Valheim has sold over 10 million copies

Developer Iron Gate has doubled in size over the same period.

Valheim was PC Gamer's game of the year 2021, and plenty of players agree: the Vi-king of co-op has now sold over 10 million copies. Developer Iron Gate Studio announced the milestone in a press release, adding that development on the upcoming Mistlands expansion continues apace.

The game remains in Early Access, and has now been out for just over a year. At its early peak there were over half-a-million people playing it on Steam, and it now boasts just under 300,000 'Overwhelmingly Positive' reviews on the storefront. The notice of 10 million sales comes with a brief mention of what's in store for the year ahead, which is more-or-less the things you'd expect: a new biome, new enemies, and new crafting items.

"We never imagined Valheim would become so big, not even in our wildest dreams, and the past year flew by faster than we anticipated." says Richard Svensson, CEO of Iron Gate. "Our team has doubled since launch and knowing Valheim is enjoyed by millions of players around the world honours and humbles us at the same time. Our ambitions for the game have never been stronger and the development of Mistlands is well underway: we can’t wait to bring this new mysterious biome to the game.”

Valheim was released back in February 2021, and was an instant word-of-mouth hit. The building system gave it longevity beyond the co-op adventuring, and quickly had players building everything from giant longships to recreations of Simpsons locations. It's also benefitted from a large and creative modding community that have produced everything from game overhauls to letting you build a dinky raft. And if none of that floats your longboat, how about the king of vegan viking speedrunners.

I put in almost 250h innit. Will play it some more when there's a few more content updates in there.
It may look rough, but many times I had to stop playing and marvel at beautiful vistas on display.

Amazing game, I love it. I wish they'd work on new stuff faster, but I can't fault them for taking a rest and enjoying those millions of dollars.

ehhh... don't get how this game is so loved (well for co-op i can but there can't be that many multiplayer only people to equal the success this game has)

I bought it and returned it.

I wanted to love it, but it seemed lacking in options and stuff.
It also seemed made for multiplayer. That getting resources were a slog.

Maybe i am wrong but that was the impression i got. Like just to make metal took forever.
It sucks as I love games like terraria, and dragon quest builders, or games like 7 days to die.
The difference is with those there is more options and single player is viable.
People say single player is viable in this but being gated by bosses i am thinking it can't be easy with solo play.
Same reason i avoid Ark, and Conan exiles (although i loved the setting, after a bit it too time consuming to do anything).

This was also on launch day. If things have been improved for single player, please let me know and I will get it on a sale, to try again.

This is also heading to PC Gamepass / Xbox 2023 right? I was tempted in getting this during steam sale but got v rising instead because I read about gamepass.

Nice to see that a small developer can have such success. I didn’t like the game at all personally.

Tried for 1 hour and asked for a refund, definitely not my thing and i'm not sure who could like this thing except for the fans of the genre.

Bit boring to play alone great fun to group.
You really explore and terraform a world. It feels like Botw. You know where you are at any time because you slowly explore and build your own roads..

Like i said, i understand why fan of the genre love it but it does nothing to attract other people, or at least it didn't for me.

No exciting (or even good) combat. serviceable at best.

No exciting enemy design

No exciting loot (i saw the advanced armours and they look like the first armour you find in an arpg)

No great graphic to admire beatiful locations (i get that some people like the art design, but we can agree that it's not for everyone or even good looking by modern standards, but it is particular i give you that)

At least botw had the neat physics going on to keep me engaged (for a bit at least)

I know that none of what i listed is the main point of these games, but then i asked myself, why even bother playing then?

Again, personal opinion.

Great game. Have they added the item you get when you kill final boss yet? Lol

Of course you don't. But there's always another linear, brain dead, scripted, cinematic "experience" just waiting for you around the corner.

So we can all be happy and enjoy the things we truly enjoy.

Well I like those, but I also like others.

Curious you call braindead to those kinds of games, but grinding for hours cutting down trees to build a fucking barrack isn't.....go figure.

Fun game, ruined by shit head devs abandoning their promised update roadmap. The devs took the money and ran, didn't even bother hiring someone to finish their job.

It sold over 10 million copies.
Great result but i think that majority of people who bought the game are fan of the genre.

It's not like crafting\building games are a super niche genre anymore like they were 10+ years ago, and the price point is very low.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
I got my eye on it since the release and can't wait for it to hit gamepass

Hard to say, but which are the most successful examples and how many copies have they sold?

10 million sounds like they brought a lot of new people to the genre - myself included.
