Doom Eternal is the best single player shooter ever made

Surprisingly, I actually kinda like it. I would still prefer a top-down DOOM for reasons already talked about but so far this is far better than I thought it would be.

I like the movement. And general flow of the game and jumping and climbing. The RS stick punch is so satisfying. And the sticky grenade is really nice. Dodge is snappy. Feels great.

But the chainsaw attack already bores me after just 2 levels, it’s so overused to get ammo. And I’m bored at the punch finisher animations for health too.

I kinda like that you need to be offensive though, I’ve used too much stealth lately in other games. The action is frantic but it feels like you’re always in control.

At least at the start, up til the next area after King Novik, it’s too few enemy types. It’s the same 5 or so enemies, which aren’t that interesting tbh. I like the bigger ones though, the one with multiple legs and the one charging at you, puts up more of a fight.

Visuals and animations are superb. Music is awesome.

All in all it’s good enough that I’ll play some more at least.

I'm 46, there have been plenty of games where I simply didn't have the reflexes for them. If you couldn't play Eternal, then Doom 2016 must have been unplayable to you too because they really ain't that much different. I mean it only adds a fucking flame thrower to get armor from enemies and the sword later on (which is just a temporary easy way to kill enemies). Oh and some jumping shit here and there. The only thing that really makes Eternal harder is the increased number of enemies on screen as well as a few harder demons.
I'm 40 this year. Doom 2016 gave me no problems.

The resource management is there to drag some players by the neck to use other weapons.

It's fun to use different weapons and find out there strengths and weakness. If the resource management wasn't there's a bunch of goofball players would just use the super shotgun.

Which is fine the super shotgun is fun to use but some of us want a bit more than that.

It's fairly amusing that players bitched and moaned about the 2 weapon limit in ps3 and 360 era. Now there bitching about a game that demands having a weapon wheel and encourages weapon switching more than any other game.
The problem there is the game shouldn't punish you for only wanting to use the super shotgun. If I want to shoot everything in the face with double aught buckshot, it should be a valid a tactic to beat the game.

Kinda cool, looks like there is some Superhot mechanic going on there, enemies are only moving when you’re doing something.

As said earlier I think The Ascent is the perfect fit for me, I love that game, the action is equally brutal and punchy and you see where all the threats are around you, and there are RPG mechanics too.

Have you played Ruiner?

Great game but definitly not my favourite FPS of all time. The platforming was terrible and killed some of the flow, but the intense action is absolutely brilliant. Fuck the possessing spirit-demons though. Hated those.

Nice! Swap out the humans to monsters and demons and we’re nearly there 👌
I’d love if id tried something like that for a DOOM offspring. Or if Coalition did it with Gears. Or 343i with Halo, they kinda did though with the Spartan games but they were lower budget.

Game was a downgrade compared to doom 2016.

It went from "let's bring fucking carnage on these Demon's and bring their asses back to hell" to

"oh, you missed the double jump. Fuck you do the puzzle again.
And shut up about gunplay. You want to do puzzles"

So which one looks like "bringing carnage to demons" and which one looks like a stroll in Nevada?

Nowhere near as good as y'all remember it.
Saying it as someone who played it when it came out, and replayed it when they've updated it to a remastered version on Steam.

I really don't know which type of Internet points you are trying to get out of this and frankly I (and the thousand of other people with the same opinion probably) dont care.

If you want to force people to have the same opinion on you then there's plenty of reddit subs and a purple forum for you.

i'd rather play Halo, or Doom..or Doom 2016 or Titanfall 2 tbh. maybe even Bulletstorm

id argue its Titanfall only because Apex Legends is really popular, and without TF 2 u dont get that. Hell the most picked character in Apex is currently a character with a direct tie to Titanfall 2

In pure twitch gameplay, maybe yes but I enjoyed the overall package of Halo 3 Campaign more... from the lore, to the god tier music, energy/ballistics/melee dynamic, and couch co-op.

Uh? Game is still amazing.

Only thing I don't like about it are those damn blue blobs that splat all over the place and sound like a wet fart. But everything else? From combat to movement feel to level design... It's a masterclass of a game.

And to think Quake is a disjointed mess with poor management that went through and absolute hell in it's development... The stuff of legends, boy.

2016 is incredibly better. Beat both on nightmare. Eternal is good but blows because of it's lame ass platforming and shitty arenas. The level design is terrible compared to 2016. Also running out of ammo constantly so your forced to use shit you don't like is pretty lame. The bright ass ui/pick ups with the stupid extra lives is for pussies.

Eternal never has jump scares either and no retro Easter egg levels. It's boring AF between the big fights. "Git gud"...game is easy with all the stupid abilities.

I just noticed your avatar is Big Lenny.

Titanfall 2 is overrated as fuck. It isn't a bad game by any standard, but the people who compete it to Half Life are fucking delusional.

Doom Eternal is also overrated. It has worse art direction, a worse narrative, less memorable environments, and worse weapon design than Doom 2016. Visually impressive with some good level layouts, but it can be boring as fuck to play. Excellent game but it isn't anything like the best fps ever.

Well that's game exists its called doom 2016 and I don't want eternal to just repeat that

Nah its completely valid for a game to punish a player for playing a certain way. Honestly this "play the game your way trend" is one of the worst current trends today especially in open world games. It waters down what's unique and there zero tactical or strategic thinking required because everything works.

Night and day but also shows why I think so many people don't like Eternal, because it's "too hard" and requires too much thinking for the average player.
It's sad because Eternal is a phenomenal game and arguably one of the best shooters of all time. It's done what all others have failed and actually requires the player to think and prioritise enemies rather than mindlessly shoot.

I get what they are going for with the helmet as your HUD but boy do I hate that glass break decal when taking damage.
i didnt think about it but youre right, thatd get annoying fast. but there is a lot of good going on in here that id love to see in a modern doom game.

I dont know if it is THE best, but definitely in the Top 10 at least. They managed to make a character action game in first person. Its sick. Lets hope they continue being great under MS.

Sad to hear they kept going down that finishing move path. It was not clever.

Most seemed to think otherwise, but I didn't think 2016 was even in the spirit of doom. It played very well. The graphics and the enemy designs were great. The way... Doomsayer, ugh... wants to skip the story beats is great. Overall though, disappointing. The glory kill thing was ridiculous. Getting dumped into big rooms for regularly scheduled fights was not what I expected.

The bear of bad news
Playing Doom 2016 after Eternal is basically like playing Metroid when they take all your abilities away.

I kept playing some more, had the first boss fight in the Doom Hunters Base level. About to start level 5 now, not sure I’ll play much more though, just want to try the new ballista weapon. But I’m really starting to get into the gameplay loop, even though it’s annoying to watch the glory kill and chainsaw animations I like the strategy those mechanics bring to the game, feels fresh, can’t just run around and aimlessly shoot.

My experience in the genre is clearly limited as said before but yeah this is alright, not bad at all.
MS should let id make Halo, this plays much better than Halo Infinite.

Side note: I assume you unlock the old Doom if you get all the floppies for the old computer in the home base, right? Love the design of the home base btw.
What about the right install when you can add letters, is it a code?

Loved Eternal so much I immediately replayed it on nightmare or whatever. Then I replayed 2016 and while I really liked the horror vibe of the level design a little more? The movement and gameplay felt too simple. It's hard to go back.
