PS5 Beta is perfectly analogous to Sony today

Sony has really, I think done a great job listening to their audience this generation, but their execution just leaves a lot to be desired. It strikes me as absolutely amateurish for the leader in this industry to act the way they do.

Sony released the PS5 beta and obviously, the features are well in beta, but what do we have?

Game lists!!!!

Finally, this is great, but there always seems to be a caveat with Sony these days.

When you add games to lists there is no option to have them removed from the general library. I understand why you might ultimately want games in multiple lists, so this should be an option, but having to navigate through your entire list just to add additional games to lists (not knowing whether they are currently in a list or not) is complete amateur hour. How did they get this so right on PS4 and so wrong here? Did they fire the folder guy and hire someone new here?

What's worse is you also can't change the order of the lists or sort within the list themselves, they both just go in order of creation/addition. This is something they absolutely need to fix before this goes into the production version, and I'm stunned that it's this way even in a beta. It took me all of 2 minutes to discover these clear issues.

Similarly, we see that Sony listened to those that wanted 1440p and they delivered, but without VRR... And even when they delivered VRR they did so in a way that it only works above 48 fps iirc.

Sony put out PAL games for their freshly launched subscription model, tried to fix the frame issue leading to ghosting, and then finally decided to offer NTSC versions. They listened which is great, but I just don't understand why they can't get things right out of the gate.

Both Gran Turismo 7 and Horizon's launches were botched and eclipsed by Elden Ring. GT7 is still sitting with a user score of 2.0...

I'm one of the few people who are entirely in favor of a Last of Us Remake, but they've even lost me on purchasing this at full price. The marketing from Sony on PS5 has been bewildering. They don't generate hype for any of their games and the games have not had the same polish they had with the previous gen (so far). I feel like Sony has tried to rest on the success of the PS4 a bit too much, whether that involves cross-gen or PS5 ending up more of an iterative upgrade over the PS4 and particularly the PS4 Pro. (I think Microsoft has done an even worse job this generation and their lack of IP to date is baffling).

I'm not one of these guys who thinks that thinks Jim Ryan is a monster or totally inept, but I do find Sony utterly rudderless under his direction. They seem like they're about 18-24 months behind where they should be and finding it very difficult to discuss their games in advance. Last of Us Part 1 and God of War both are coming out in a few months and we've seen little to nothing on them (I don't think we would have seen Last of Us yet if it had not been for leaks). Remasters of Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy instead of remakes of Uncharted 1-3 (but that's just my 2 cents).

Spider-Man 2 is supposed to come out next year and we've still seen nothing on it. Maybe that's just how the industry works today for many games, but when Sony says its sales are down (games, not consoles), I'm not surprised. I didn't buy GT7 or Horizon and won't buy LOU P1 until they drop in price. The only game that might still be day 1 for me is God of War, but maybe even that is a stretch. I lament the death of e3. I think we all know that Spider-Man 2, God of War, and Last of Us P1 would have been showcased at E3 and that pressure to create something for E3 leads to diamonds (even if that content isn't used in final games).

Edited: To fix the time frame of how far behind they seem to be.

You don't need to delay a finished hardware product because of the lack of a non essential system feature if you can add those features via software update later.
Similarly, we see that Sony listened to those that wanted 1440p and they delivered, but without VRR... And even when they delivered VRR they did so in a way that it only works above 48 fps iirc.
The console was clearly not envisioned with 1440p in mind.
Both Gran Turismo 7 and Horizon's launches were botched and eclipsed by Elden Ring. GT7 is still sitting with a user score of 2.0...
Elden Ring is from FromSoftware, had huge marketing and had George R.R Martin attached to it. It was going to eclipse every launch that didn't had a bigger name.
I'm not one of these guys who thinks that thinks Jim Ryan is a monster or totally inept, but I do find Sony utterly rudderless under his direction. They seem like they're about 16=8-24 months behind where they should be and finding it very difficult to discuss their games in advance.
PlayStation became the most sold console with Jim Ryan in charge with record profits after the PS5 launch. They clearly want to capitilize their Naughty Dog IPs on the new public who got their PlayStation console for the first time and sell extra copies of games that already proved print money.
Spider-Man 2 is supposed to come out next year and we've still seen nothing on it. Maybe that's just how the industry works today for many games, but when Sony says its sales are down (games, not consoles), I'm not surprised. They clearly dont want to spoil the audience, like with GoW and Pokémon are nowdays doing, with little to no trailers prior to release.
Sony put out PAL games for their freshly launched subscription model, tried to fix the frame issue leading to ghosting, and then finally decided to offer NTSC versions. They listened which is great, but I just don't understand why they can't get things right out of the gate.
The service was clearly rushed to compete with Game Pass and still came out pretty great.

Do you really want that usual mess of showing games years in advance and then keep using dev time to create vertical slices that end up delaying the game?

I'd rather the way things are now with both Nintendo and Sony only revealing their games closer to release and not worrying that much with impressive but deceiving vertical slices. When a game is revealed and showcased near launch all that is gone, you'll see a realistic representation of the game that was made as part of the natural development.

It's really weird how people prefer to be fooled by the old E3 smoke and mirrors and wait like 5 years after an announcement to actually play the game.

Oh the whole "God of War Ragnarok won't release in 2022" argument.

Why do you need to see Spider-Man? You have the first game and Miles Morales. They don't need to sell people on the game, thats already taken care of. Showing too much would be spoiling the game for no reason.

This is why I don’t beta test, it’s annoying and I have no desire to deal with incomplete features.

I'm not saying they should have delayed the PS5. I'm just bewildered that this beta is in such rough shape on such a simple thing such as game lists/folders. This is like dev 101-type stuff.

Not having 1440p in mind itself is an oversight. Do I care about 1440p? No, but obviously a large segment of gamers do.

Maybe you delay Horizon a few months, clean it up, and release it against no competition this summer?

Jim Ryan became President of SIE, 3 years ago, nothing that he did as President brought the Ps4 to where it ended up.

The lack of "spoilers" didn't help Horizon.

Agreed on the rush to compete with Game Pass, but they literally had months and the ux is a nightmare.

My point isn't that spider-man ISN'T coming out next year, rather that they've done nothing to hype it up just like God of War.

This is a pretty hot take in the history of gaming...

This 10000%.

I think it makes sense for Sony and Nintendo to do this. With established IP, you already know what to expect and they'd rather not put out content that is subject to change only for gamers to keep bitching about downgrade here or false marketing there lol

For MS its a bit different. Them selling less systems then both 2 generations in a row means they needed to buy more teams to compete and needed to show their hand earlier to give the best marketing to get consumers to side with them vs PS, Nintendo etc. So they have to do a bit more and show a lot earlier as they have ground to make up so to speak, even then other projects like Fable are not just getting updates every month or something, so I think it makes sense to actually say very little, show it when its about 6 to 9 months out to avoid the headache of the whole downgrade thing.

That and gamers have short memories. Strike while the irons hot on established IP, slow drip out content for new IP. I think this combo makes sense for all publishers btw.

I don't think having an established IP is enough to necessarily get it to sell as much or more than the previous game.

Sequels to be AAA franchises used to really push the limits or should significant evolution and e3 was often a time to show that off.

The hype for FF16 is significantly higher than FF15 for example. It's not just about announcing super early, but execution all around.

God of War 2018 had huge amounts of hype surrounding it.

they've done nothing to hype it up just like God of War.

smh. You need help.

God Of War just got a trailer 3 weeks ago and a release date.

Why would they hype up Spiderman 2 when God Of War isn't even out yet? They want their focus on what you'll spend your money on THIS FUCKING FALL.

THEN they'll focus on Spiderman 2 for next year when they drip out info to build that hype. So I'd argue the company that has moved the most home consoles in history and has broken ever major record for their IPs...probably knows what their doing compared to...Mibu lol

"God of War 2018 had huge amounts of hype surrounding it."

It was also a bigger mystery based on it being a reboot.

So...I think you are exaggerating a lot of this shit man. No one is buying games based on some of the shit you are saying. "hype" is good, but the game still needs to fucking be good. So Sony's focus is on what it needs to be. Market what is ahead, wait til it releases and then start marketing the next title etc.

This argument is a fallacy. Explain why their games have sold less than they expected this quarter. That's squarely on Horizon and GT7 being less successful than they anticipated.

My very point is Sony hasn't executed as well as they have historically and your argument is, historically they've executed well, so despite not executing in the past couple of years, they'll continue to execute as they have historically.

This argument is a fallacy. Explain why their games have sold less than they expected this quarter.

Sony, MS, Ubisoft, EA etc can't control a fucking pandemic.

All of that will effect buying habits and you've yet to even prove that them selling less of those titles is based on marketing them a different way or something.

My very point is Sony hasn't executed as well as they have historically and your argument

lol annnnnnd they also haven't put out a next gen system during a massive pandemic either thats shifted the entire industry..... So I don't think you've really proven that any method of what Sony is doing is really key to those games selling less 1 quarter here or there or some shit.

Wasting energy on some fucking metric like Metacritic is even worse, half the time we have no clue why some game is being bombed and then you read comments about religion, pollical views or some scandal that literally shows people will bomb a game, based on something that has nothing to do with the quality of the game.

So......I wouldn't waste any of my time with such a shit metric, for or against a game. Its simply not a unbias measurement.

Stop blaming the pandemic on the lack of success (meeting expectations) for Horizon and GT7.

Elden Ring was developed and marketed under the same pandemic.

Metacritic is trash. A bunch of people fooled by misinformation. No one who's played the game thinks it's a 2.0.
I'm not saying it is a 2, that's patently ridiculous.

What I'm saying is they royally pissed off the community and the game's sales seriously took a hit as a result. That's a botched launch in my book.

Yes...under the same pandemic that cause consumers to pick and choose what they would buy or not, in a situation years ago that would have saw all those games move units during the same month.....

So as a consumer myself, as someone effect by that pandemic in regards to how much my business makes now vs pre-pandemic...I have to pick and choose what I buy more now then years prior.

I bought that new Tales game used, I bought the others new. I'm holding off on buying Elden Ring to buy it used when I get a PS5. Thus... I can buy games, but instead of getting like 3 or 4 games new, I need to pick and choose what I buy.

Soooooo I don't think you really get what is being stated and instead you are foaming at the mouth with some either or war mindset. The pandemic having 1 game break records, while others sell less very much shows people have less money, thus will buy later on, buy used, wait for a sale or get some subscription to play the game.

None of that means no one wants to play GT7 or Horizon, the fact that they are still charting shows they have consumers who want to play them, that may not have the funds currently.

Even more reason to delay games to make sure they're actually ready for primetime.

Both games weren't ready and/or needed to be re-evaluated in terms of features.

The game Horizon is today verse when it launched is tremendously different in terms of polish. I think everyone would agree on that. The timing of releases has always been important, and now more than ever.

But these games underperformed because they didn't have the polish that they should have or had controversial elements to them.

Not really, it's still tracking higher than Sport and keeps selling consistently. It's one of those games that get a bump when PS5 stock drops .

As for the community, it didn't piss off anyone interested about racing games. They may have heard about the controversy and then found out it was totally fake.

If you think this is in line with their expectations, you're kidding yourself.

would you rather them not announce anything or have them announce years in advance and proceed to say literally nothing about the game for half a decade like nintendo did with BOTW2/Prime 4, or Microsoft with almost all of their non 343/playground/turn 10 projects?

lol just stop man.

They can't delay all their games to try to avoid...what? All releases next year? Everyone else is still putting out games next year sir, its not like delaying God Of War to avoid Hogwarts, won't have them in a situation where they must now delay past spring to avoid Star Wars Fallen Order 2, ohhh no, they need to delay past summer too, FF16...do you not see how silly this shit starts to sound?

Does anyone expect Hogwarts to be a GOTY contender?

Is GOWR ready to launch?

Was Elden Ring considered a GOTY contender before launching?

Were GT7 and Horizon ready for launch?

What big name titles have been released in the last 3 months?

I bet you won't answer any of these questions...

I thought they delayed Ragnarok to avoid Starfield?

Oh wait……

On a serious note I always thought delaying a game to avoid another game is just dumb in most cases unless it’s a particularly weak title. Like what Sega did with some of their games for example.

When games are 70 dollars, consumers are going to be particular about what games they purchase.

As a result, games need to ensure they launch polished lest they take significant heat among critics and user reviewers, which can cause them to stumble against other games.

It's literally not on the PS4 chart and Need for Speed is...
It's in the PS5 chart and as we've seen since near the launch of PS5/Series X games tend to do better on the newer consoles due to the audience moving on or waiting till they can acquire a new console. This is backed up by the fact it sells more when more PS5 stock drops.

Also this is $60 on PS4 and NFS is always heavily discounted.

I mean, dear god the fucking comment I'm making is not to suggest Hogwarts will be some GOTY title, its to fucking illustrate they can't just delay to avoid all titles cause games will continue to release.

Instead you see it as some fight or some claim or something odd like that to be combative and to argue strawmans You don't even get the point being made, you think its literally in favor of those titles actually winning GOTY when its what you stated, not me. Nothing in my post entertains those titles beating God Of War in any of those areas, simply that titles will continue to release and its simply used to make a point that titles will come out....

Not that Elden Ring isn't a GOTY title or Hogwarts is or isn't.

Shit, in fact you even not fucking knowing that Elden Ring would be such a big contender by saying "Was EldEn rInG a GoTy cOnTender bEfoRez" fucking suggest that they couldn't delay God Of War in this situation...for a game they don't even know would be a GOTY contender, it further proves my point that they can't just avoid all releases as clearly they don't know what titles would have monster releases anyway.

So how would you delay GT or Horizon for the title you don't know will be some "contender before launching?" =)

Both games have a lot of reason for concern.

Starfield looks like absolute trash and GOWR looks like GoW 2018 DLC.

lol nah, this is fucking fanfiction sir.

You just sound triggered to a massive degree. You personal fucking view on something looking like "Trash" is irrelevant. Its "concern" for some shit that you are exaggerating with no evidence that those fans give a shit about what you are talking about .

ie I think all Call Of Duties look like trash, that isn't a fucking legit concern, that is a subjective view you are not trying to force into some real issue.

MasterCornholio MasterCornholio I'm saying, God Of War 2018 is already the largest GOW ever made, the most expensive, the longest ever put out, but fuck me it was suppose to be what? 300 hours long? 14 times bigger then the last title or? What do they know about God Of War 2018 to suggest its sequel is just additional content to a game already the longest in the series history on top of the most expensive and biggest foh. This sounds more along the lines of more crazy talk by Mibu lol

So how would you delay GT or Horizon for the title you don't know will be some contender before launching? =)

People have considered Elden Ring a GOTY candidate well before it came out. The question was rhetorical. That was my point. My point was that they knew Elden Ring was going to be a major hit, yet they released two games that weren't ready for primetime. They should have been delayed to the summer, a summer that was largely vacant from major releases.

I wouldn't avoid Hogwarts based on what we've seen for it nor am I saying EVERY game should be delayed.

There are however times when a game can become a cultural phenomenon and releasing games less than ready at the same time as these rarely works out in your favor.

What makes you think that GoW is DLC or cut content from GoW 2018?
I didn't say it was, I said it LOOKS like DLC, LOOKS LIKE, as in it looks iterative rather than evolutionary or revolutionary.

lol nah, this is fucking fanfiction sir.

They asked if I was talking about Starfield or GOW and I answered. I know you aren't clear on answering questions asked of you, but I was asked and I answered.
