Seeing as we are midway through 2022(and right before XC 3 releases), thought it would be fun to ask and gauge the community(Though I already suspect what the consensus will be).

Ill have some options on the poll, but feel free to post ones I forgot!

Which game do you think is the best JRPG of 2022 so far?

Inb4 this thread turns into people arguing if Elden Ring should be considered a JRPG.
Anyway under the more literal definition, definitely Elden Ring as it is my overall favorite game this year (so far, though not likely to change)
Under what people more commonly interpret as JRPG: Triangle Strategy, which had fun and challenging battles and one of the best stories I've seen in a JRPG in a while.

Good grief. Elden Ring is not a JRPG.

If someone in the US says they want American food, do you take them to to an Asian restaurant and say, "it's food and it was made in America, duh, American food!"?

A JRPG is a GENRE. A genre is not defined WHERE a game was made. The term was made to describe a type of game that resembles the style of RPGs that were made popular from various games out of Japan, such as Dragon Quest, etc.

That said, Elden Ring is the best game on the list, or any other list, imo.

Having elden ring just feels unfair... and yes it's an RPG from Japan but still...
Well, by the end of 2022 we should have more competition as XC 3, Pokemon Scarlet and a few more releases.

But I was expecting a few more to vote for Arceus.

  1. Triangle Strategy
  2. Stranger in Paradise
  3. Elden Ring
  4. Pokemon Arceus
Triangle Strategy is the best SRPG ever made in my opinion, and 1st place by a landslide.

I've been playing more Stranger in Paradise the last few days, and it's honestly one of the most underrated games of the year. The combat is phenomenal. Some fights almost surpassed Nioh for me when you're using all the different combos to specifically select elements that certain enemies are weak to, absorbing moves with your parry, class shifting to buff and heal. I always knew it was good, but the more I play of it - it's VERY good.

Elden Ring has an impressively large world, and great art design. Lots of content, lots of cool looking shit. Same combat as I've played for the last 10 years, and very poor balancing. The horse was enjoyable.

Arceus is technically and artistically flawed, but still the best Pokemon game I've ever played. The combat and catching elements are fantastic.

I have Live A Live and Xenoblade 3 pre-ordered, both coming in the next week basically.

I still have an immense backlog to go through, so ganes like Triangle Strategy and Stranger in Paradise were left for later unfortunely, but I have been playing Elden Ring and its been an excellent game so far.

But I have to say: It's just too damn big!Or rather, the combinarion of being big and dense as hell gets a bit on the way of pacing. But other than that, enjoying the hell out of it.

I like your style, share the same thoughts as you...with the exception of stranger in paradise, might have to give that another look.

Elden Ring is basically born from King's Field, which is basically a Western RPG (From Software even said they took inspiration from Ultima and Wizardry). Even though it's made in Japan it really has nothing in common with traditional JRPG's. It's basically and action RPG made in Japan. No one would call it a JRPG.

I voted for Legends Arceus, because it turned out to be better than I expected in every conceivable way, BUT I haven't played Elden Ring yet, so I doubt my vote is going to hold up.

This almost feels like bait to get someone to say Elden Ring is not a JRPG....
But show me a JRPG with encumbrance (limited inventory spaces are not encumbrance).

A good head this one.

but on topic this Gen ahs been slow for good Jrpgs imo. "The game" hasn't really come out yet and no trailer for upcoming games seem to stand out to me yet.

Best of the year imo will probably be Live A Live or Soul Hackers 2.

And nah, Elden Ring is not an JRPG.

They're all so bad... But Elden Ring, even though I don't consider it what I'm looking for when I think of a JRPG.

Elden Ring is the best JRPG of all time. 10/10. It kicks Pokeman's ass and gives reigning champion Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood a run for it's money. Oh, wait. This isn't the GameFAQs review section. My bad.

I think you made this thread a tad early, we have a couple notable JRPGs coming in a week to week and a half that may change things up. But for me Triangle Strategy got my vote, that game is immensely good and I was blown away by how much it hooked me. It's a shame people seemed to just overlook it, it's really good. Been trying to work through a second playthrough in between the other shit I have been playing.

I haven't played Elden Ring but feel the same with a few other posters that I wouldn't count it as a JRPG even though I can imagine it's as good as people say it is.

I am really looking forward to XC3 and Live a Live, so we'll see if triangle Strategy can hold my current top pick.

Elden Ring because it is a quality game and I haven't played Triangle Strategy. I platinum'ed ER but I'm never going to play it again. No time to ride a horse in a game for 10+ hours again.

Pokemon needs to bring back gym battles and elite 4's or whatever. That throw-a-dirt-bag-at-an-angry-Pokemon-boss-fight thing is just 100% forgettable. I finished this game and already forgot that it exists :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Once 2022 is over, I'll make a new thread!

Just because FF16 switched its battle system, doesn’t mean it’s not a JRPG anymore.
Yes, that's the one (1) JRPG I mentioned. :lollipop_tongue:

Elden Ring and BOTW2 aren't JRPGs. The former is an ARPG which happens to be made in Japan, and the later is an adventure game with no RPG mechnaics at all.

Elden Ring will undoubtedly be my GOTY for 2022 but it isn't a JRPG (as pointed out by many others). Having said that, I haven't played the rest so it got my vote by default. I'm familiar with all the other games though and Atelier Sophie 2 is the only one that fits the traditional "JRPG" definition.

Seeing the list in the op i think we really should define what a jrpg really is.
I always though Elden Ring is a soulslike and that i n itself is its own genre?
Rune Factory is equal parts rpg and farming simulator (at least 4 was?)
Atelier Sophie and Triangle Strategie come closest to an jrpg (imo)

Why is Tales of Arise not on that list? ;)

Tales of Arise released on 2021, not 2022.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Games today have a lot more rpg elements to them the elder ring love is brutal that we haven’t seen lots of narratives are stitched together to give elden scrolls glory. Exploring a world always gives everybody attention, the elden ring fanboys fall in neatly with console fanboys and create more noise about the game.

Elden Ring counts as a JRPG in my opinion. If you look at what constitutes a WRPG since forever, it's basically any action RPG with some menus, equipment and stats. If those are WRPGs, then this is a JRPG.

If you think JRPGs only count if its pixel art, uses a menu, or says Final Fantasy on the box, then you're basically dooming JRPG to just be an old and outdated genre. You have to move with the times. Final Fantasy is also going to be action combat in FFXVI. Is that not a JRPG also? Really think about it. It's obviously changed.
