether I would call starlink or star cast or is it Starcraft or whatever the name of this game is far from an ugly game. Comparing it to no Man's sky does no man's sky a disservice as that game has come a long way from the piece of trash that it was when it launched.

That’s not a hot take, it’s true.

Starfield I’m sure will be good, but damn if it doesn’t come off looking like No Man’s Sky with a drab Fallout 3 color palette, and CoD shooting.
The problem with the article and the comparison in general is the gargantuan differences between NMS and a Bethesda RPG.

Very similar to complaining about a lack of guns in GT7. GTA5 has guns. Vastly different games that focus on different things.

If the gameplay loop in Starfield is similar to NMS, that would be the thing to be disappointed about. People expect Starfield to be a Bethesda RPG.

Oh come on... I don't even cared about the game before the show, I think it could be boring af for me, but the article looks like a bait, seems like the game made good noise because I'm starting to see these clickbaity articles while the rest of youtubes are like "Oh, cool, not bad"... And I'm not fanboying cause I won't play it (makes me feel bored at seeing it like RDR2 does)

You can make an educated guess. Game is not neccisarely bad, it's just not Elden Ring level.
I can't make much of a guess at all based on the trailer shown. I'm assuming that the core gameplay centers around quests in the large city centers. I don't have much of an idea what those look like, how different they are from each other etc. I have no idea about the interworkings of the resource system (are we collecting resources to use or to trade?), etc.
