Netflix only lost around 970,000 subscribers during the second quarter

  • Netflix only lost around 970,000 subscribers during the second quarter, a smaller loss than the 2 million it had projected last quarter.
  • The company aims to unveil its lower-cost, ad-supported tier in early 2023.
  • The streaming giant provided guidance for the third quarter, saying it expects to add around 1 million net new subscribers.

The company, which currently has 220.67 million subscribers, said it expects net adds to reach 1 million in the third quarter, reversing some losses seen during the first half of the year. Analysts had predicted Netflix would guide for growth of around 1.8 million.

The company warned of the strengthening U.S. dollar’s impact on its international revenue, which makes up 60% of its top line. The dollar’s surge comes as the Federal Reserve hikes interest rates to fight four-decade-high inflation in the United States.
This is going to be a common pattern in the next few weeks

Stranger Things latest season being pretty good (and keeping the second part’s release held back to July 1, after the quarter) helped a good amount.

Is there a list of shows ranked by views from netflix?

They'll never release that. All we have is Netflix's "Top 10" which is always flooded with Netflix originals. Most "Popular" sections in applications are curated these days. Even devs have admitted that they paid for spots in the Apple Store and Google Play store. There's a reason why they stopped using "Most viewed" or "Most downloaded" verbiage.

Guess they now have the cash for more terrible anime adaptations
"let's do Kill La Kill next....that will work in live action!"

Nah they are terrified of revealing any actual data except for cherry picked announcements when something does particularly well.
You can't even rate stuff on the service anymore

They need to stop charging a premium for 4K if they want me back. It's as ridiculous as when cable companies tried to charge for HD versions of the same channels in the late 2000s.

I can understand it since streaming in 4K takes up much more bandwidth, even with HEVC compression. Although if it's just you watching, it makes no sense having access to multiple streams.

To suffer through, I don't know, 6 episodes of this bad show and then be assaulted with this shit?!

The more I think about the new RE show the more disappointed I get. Someone on reddit mentioned it's like they blow most of their budget in the first 2 episodes and then coast with lots of interior locations that are cheap.

Err xfinity still offers a basic cable package for $30 a month which is just a handful of SD channels and maybe HD local channels.

People often claim that it’s because of woke, but couldn’t it also be that the pandemic subscribers are canceling, now that they are out of lockdown? Also: Competition.

Competition, I imagine people are binge watching while cycling through subscriptions.

I mean nobody releases that not even Nielsen and HBO been tracking internal metrics for a long time and doesn’t even do that.

Also Nielsen data often more or less corroborates with Netflix data and there’s no reason for Netflix to boost shows for money as it’s a dissservice to them to do it and content creators dont monetize on viewership so there’s no great incentive to even pay to be boosted.

Competition, recession/hyper-inflation (food and other important costs are rising is Netflix that important?), price increases (basic law of demand), and high market penetration (so many people already have it), traditional personal factors (personally not interested, personal problems, etc)

People love to hate on Netflix but they have the most variety. If all you’re getting recommended is crap shows or movies, that’s a reflection on your viewing habits and taste as opposed to their quality. Yes they’re annoying for canceling shows and need to let them run longer. (Mind hunter)
Exactly, every month has something worth watching.

Next month I’ll be checking out Locke and Key season 3, The Many Saints of Newark, The Gray Man and on the maybe list Carter and School Tales, and that’s before even knowing everything that’s coming.

Covering Fantasy, Crime, Action, Martial Arts and Horror respectively.

I bought a tv that upscales content to 8K. The differences are now indistinguishable so I can just pay for 1080P and still get their best tier.

What's the next logical phase of this medium anyway? We went from having to wait for weekly shows, to having those kinds of shows watchable all at once, to....? It amazes me how much of this content people actually consume on a daily basis.

I thought it was ok, maybe a 6/10. Not as bad as some people suggest. The Lickers looked fantastic at least. There was just too much filler family shit, and way too much back and forth with the timeline. Fat lad getting his moment was great too.

It says they will unveil an ad-supported cheaper plan but........... I don't really see the point of paying them a penny if they're going to blast me with commercials every 5 seconds. I have Youtube (on my tv thus no adblock possible) for that. Maybe if there's something on there you really want to watch but I thought one of the draws of these paid sub services was to not have to sit through ad breaks.

I've got Amazon Prime but if they started putting in commercials I would drop it like a ton of bricks (especially since I'm not buying that much of Amazon anymore anyway).

im pretty happy with most streaming services, netflix included. theres plenty on there for me to watch and i feel im getting my moneys worth

I'm happy with all but HBO MAX and Paramount Plus. I cancelled Paramount - it has some great content, just not much of it. Going to let that one build up for a year then return to it. Besides, some of their stuff is also "free" on Peacock and Tubi and occasionally on Hulu so I won't be completely missing out.

My problem with HBO MAX is the kind of content they focus on half the time, and how their talky-type shows take frequent and long breaks (Last Week Tonight, Bill Maher, and Real Sports). It reminds me of why I loved HBO so much in high school and college - they place a lot of effort creating content aimed squarely at people age 19 - 24, but not much for wiser or more sophisticated viewers; for every Successions / We Own This City / Barry / Veep caliber show they put out, they put out three or four Europhoria-ish shows or documentaries- which more often than not flame out and are cancelled within a year or two anyway. Their movie selection is also laughably bad most of the time. Like, do you want to see all of the biggest box office flops of the last two decades? HBO MAX is there for you.

They are the only ones charging extra for it.

Disney, Prime, Apple it's included.

In the UK, NOW TV (basically Sky TV streaming. Has all of the HBO stuff as HBO max isn't in the UK) charges an extra £4.99 for their "Boost" service on top of the normal sub price, which allows you to stream in full HD. That's right. They charge an extra fiver for the luxury of HD viewing.

I hope you're joking. The 1080p tier maxes out at 1/3rd the bitrate of the 4K stream. Not even DLSS could close that gap, which no TV scaler even approaches. You bought way too small a TV and sit way too far from it if you can't tell a difference.

Outside if Stranger Things, Netflix hasn’t done much in about a year and a half I’ve found interesting. I’m not surprised they are losing subs.

65” TV, roughly 8 feet away, tested between two TV’s. One 8K, the other 4K without the new AI upscale tech.

I’m not joking, it really works.

Ok that's bullshit too.

I guess there are still a few shitty companies trying to act like it's still 2008.
