Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in an earnings call with investors has stated the Xbox Series X|S continues to be the fastest-selling Xbox generation as it is tracking ahead of the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox.

He also revealed the Xbox Series X|S has been the market leader in the next-generation market in North America for three straight quarters.

"In Gaming, we’ve sold more consoles life-to-date than any previous generation of Xbox and have been the market leader in North America for 3 quarters in a row among next-gen consoles," said Nadella.
The Xbox Series X|S was the best-selling next-generation console in North America for the quarters ending December 2021, March 2022, and June 2022.
Tracking ahead of the 360 means that we can use it for reference as to where its sales figures are (at a minimum anyway not maximum) so that's beneficial. But tracking ahead of the 360? That really changes the game when compared to the Xbox One. Microsoft really turned thigs around this gen.

Many people were saying even with the last few years improvements with games, services, and hardware with Xbox One S and X, that the damage was done and the Xbox Series would be struggling to over come the Xbox One taint, but it turns out Microsoft had managed to completely undo the damage tot he Xbox One, and had not only got back the base it lost so far, but is tracking ahead of their best selling console!

All this before Starfield and other major current gen only hitter drop. I expect cross-gen to en,d for Xbox at least, next year as the Xbox One was already discontinued long ago and has become irrelevant. I expect Halo Infinite to be the last larger cross-gen title especially for first-party.

As much as people had skepticism for Phil and friends it seems they really did manage to turn things around. It's incredibly astonishing how Xbox is in an entirely different place than it was just 2 years ago.

Xbox and Playstation may BOTH outdue their 360/PS3 sales this gen at the current rate.

I take some issue with characterizing Series X|S as one console for reasons that have already been debated in the past but congratulations, nonetheless. They’ve definitely instituted fresh ideas that have allowed them to be much more successful in comparison to the prior generation.

Edit: Why so many triggered reactions? I think Xbox is doing great atm. Just think the X and the S, while both next gen consoles, are different enough that they segment the market. Different situation than PS5 disc/digital.

While this may true, I believe the real reason is because the PS5 is still impossible to find while you can get series S especially and X everywhere almost.

I also believe sales will shift towards Xbox when COD is on game pass. That will really boost the Xbox. Especially if the deal is closed and they can get COD MW2 in time for game pass

Yep. The Series S should be tracked separately. That would give a more accurate picture of their sales.

Its one console gen. Its not that big of a deal.
That's a lie but if it makes you feel better, keep deluding yourself.

The Series S doesn't even deserve to be called "next gen". It's an iterative half step up from the One X that is already struggling on some games two years into its lifespan. The specs of the Series S put it in a generational status all it's own and has no business being counted alongside the same sales numbers as the actual next gen Series X.

This is pure bullshit. There is literally not a single game that runs on X that is not in S. Its just a lower spec version.

Series X is the most incredible -hardware wise- console I have ever seen in action. The little motherfucker is nothing short of a beast.

edit: PS5 is amazing as well and got similar vibes when use it, just in case. Its just the form factor that hurts my existence.

It was said they the console market is not growing. Has been stagnant aground 250M or something like that, right?.

If Xbox is breaking their own records one can infer that they are eating some of the PlayStation's pie as well. (Just like happened in the 360 era). No one can denied that Xbox is working hard to circumvent its first-party content deficit.

And is safe to assume that there are multple factors in play for Xbox's success too. Aka (Not only game GP).

In theory, this console generation could be the most competitive one ever. We are just getting started.

Its a low end PC from 2020. Series x is a mid range PC from 2020. It's the same platform. 'Generations' no longer exist.

I didn't not see this coming honestly. My vote was on PS5 consistently outselling the X and S thanks to the X being much harder to manufacture and the S not being as popular as MS would hope.

That's good business strategy right there. Being more readily available is important to sales. Also in NA the gap between Xbox and playstation never been especially large even last gen. I think NA is xbox strongest region.

I thought that MS declared unit sales meaningless BS... and we are back to "only US sales count", just like the 360 days!

I wonder why they are relevant now, must be a long covid effect or something.
Earnings call with investors...it wasn't a press release or anything.

PS5 is still hard to find. I would be quiet about sales if I was him because when both consoles are readily available we all know how this is going to play out. Especially if MS doesn’t improve with the first party games.

This gen is going to be one of the best IMO because all 3 companies have an advantage in some way.

Yes but that doesn't really mean much in the long run. And selling more because the other consoles no where to be found doesn't mean the Xbox is more popular either.

However, sale is a sale . And these gamers are now part of the Xbox ecosystem.

The only thing remaining is MS to keep them in that ecosystem. I really hope they get COD in game pass before MW2 is out. They will sell shit ton of consoles and game pass.

"We beat the PS5 for 3 quarters in North America (our strongest market) while the PS5 was heavily supply constrained due to production problems and failed to meet it's targets. Also, the Switch doesn't count because we sold less than it did."

They sure like to console war when it suits them, classic MS: "We don't talk about unit sales. Unless we have some shots to fire and info that suits us. But if we don't say anything please don't assume the worst."

Just my opinion - Availability is the difference here. I've been seeing Xbox consoles on store shelves for a while now. PS5s are still more difficult to come by. Microsoft deserves credit for that.
They deserve credit for producing way less consoles than Sony did? The PS5 is supply constrained but they still produced way more of them not to mention how much easier the Series S must be to produce.

Congratulations Microsoft. That adds up to a heck of a lot of players eagerly awaiting your next exclusive. I bet sales numbers on that game will be astronomical.

As far as the lifecycle goes, the Series S is “next gen” because that’s the marketing moniker put on this generation of consoles whether you agree with it or not.

Sure from a tech perspective that can be argued with possibly some validity, but that’s not what this specific thread is about.

If I had the money, I could have bought a Series S everyday since release, without turning to scalpers. That's not the case for Series X and especially not for PS5.

It's a given the Series X|S are leading in sales. I even bought a Series S for my daughter cause I couldn't get my hands on a PS5 in time.

Perhaps people know that the value us deeply off for PS5 games.

Ratchet would be 5 dollars by now any other gen. Subscribe to access nostalgia. MS will be gouging next gen I'm sure, but for now, PS5 is bereft of deals.

$70 Last of US remake. Rebuy Spidey please. My god. Even my favorite game, GT7...it's questionable.

The only PS5 deal was Astro and the welcome pack was nice.

They took an unconventional strategy and it paid off. I'm sure the disk drive and the digital versions of PS5 all count towards the total number of sales.

If both were actually properly acc bc available it would mean something. Both are just so constrained it just means ms found a way, the series s, to get more units out.

It’s good, but both could be doing better

Is there any graph for Xbox 360 that we can use to get an idea where they are saleswise with Xbox Series? What’s their minimum sales figure after roughly 1.5 years?

No they deserve credit for the fact that no one cares about xbox outside of US, so they could send their whole stock on a single market.
