The truth is it's very unlikely that the ps5 will outsell the ps4 unless this gen goes on for longer than 10 years. The ps4 launch was not as good as the ps5 launch and still the ps5 has fallen behind the ps4 launch aligned. It was not until the second year I believe that the ps4 hit its stride. The content the first two years wasn't great and they heavily relied on indies and third party titles until that second year. Then their demand stayed high until pretty much the end of the gen. The same isn't likely to happen with the ps5. Also it's more expensive and so are games. And most, if not all, future ps5 games will come to pc. There's really no way the ps5 outsells the ps4 unless this gen goes on forever.
Try harder, brave warrior!

If I was Sony I would have some contact with my suppliers and make estimates based off what they tell me. I’m guessing this is how they come up with some of those numbers. I mean it is a vital part of their business. Knowing demand and the potential of supply in the future is a part of it. Trying to fix supply is also pretty important to them. Whether or not they achieve it remains to be seen but it doesn’t seem impossible. Otherwise they wouldn’t be inflating their investors expectations.

You say that (and I agree that's what they should do) but they did come up with some bullshit reasoning last year not to reduce their forecast last year. I think they will get some what close to 18m.

Report me if I continue to console war
In the first slide they said that according to the top gaming market analysis firm in the world there's twice the purchase interest in NA for PS5 han it was for PS4 in the same time after launch. PS4 wasn't supply constrained, so I assume that if PS5 wouldn't be supply constrained their sales in NA would be approx. twice of the ones PS4 had in that period.

Remove from there the PS5 units sold in NA for that period and you'll have the number of people who intends to buy a PS5 in NA but still couldn't do it.

Could you share a single market data that suggests that PS5 will perform substantially worse than PS4 and other one that suggests that Xbox will 'steal' them console market share?
And ive already acknowledge that sony would be able have an idea of what the general demand is, however Ive also said they won't know specific numbers, they get data from retailers, customers and social media, however it is limited and speculative. Sony aren't aware of the specific instances of people who want a PS5 but cant get one, How would they even be able to know that information? Its not even legal to spy on people, which would be required to get that information.

The market data from the past two generations and Xbox series growth (also other platforms too) suggests a reduction in playstations sales.

Also Even if sony did Know the specific figures for current demand it does not really disprove my main point, Sony can only speculate how many units they will sell by Nov 2027.

But Hey I could be wrong and sony could sell say 126million by nov 2027 and Xbox series could do 90million. Thats 216 million for the "hd twins" thats a 31% increase in that market segment. I expect it to grow, but 31% is one hell of on increase especially when we consider the rising PC, switch, mobile and cloud gaming markets.

During its latest earnings results, Sony explained that both software sales and gameplay engagement have dropped year-on-year – not a huge surprise given the huge increase in gaming during COVID-19 lockdowns.

"Taking this situation into account," Sony explained, "we intend to take action to increase user engagement in the second half of the fiscal year, during which major titles including first party software are scheduled to be released, primarily by increasing the supply of [PS5] hardware and promoting the new PlayStation Plus service."

Sony says it still expects to meet its forecast of 18 million units sold during this financial year, and is seeing positive signs for supply after lockdowns lifted in Shanghai, a major components production hub. As a result, Sony now believes it can bring forward production and sell many of those units during the holiday season, a boom-time for sales.

So they admit their dependency to Chinese manufacturing caused suppy issues. So they lost a lot of software money (games, services, people bought XSS instead) because they were trying to save a few dollars per console.

Obviamente Sony.

Tell me something that i doesn't know.

When you go to expand the SSD memory, which is a shame for the size of video games.

Most importantly, when does J.R. Gets fired ?

Nothing is worth this much chasing. There was a time id do everything to get this piece of hardware. Anything but the scalpers, until i walked into the local electronics store and found a series x lying on the self. Never looked back with gamepass.

Its beyond joke that you still can't find these things on store.

I’m really not understanding the SSD comment. It’s relatively easy and cheap to do on the PS5. So I’m not understanding where the big issue lies. Maybe if it came with a 2TB internal drive it would be enough for most people but that would make the console extremely expensive.

I don't think so. I don't think that there won't enough buyers, but there is still the chip/resource shortage. If they haven't found another manufacturer with enough resources I doubt that this is doable.
Currently the chip-market is just not able to deliver more and there are no signs that this shortage will end soon.
If the could produce more they would already have done so but so far delivery numbers have not increased

This is what Sony was saying at the end of May of this year. They have already figured out the chip stuff. They will have enough, they say.

Beyond the initial ramp up "we're planning for heavy further increases in console production, taking us to production levels that we've never achieved before," Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan told an investor briefing. While COVID-19 lockdowns in China continue to create supply chain uncertainty, "things are definitely improving," he added.

The supply of PS5s will increase incrementally. Sony expects cumulative unit sales through the end of fiscal 2023 -- which will be the fourth year since the PS5's launch -- to surpass the total sales volume logged by the PS4 through its fourth year on the market. The PS5 is made in Japan and China. To protect against risks on the production side, Sony said it procured material from multiple suppliers. Sony also continuously engaged in negotiations to ensure a sound logistics network, the company said. "To expand production, it's important to further promote collaboration in procuring materials with the semiconductor and electronics business segments," said Yoshiharu Izumi, senior equity analyst at SBI Securities.

my god, the earnings for the transition period is literally fucking DOUBLE of what PS4's was. Thats some wild shit!

Actually almost triple what PS4 was. And the PS5 transitions profits compared to a loss transitioning to the PS4 is insane!

Yes, and in every console transition Sony had loses. But in this one Jimbo had record profits instead, and did it while acquiring more studios than ever before, while growing all their internal teams more than ever before, while signing more exclusives than ever before, while having a huge global pandemic/finantial crysis, with Switch performing great in hardware sales and experiencing a huge chips shortage.

Very impressive. But hey, PS5 is supposed to be doomed and some people want Jimbo to be fired.

I still want Jimbo fired! But I must admit that I sound like a crazy person after looking at all that data. I guess as a Playstation gamer, I just want the old Playstation back that loved talk to its fans and liked video games and didn't treat it as just a business.
