Want to know what actual money-grabs look like? Just open up PSN.

This has been annoying me for a bit. Lately, there has been an influx of games being sold on PSN that clearly have no purpose other than being a "free" platinum.

There are two "developers" (they don't deserve that name) doing this. Consistently. As in every couple days.

The first is breakthrough gaming, which calls itself a Christian developer. They put out these trash, usually one screen games that have gameplay that looks like it took a computer science freshman all of 12 minutes to make and can be platinumed in 5 minutes. Then, there is some Bible verse.

The other is ThiGames. They put out a new "Jumping [food item]" game ever couple days. Then, they put out the same game again, this time with the word Turbo added at the end, which appears to be the same "game", but with a seperate trophy list.

These games consist of a piece of food sitting on a table. You press X to jump. Hold it to keep jumping. Once you jump 500 times, you unlock all trophies including the platinum.

What makes this stuff more annoying, is that Sony is allowing this garbage flood the front page of their store.

Last year, I think, indie developers complained their games didn't get enough attention on PS, compared to Switch. Well, that was because Nintendo just allows whatever on their store and just posts the games as they release. It doesn't matter if it's "Assassin's Creed" or "Poop Simulator".

Well, Sony caved in and is doing the same thing. And now they're using trophies to let developers sell endless amount of shovelware to trophy whales while taking their 30% cut.

Anyway, rant over. But, Sony fix your shit on this.

Dude this has been going on forever. They're selling cheap platinums to people who use their trophy list as over compensation of something lacking elsewhere.

But you're right, it's annoying loading up PSN every day and every "new" game is this shovelware crap targeting trophy whores.

Not a recent thing at all, My Name is Mayo is 5 years old.

There's bottom-of-the-barrel dollar games on PC and Switch too, not a Sony issue. Dunno about the Xbox marketplace personally.
True, but My Name is Mayo didn't have 3 sequels every week. And even that, consisted of more than jumping in place.

Switch has a lot of garbage on the eShop, even worse shit than on PSN, because Nintendo made it so easy for indie devs to convert their games over to the Switch. Hell at GDC they were doing it in their booth for devs the year the Switch launched.

On PSN it's 100% due to cheap Platinum trophies.

Xbox has a lot of garbage as well, but not as much cheap 99 cent shovelware as on PSN simply because there isn't a Platinum trophy on Xbox. As soon as they add something like that, these devs will be dumping their Trophy trash on Xbox as well.

1 handed hentai games are better than any shovelware on PSN or Live.

There are actually another 2 almost as shameless. Eastasiasoft and Ratalaika.
But easy achievements are something that already exists everywhere, like Steam. And Xbox also have them, so i personally i dont mind their existence tbh

They're there on xbox as well, gotta get those 1000 chievos , but not quite as bad. Reason why switch and psn have like 5000+ games (switch might actuallybe the worst with over 6500 "games" don't know current psn total), where as xbox has a paltry 2700

There's even ripoffs of Xbox IP on Xbox Marketplace:

Xbox however does do a good thing where unsigned studios (no publisher, no pre-release approval) is segmented into its Creators Program. So its main store is not overwhelmed with junkware, and even most of that shovelware stuff seems to not come to Xbox (maybe the Creators Program doesn't pay enough? or users see Creators Program and know to say no?) It's better in some ways, hilariously uncontrolled in other ways.

OP is not saying they don't exist on other platforms, OP's issue is:

They only flood the front page because PSN just lists games in the order which they were added. So since these people spam a new game every day, that's all you really see under the latest releases.

EShop is full of worse offenders, so many "developers" putting out copies of other apps, and shit that wouldn't even make it to the front page of NewGrounds back in the day.

Lots of padding out numbers by giving away games to fake raise their status on the store page.

It's fucking awful.

I think iOS store still has them all beat.

You know what is more real cash grab? At the supermarket there are section with useless junk that does not fill you or have any quality nutrition. And the owner of the supermarket allows this bullshit without thinking about this shit companies ( they don't deserve the name) that take our money......
Is someone forcing you or anyone else to buy this games, if no why you care?
There are times that anyone can buy a disgusting food and even pay premium for it, he will get disappointed but in the end he will gets over it. In the gaming cycles everything must be outrageous.

The supermarket exists to make money, if you want to go to a place that doesn't offer nutritonally poor foods then you'll need to go to a specialty store. Your mistake is thinking a heartless brainless corporation running a grocery store gives a fuck about anybody's health, they're a business the bottom line is MONEY.

I've been to those specialty stores that pretend to care, and they're even worse they rip you off with the same foods as the grocery stores but at a higher price because of the illusion of health.

Its all part of the plan to make Life of Black Tiger look good.

Karma is a bitch.

The store on PS4 was much worse. Through PS5, at least the promo section is much cleaner. The trash is usually at the bottom of the page, so i rarelly even look at them since whats worth buying is usually at the top/middle of the page.

Idiot childish? Sweet fuck you're one to talk.

You're on a gaming forum bitching about nuturtion in a grocery store on a gaming forum where most users think that tendies dew and Doritos are a balanced meal.

There's nothing more moronic or childish than being 100% off topic in a thread. What you're talking about isn't even remotely related.

You're the idiot.

Legit have never seen any of these kind of games when using the PS5 or PS4. The "worst" I've seen are low effort DLC for games I've at least heard of. Particularly with the PS5, I've never had a reason to actually go through the store. Are folks just obsessively looking for new games to play and searching new releases?

There’s always been shovelware trash on the PS Store but I feel like it got considerably worse following the controversy surrounding Sony’s treatment of indie games on the storefront. I’ve noticed this developer in the “New Games” section pretty often making the same game repeatedly with a slightly different skin.

I don’t even see these games in the store anymore, kind of like online ads…there’s so much everywhere that eventually I don’t even know they are there. It’s like when I take the kids to the grocery and they see an ad above the cart return; I literally had no idea that it was even there. If there is a game I’m looking for, I will search for it. I never use the recent releases tab.

It cheapens the trophy/achievement system, but I couldn’t even tell you what my achievement or trophy number is.

Thought those kind of games did not give Platinum T. As much gold or silver

I have played more deep , difficult games like Vanishing of Eran Carter that do not give Platinum

How those games can give You a Platinum ? Does any daveloper decides it or ir comes from.Sony?

It's a shame. Sony used to have much stricter regulation on the digital games. It used to be that if a digital game did not have a physical release, then it couldn't have a platinum in its trophy list, this would completely avoid the plague if Sony stuck to the rule. Jim just fucked up it.

Lol at trophy addiction
Many trophy hunters hate it too, ultra rarity is now the new metric many use now.

I think it's just up to the developer. I don't know why some don't add a platinum.

These developers also exist to make money, hence their desire to create cheap games for people who, for one reason or another, like to collect platinum trophies. Not entirely sure what you're getting at here.

I'd wish digital marketplaces are more regulated to keep out blatant copyright theft and abuse of IP like this, this shit is ridiculous

You know, I think this is something Sony should copy. I don't even pay attention to new games page on psn due to all the filler.

Problem is, there's not a clear line anymore between what should be on a storefront and what shouldn't. Should it only be titles by a publisher? Then you'd miss out on all the one-man or small-team self-published efforts like Binding of Issaac or Bright Memory Infinite (albeit both those eventually signed to a distributor.) Should there be tiers? How do you qualify what tiers different games fit under, by budget or by publisher? What if there's a great game like Downwell, but it's 2D and simple and cheap and made by one guy, does that belong in the "C" bin? Should the stores crack down on blatant clones and idea theft? Maybe, but Nintendo just announced a Kirby game that is sort of Fall Guys with Kirby, plus Sony and Ubisoft and many others have ripped off Smash Bros, so is it okay when "real" publishers do it but not when indies do it? And then, should it only be titles that pass a quality assessment by the console manufacturer? Well, ask around how much it wants Sony or somebody else picking out which games they should or should not be allowed to play...

Copyright theft and clones are bad too, but then there's "great" IP skirting in the fan-made game and MOD communities. AM2R and Smash Bros Project X are phenomenal games; Capcom itself even published the fan-game Street Fighter X Mega Man as an official minigame. Those titles don't exist generally on consoles because it's hard to get even on the Xbox Creator Program or through the barely-there Sony/Nintendo filters, and can't really even get onto the scum-and-villainy iOS/Android stores or Steam, but the world would IMO be a little worse if every platform was closed and there was no place for these games.

So I agree with you, the overall impression is that these platforms are gumming up with garbage, but I get why it's difficult for them to find an easy ruleset solution.

Well, someone should be in charge of curation. They could filter the blatantly obvious shovelware, at least.

For example, if one unknown developer is releasing 3 or 4 games every single week, maybe take a look. And if those all look like nearly the exact same game, maybe look deeper and see if this is content really worth putting on your store at the expense of visibility for games people would actually play.

And don't give me "choices" and "just because you don't like it, doesn't mean others don't" lines. The games I'm talking about here are not even intended to be fun. They are selling platinum trophies directly and, for some reason, Sony is allowing them.

Well, someone should be in charge of curation.

But then you run into a situation like SCEA in 2001-2004. Bernie Stolar and his "Five Star" approval process was long gone, but you still had his acolytes working there and wanted to keep the PS2 "competitive", which mean that 2D games like Arc the Lad or Street Fighter Alpha had to be released in a compilation.

I would think these massive platforms can afford some more curation of the products they let on to their front pages. Small devs get shafted either way; either they drown in the flooded of trash or they risk not being discovered curators and don't make it on to the storefront.

A partial solution may be partial curation, kind of like "Collections" on the PSN store, but more in-depth. With all the streamers, content creators, indie game festivals, word-of-mouth, steam curators, I can't imagine it would take that big a team to find a lot of gems in the unstoppable flood of games constantly being made.

It would be interesting to know how much these actually sell. I mean it just can't be that high to justify constantly releasing that rubbish, can it?

I bet it's a lot higher than you'd expect.

A decent percentage of PlayStation gamers care, to some degree, about trophies. A smaller, but not insignificant, percentage of those people will take ANY platinum they can get - the easier, the better. These games are cheap - $1 to $3, and promise a platinum trophy within a couple minutes.

Now compare that to the work involved. The Jumping games are all the exact same game, except the item on the table changes. Each game can probably be made by a single person in a couple hours. There's basically zero cost of production.

What is there to fix?

The devs are getting paid for shitty games. Trophy whales are getting what they want. Does this really meaningfully impact anyone negatively?

Pretty much every digital game store is chock full of trash games.

Is your issue that Sony is spotlighting these titles on the front page? And if so, what's the problem with that?

This stuff is pure trash, yes. But it clearly finds its audience.
