also makes it easy to take it to my buddies pplace and have my games there, kinda like a old school memory card

its definitely a more convenient form factor, but yeah its pricier
I think most people understand those benefits when they stated non-proprietary SSDs will drop in price more than a proprietary option. That's always been the case and we still had people arguing otherwise, the point people you are responding to were making.

Sony rips you off with $70 dollar games. Microsoft rips you off with the ssd expansions. Potato potato.
That's not just a Sony thing lol. Prices just went up for games, like they did during the transition from PS2/Xbox → 360/PS3 to $59.99 from $49.99. Who do you credit for [ripping you off with] that?

You have the choice to buy other games that do not cost $70. You do not have the choice to buy a different SSD expansion for Xbox Series. You've buy Seagate's or you buy nothing.

Xbox should really be putting pressure on Seagate to drop prices. Or at least bring in more OEMs to make these drives.

It’s a real friction point, and it’s baffling why they’ve done nothing.

Cost me around $270 to put a 2TB Samsung 980 pro in mine. I shudder to think of how much a comparable 2TB Xbox series expansion card would cost.

Hopefully they go with standard drives for the next revision.

I love how its gone from "the open market SSD's will be more expensive" to "but but Sony's games are more expensive".

Always undefeated. You guys are adorable.
None of that shit means nothing to me. I go to work for £ It's all about £££££££ not silly arguments on the net.

More false equivalences that have nothing to do with the subject at hand. Stop grasping at straws.

And what point is that?
That what one makes of you in one hand another makes of you in another and its all the same to me as comes out my bank just the same. POUND NOTES. £££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££

Don't buy games day one, as with SSDs, which have went down a lot since the PS5s launched. Pretty simple.

If you want to talk about folks getting defensive then start with trying to move the goalposts from console expansion prices to Sony's games. Sounds like a "silly argument on the net" to me.

I know, but millions buy games day one and first few weeks so my point still stands.
You are talking about your bank, do you buy them day one? If you do, you must think it's worth it. I haven't bought a few games day one because I don't think they are worth £69.

I think your keyboard is stuck on the pound key. Spend some of that to replace it.

Wow you are getting silly. Like I'm the only person that as deviated from the subject in a thread. I was just putting my thoughts on a valid point that a poster had said.

Sony has always had open market storage swapping in their home consoles since the start of adding them with the PS3. MS has always had non-removable or propriety in all their consoles, baring the expanded storage in the One era. One step forward, two steps backwards, monetarily for the consumer.
Internal storage for consoles, sure. For so many of their other devices, handhelds, music players, digital cameras...they've done proprietary storage stuff that negatively impacted consumers by trying to force adoption of their formats as standard by using their position in the consumer electronics market and locking out less affordable options. Honestly, at the end of the day none of them are all that pro-consumer.

The only one I know of, was the Vita. And that was probably due to cost and needing to recoup, much like how cheap the S is with low internal storage compared to the X, and external storage upgrades cost almost as much as the console. To recoup costs.

The PSP and Cameras they licensed out their storage devices to all memory companies. I had SanDisk for most of my Sony cameras, players, PSP, etc.. Sure they tried with new formats, but also ushered in great ones like DVD/BR, etc..

But for home consoles, which pertains to this discussion, they've always been open on storage. Hell, even the PS3's first run had multiple card readers.

I don't own toy box consoles but if I had to pick one based on value for money I would definitely go for the xbox because of game pass. PS5 will definitely cost more in the long run even with cheaper ssds and there is no arguing that.

A saw an 1TB ADATA XPG GAMMING SA70 blade. SSD pcle gen 4x4 M.2 2280. Reading 7400 mbps writing 6800 mbps

It says works with PS5...

Does this ADATA si better than the Nextorage mentioned o OP?

Not necessarily. If every game were on Game Pass then maybe, but fact is the vast majority of games are not. So if you are fine limiting yourself to whatever is on Game Pass then of course you'll save money. But who wants to do that?

They are probably comparable. You'd have to find some actual benchmarks to be sure.

It benchmarks around the same on a PS5.

I dunno about the ADATA temperature but Nextorage was measured by nascompares.com to be running at 44c which is nearly half the temperature of the top drives. Something to think about if you have a loud fan.

Yep because it's all about spending the least money possible on a hobby you claim to love right? Who cares about the unique experiences (or lack thereof) that you have.

That's been working out fantastically for people this year, I'm sure.

Yea saw that the ADATA heat dissipation element is just an aluminium strip, seems it does the work but I like more the Nextorage one.

Oh no, choices.

Seems like that nextorage is a safe bet.

Before I pull the trigger, is a drive for ps5 either "fast enough or not", or are there other factors to compare? I just thought about heat after reading the posts above.

Edit: watching nascompares taking a look at it on yt. I've seen a link to the site in a few posts but I didn't know it was just a dude. This is a long ass video and I predict I'll know everything I need to know about it by the end.

I love how this assumes MS aren't the ones trying to price gouge you to make the profit. MS want the high margin product and control otherwise they wouldn't have gone proprietary in the first place.

Who knows? Leaving aside the Huge negatives of price and lack of reusability, It’s not like there are no positives for the solution they chose. Going proprietory had real benefits in reduced space constraints and hot-swappabilty. And these modules aren’t being made by MS. At best, they get a small licensing fee for what isn’t likely to be a high volume product.

At the end of the day, my point still stands. Price reduction is required, and MS is in a position of influence where they can change things up if they want. They should do so.

And why would MS sign for some small licencing fee? They know it isn't high volume and MS want to take home a nice profit via high margins. Just like they do with low volume $180 xbox controllers. Having it being proprietary lets you control who can make it and MS control the price and margin they get.

I understand you want MS to lower it. Point is that they don't do anything about it because MS are trying to make money from it. Who do you think made the overpriced 360 HDDs, that was MS putting a regular drive in a proprietary caddy.

It has nothing to do with it having a seagate logo on expansions now. They are doing the same and putting an nvme in a caddy but slapping Seagates name on these Xbox Series ones. They can lower it and that call is made by MS. It's a low spec 2500Mb/s drive. They can easily eat into their margins if they wanted but they want the high margins for profit, at least for now. MS wouldn't just give seagate the profits from their closed garden and make little profit themselves. MS are making a decent buck from it and they control the price/proprietary license.

The fact that it runs so cool is a big bonus. Nobody likes throttling.

I still randomly feel bad that I went with the 980 Pro for my PS5. And didn’t get a caddy to upgrade the firmware before use…so its read speed is sub 6000 Mbps.

And now there’s cheaper, faster storage these days.

I need to find a cheap caddy. Thanks for reminding me.
