You'll know Mario series is in trouble when Nintendo devs are discussing differences between "game Mario" and "movie Mario".

These guys are just shitty game makers and IP managers. At least they have a great character design from 1991 that was successful because it was perfectly paired with an amazing rolling physics code and a some decent level design.

Everything since has been riding off of that good work that was THIRTY YEARS AGO.

They keep adapting it so much that it loses meaning. Was there ever really a Sonic canon?
Mario is like this too. There is not really a canon background story.

Iizuka made he "multiple worlds" aspect of Sonic canon because it was going to be in the movies, so this is already a lie.

NSMB still played it too safe to the point it felt souless, the first one revived 2D Mario sure, but it didn't do anything new with it like DK or Rayman did. Mania was a fun game, the only problem were the lack of new stages and Origins is a collection and it seems they're putting some effort with all the new stuff. They also played it way too safe, but I don't think they're anything to hate and if anything, I consider them above NSMB.

Saying NSMB felt "soulless" is something only done in retrospect after Nintendo milked it with too many Capcom-esque sequels (Not that they were particularly bad, just that they kept reusing assets too much). The original DS game actually had interesting powerups (That people whined about because they didn't just outright make you fly and break the platforming) and bosses (Like actually having a 2D Petey Pirahna boss). Plus the simple addition of walljumping completely changed how the vertical level design could work. You're sorely understanding just how good AND refreshing NSMB was - it arguably was moreso than Sonic Mania, for which many of the complaints about it mirror NSMB but it's even LESS different from the 2D Classic Predecessors.

That's because Sonic 3 & Knuckles was already pure perfection. Mania is actually slightly inferior because it focuses a bit too much on speed sections.

All NSMB games were very good by the way, the art style was as generic as it gets though.

There is an actual Sonic canon, it just different depending on the media.
Even as back in the Genesis days we got Sonic 3&Knuckles being a direct sequel to Sonic 2, or the events of the Genesis games being often called back upon in the first Adventure. SEGASonic canon still made sense until Sonic 06 (which at least was retconed,) but it began to truly become a problem with Generations and especially Forces. I think it's a shame because Sonic had some very interesting lore up to that point, and I would've loved it if they tried taking the Kirby approach with the game lore.

I'd argue SEGA WANTS each piece of media to be different, considering they're giving all these other studios and rights-holders creative liberties. That's because Sonic is much more story-driven than Mario, and they wouldn't want to make it a mess where you'd have to watch all the movies and read all the comics to understand anything. It's the same thing with many story-driven franchises (Like say, Marvel). I still would've liked it if they added some "non-canon" elements into the games (Metarex when?) even if it's something like a simple refference (Like Kirby with it's anime)

Sonic and Mario are alike in that they're both stories told a million times. You walk in knowing Sonic has spikey blue hair and is gonna fight a guy named Robotnik who likes machines. Mario is gonna be high on shrooms the whole time and foil Bowser's plot of the week. To hell with the "continuity", the difference is that Nintendo chose to be consistent in what you can expect from the execution and tone of a Mario experience and Sega well, didn't. Incidentally I think this is why Mario is a 10000x stronger brand than Sonic now.

Not really, Sonic was always more "cinematic" than Mario and the villain's plans were always more elaborate than just "kidnap the princess". Stuff like Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Heroes or Unleashed is just an evolution of what SEGA did with Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic 2 or Sonic CD while story in a Mario game never really mattered (outside of Sunshine and Galaxy and even those are very simplistic) because gameplay was always the main focus.
