A Playstation 5 ssd sale is going on at Amazon US!

The memory stick pro duo and Vita memory cards were really neither of those. Sony finally learned their lesson with the proprietary nonsense. Microsoft messed up with the Seagate deal. They should have just manufactured an enclosure and let you drop an m.2 2230 with a minimum spec into it. With no alternative there's no downward price pressure and, honestly, hardly anyone is hot swapping Xbox expansion cards. I got mine when 1tb gen4 SSD was the same price as one of the xbox expansion cards so I didn't feel bad but now the price is a kick in the teeth.
Well if the MS solution does things the Vita solution never did it doesn't sound like MS made the same mistake at all. Expansion of the internal memory isn't something tons of people are doing either.

This is an enthusiasts forum and many times people mistake things hard core gamers on this forum do for what the general public will do. Remember this forum had many predictions that both the Switch and XSS would be complete failures. The fact that the internal storage can be expanded on Xbox with no tools at all and is completely portable and hot swappable are generally what average consumers would want. Ease of use and simplicity.

The price is high but it isn't like you can't simply add an external hard drive for cold storage. That was a feature since day one. Don't forget MS did not believe in generations and has tons of current games that can be played off of any storage not just internal.

Oh….I distinctly remember having discussions with people saying Xbox expansion would drop in price with standard SSD. They were wrong.

The problem with those benefits is that you are paying for them whether you want them or not.
That's fine but I still never said anything about proprietary options being cheaper. I also rarely see people complain that the thing they purchased has too many benefits. You get what you pay for and what remains true is that MS offered an optional, tool free, portable, hot swappable, internal storage solution that has features no other storage solution offers. Cost is really its only negative. Good thing again it's completely optional.

It's clear that non-proprietary was the right call even if it means having to install the drive internally rather than plugging it in. It takes all of 2 minutes to install the SSD into the hard drive.

Microsoft absolutely needs to open things up to other vendors, but even that might not be enough. The market is always going to be tighter on Xbox Series being a proprietary product compared to the PS5 which can be used anywhere you'd like and will sell more units globally.

People are actually happy the open market is having these SSDs drop relatively fast in price.

FINALLY got the WD_BLACK 2TB.

At last, I can re-download all my sons god damn Paw Patrol and Ben 10 games...

Is the heatsink required? which of the deals going now are the best, the nextorage price went up to 150 same as WD Black 1TB also. I wonder if tomorrow prices will be better?

Sony says you must have one. Some people like buying the heatsink separately to be cheap or to use the more effective third party options such as:

GRAUGEAR PS5 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD Heatsink with Mesh Metal Heat Dissipation Dust Filter Cover for Expansion Slot, Copper Heat Pipe and Aluminum Fin for Playstation 5 SSD NVMe PCIe 4.0 Storage[G-PS5HS03] https://a.co/d/16smOqF

$23.95 and you get a much better slot cover.

Nah! That one has no reviews. I would rather get the ElecGear one for $4 more, and it's a much better design and proven.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
It's about Game Pass now.

The SN850 is now a licensed Playstation product.

The SSD is available to buy from the company's online store, with more retailers offering it next month. £179.99 will get you the 1TB option, while 2TB sets you back £289.99:

That's just the official price, right?
It's £85 for 1TB right now on Amazon for Prime members.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08KFS6THF/
Ordered that and the ElecGear for £108.

Hey now, at least now people also get the option of paying closer to proprietary prices should they wish.

A wise man in this thread once said "you get what you pay for". It has the potential to be really satisfying for certain customers.

I bought:

SK hynix Platinum P41 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen4 M.2 2280 Internal SSD l Up to 7,000MB/S l Compact M.2 SSD Form Factor SK hynix SSD - Internal Solid State Drive with 176-Layer NAND Flash https://a.co/d/gGF39qS

GRAUGEAR PS5 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD Heatsink with Mesh Metal Heat Dissipation Dust Filter Cover for Expansion Slot, Copper Heat Pipe and Aluminum Fin for Playstation 5 SSD NVMe PCIe 4.0 Storage[G-PS5HS03] https://a.co/d/hO6ELoY

I paid $207 for the SK HYNIX PLATINUM P41 2TB which is probably the best drive out there for PC. I'm sure it will do fine in a PS5. It hasn't been on the market long. The freak looking heatsink is a pretty new product too and reduced to $19.

Would you say this one is any better ? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08PHSVW7K/ not done any research and its near enough the same price.
I got the SN850 without heatsink for £85 and bought a 3rd party heatsink for the PS5 (ElecGear one).
I think they are all very similar speeds, but the SN850 is now an officially licenced PS5 SSD.

The Samsung 980, Western Digital 880 and Firecuda 530 are the most popular SSD's by far. They really are considered within the same tier although drives like the Kingston Fury Renegade and SK Hynix Platinum P41 are slightly better drives when a proper heat sink is applied. You really can't go wrong with any of them. The last two are much newer releases and gaining in popularity. The SK HYNIX PLATINUM P41 in particular is the new "hotness" in PC gaming circles and was only listed on Amazon in early May I think? It draws less power when idle and takes a bit longer to throttle at high heat plus it puts up crazy benchmarks.

Prime deals seem to be giving some discounts now.

200$ for this one and 120$ for the 1TB drive.

I’m not familiar with the brand though.

It would be a sad thread dedicated to deals on those overpriced drives.

Yes I’m bitter.

Well this is the PS5 SSD thread. If anything Riky Riky is making the Series drives look bad which can lead to a derailing of this thread.

Riky Riky maybe create a thread for the Series drives?

I’m definitely not going to discuss them again here since it’s been done to death.

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
or I have a cheaper option.

Buy yourself a 2-8tb external hdd for under $100 on ebay and move games back and forth to the internal.

If you play mostly a few games at a time like most people do, one can just move games to the external until they play them again. It may take a few mins to move a game over but not terribly long.

SK Hynix bought Intel's SSD division. They have always been a name that people were aware of but last years Platinum P31 shot them into the stratosphere because of its extremely low power draw and crazy benchmarks. SK uses its own proprietary Aries controller and their own NAND. Outside of WD and Samsung most others use the Phison E18 controller like Seagate. You see a lot of Micron NAND (and a small number of others) too meaning you get a lot similar drives with different names. They are now a major player that likes to let everyone else release products before they release their own. That drive is brand spanking new.

Ok so it’s a very good choice. I might pick up the 1TB then.

Sorry but isn’t worth the price. The tools thing is a complete non issue. The rest is not interesting at all, because i do not believe people constantly swapping it in and out. And friends? I mean with gamepass they have the game already.

How many people really play at friends and do they play completely different games that you need to carry that thing with you?
