Klonoa 1 & 2 remasters may lead to more remasters and ‘expanding the IP’, its producer says

In an interview in the next issue of game journal Lock-On (which can currently be pre-ordered), producer Ryo Ishida said that while the main aim is to make players aware of Klonoa, he hopes it will lead to further releases in the future.

“With Klonoa, since there’s been large gaps between the release of the games, at this 25th anniversary’s timing, we decided to release this title so people can play the original [games] first,” Ishida explained.

“And if this remastered version is loved by the community, there might be opportunities to further expand the Klonoa IP and do other remasters of other titles as well.

“The first goal and idea behind the [Phantasy Reverie Series] itself is to spread awareness and reignite the Klonoa IP.”

Marketing manager Moa Ikeuchi added: “The main target is veteran gamers who still love Klonoa. As you know, Klonoa is a title and character that is still loved and supported by many people.

“It’s because of these veteran gamers and our existing fans […] that we were able to successfully reinvent and reveal the remastered version on the 25th anniversary.

“Alongside the memories that our existing fans have, we have also made the game more appealing and [suitable for younger gamers] and also people who haven’t [discovered Klonoa] yet.

“That’s why even though our main target is veteran gamers, we hope that a large variety of game fans will enjoy and experience the charm and appeal of the original Klonoa games.”

Hmm yeah that's the purpose of remasters of "forgotten" games: revive the interest for a franchise

a) release sequel in case of success
or
b) because a new title from this IP is coming soon.

I bought this for Switch and I’m having a great time. It’s upbeat and colorful world are a nice change in direction. I think I played bits and pieces of the sequel years ago. I’ve known about this series for years, but I never purchased it.

Tip: turn off the tutorials.

I need to be sold on this series. Every time I see media of it, it just reminds me of Kirby 64 and that game, while fun, was like a brisk walk in the park of being way too easy and not really that engaging.

I too, did my part. After a long week, its nice to relax with a nice colorful game. I hope they do both a Klonoa 3 but also release the other titles in a nice compilation.

Yeah enjoy that ending, it's the reason i'll never play the first one again.

maybe start creating new ips instead of remaster and remaking everything in existence

Plenty of new IPs coming out every year. Klonoa is exactly the type of game that deserves a remaster. Both main games are great and nobody played them which means they are prohibitively expensive to play for most folks. Even if no new games come out of this, at least fans have a way to play them on current hardware with a new coat of paint.

  • It's easy at the beginning and hard at the end, as any game should be. I remember the last stages having some ridicullus chalenges that drain your lifes you've stocked until that point.
  • The story is supper cutsie at the beginning but drops a few bombs and tear jerkers at the end you wouldn't expect.
  • The characters speack gebrish. They dubbed them at some point, but people didn't like it and preffer the gebrish.
  • THe gameplay is top noch! It's one of the best 2.5D concepts I've seen at the time, and even today.
There is a reason people adore these games.

The first game is based on it's Wii remake rather than the PS1 version, most likelly to look closser to the 2nd game. While it should technically be the supperior version, it lost some of it's charm by updating the sprite character models to 3d and replacing the FMVs with in-game graphics. You would be able to easier forgive the simple animations if the characters where sprites, and they didn't do a good enough work on the cutscenes to replace the better animated FMVs. That might be nostalgia talking. At least, unlike the Wii remake, they reverted the hearts to 3 hearts instead of 5 (you where a tank with all that life).

The 2nd game is based PS2 version, upgraded mostly to bring it up to standards with what they've done with the remastered 1rst game. My only gripe is that they removed the Cell-shaded graphics. The simple character models looked IMO better when they tried to look like cartoons.

The pictures are of the original games before the remaster.

Has anyone had success getting refunds for estore purchases on switch? The framerate issue is consistent throughout the game and i can't get past some of the harder platform puzzles as timing is critical. I am not holding out for a patch since this was done by a subcontractor developer.

Is it that bad? I wanted to double dip on the Switch version later on but if the framerate is that bad, I'll skip it.

Finished door to phantomile & done the extra vision this morning, absolutely loved it :) looking forward to playing Lunatea's Veil as I've never played through it, only ever played the demo back when the PS2 came out.

Got the plat earlier today, good times. Would love to see a new entry ala Crash 4, give me a big game that expands upon the established mechanics and characters.

These games on PC have some weird technical issues. Klonoa 1 works at arbitrary refreshes, but 2 doesn't and stutters like crazy above 60Hz, presumably as it tries to fit the actual framerate into the refresh. Also antialiasing works in 2 but not in 1. Nothing gamebreaking so long as you know the workaround for the refresh problem but these issues shouldn't be in a £40(!) release

It's fun though. I have nostalgia for these games and while they're very easy and fairly simple, sometimes that's fine. I do kinda wish there was a harder difficulty but at least they reigned in the HP from the Wii version.

Working my way through the first Klonoa so far. Games are as great as i remember!! When that first little jingle played on the level clear screen when the fireworks started.....total nostalgia!

Overall though, was the soundtrack changed? It seems as i remember it but different slightly......its not bad but i wish there was an option to use the original soundtrack. Unless im going crazy too, some of the sound effects are different too.

It's a Kirby copycat minus eating enemies for power ups. I'd rather play Kirby personally.
The biggest difference with Kirby is that this one is actually good.

  • Unlike Kirby 64, this one knows what and how to do with 2,5D gameplay.
  • Unlike most Kirby games where the story is non existent or a parody of it self, here it's pretty possible to actually shed a tear.
  • Despite Kirby being an all powerful sucking monster, and the enemy AI is "special" you are still always getting hit left and right because of the stiff/slippery controls, where Klonoa knows it's his fault when he takes damage.
  • In Kirby's stages you could put Mario in there and he would still complete most of them without feeling out of place. Klonoa's stages are actually designed to take full advantage of Klonoa's specific abilities and solve puzzles and never lock him out of some reward because he hasn't eaten some lightning monster three stages and four one-way rooms ago.

Yeah...
Kirby is nothing like Klonoa. He wished he was Klonoa....

Just beat the second game. After playing both, I have to say while I enjoyed the first, the second game is my favorite. Hopefully this collection has decent sales and NamcoBandai makes a third main game.
