Steam Deck - What games suprised you on the deck.

I've had a Deck since April and the luster definitely does not wear off. If anything, you will find yourself playing it more and feeling less of an urge to play on desktop or console.
Yup, not only do I play more on it than on desktop (almost exclusively now), but I find myself fully enjoying/finishing games that were otherwise left rotting in my backlog.

Do not underestimate how comfortable it is to hold in your hands. The controls feel amazingly good and can last long play sessions. It's just bliss.

Halo MCC, pretty much locked 60 Max settings. I still can't believe I can play my favorite games of all time anytime and anywhere I want. A few ago I was sitting at work bored and I thought "fuck it, imma play some Halo."
How are you playing halo mcc? I thought it was not supported, can you play single player without any issues? How about just installing one game at a time. I have it and never finished any halo.

Yeah, campaigns work flawlessly, just select the option when you start the game to play without anti cheat. And yeah, you can select which games to install. I think it by default only installs reach but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Truth. The UI is also top notch. The speed that you can browse and change settings on Deck is really amazing. The per-game performance profiles make everything a breeze. Valve needs to make a spin-off controller like a Deck without a screen. Combined with a SFF PC running SteamOS it could make for a great console style experience.

I'm scared to death this will happen to mine when it gets shipped in October. I'm considering driving to Seattle (3,000 miles away mind you) just to pick it up!
Well you would be wasting a trip. The deck gets shipped from a warehouse in, Carol Stream Illinois. So if you are like me on the east coast (PA), it's half that amount of miles. Although I'd just get it delivered. Mine was here on Tuesday, and shipped on the Friday before. Plus gas is expensive.

If some scumbags driver steals it, it's on them to replace it. And I would expect it to be a rare occurrence. Good luck.

I tried a desktop 3400g apu a few years ago and I was amazed, but the trick is actually the resolution. Textures at that resolution are easy to run. Also the ram on this thing is insane and new as hell, since apus depend on ram, we have this awesome device.
This makes me wonder, why aren't budget gaming laptops being made with these style apus and 16gb memory. A laptop can up the wattage and cooling some so it will be able to easily handle 1080p. With a higher clock and a few more cus you could run everything at high and the price could be cheap too as the parts are more standard.

$400/500 gaming laptop would be nice. As it is now you have to get Intel integrated for that budget. Then half thr games won't even run.

Just to follow up. If this does happen to you I wouldnt worry too much. I contacted Steam customer support straight away and they were brilliant. They instantly refunded my old one and put me in front to purchase another straight away. The turn around was only a couple of days and I will get another next week, so you should be fine if this happens to you (it wont, i'm just unlucky..)

..Sorry to derail the thread. Just thought Dorago should know :)

Got my steam deck a week ago, and love this thing. I feel like the this is what I always wanted. It's not a console but a hybrid console/pc/handheld.
you can look at the deck as evolution of gameboy -> gba -> ds -> psp -> 3ds -> vita -> switch -> deck , but that doesn't quite cut it, to me its the tinkering device , like how a modded psp was back in the day but x 1000. Its a pc that has a console asthetic if you want it with verified games, but a pc with its desktop mode and non verified games, complete with jank, oh love that jank... :messenger_smiling_hearts:

Some of the best titles have been older games, indies and fps games from before the battle royal craze.

Been playing...err trying and testing: Thief the dark project (of course I am), Fallout 3, Wizardry 8, Grim Dawn, Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and 5, Dues EX -Revision, Dead island, Dead Space, Dark Messiah, Disgaea 2, Flatout 2, Need 4 speed shift, GTA4 , Max Payne, Low Magic age, keeperRL, Stalker SOC, System Shock, Tales of Besaria, Tomb Raider Anniversary, Vampire Survivors, EU4, Geometry Wars, Far Cry 3, Rouge Empire , Avorian, Batman origins, and FEAR.

Got epic , gog, and uplay games to work. Just installed Splinter cell and far cry blood dragon.

So far the most fun and has been on old games, and rogue likes. I haven't even put on Elden Ring or anything more recent then divinity 2 as I have already about maxed out my 768gb storage.

This device has brought me so much joy its insane.

The most shocking was seeing a game like FEAR run at 330 fps on a handheld with dynamic lighting, AA, and full max setting was kinda unreal. Of course i capped it to 45 fps , so now I can get 5.2 hours out of the game. Fear a monster pc game from early 360/ps3 era. It was silky smooth and just felt so perfect. Also GTA4, on a handheld. Something we will not see on switch or anywhere probably because of the gta trilogy backlash.

The controls are so awesome too. Getting them just right, seeing community layouts and macro designs, things you wouldn't think of. Some people have complex movement routines macros for some games. Radials for left mouse pad, and just seen today that you can emulate trackball with momentum and even behavior for sliding and letting go at the end like a real trackball. Multiple button presses, combos, and sentivity layers and mode switches are all possible. Saving and exporting for others to use.

I would love to get Stalker 2012 complete on here, but don't know how to install a mod exe.
Can't stand I can't buy Alpha protocol as it's delisted from all stores (i own it on ps3), and would love it on here.

Out of that list, I have mostly been playing Thief, FEAR, Need for speed shift, Splinter Cell, Vampire Survivors and Rogue Empire.

What games are you playing, if you have a deck, or are you looking forward to?
Okay, so how was might and magic 3? I was planning decking that one asap

there are some laptops with these apus, for example the AMD 5500U on $450-$500 laptops

Seems like a good way to rediscover some favourites in your library. What are you using to install gog and epic games? Just binary downloads from gog and weird command line stuff for epic?

Heroic game launcher.
1. Go into desktop linux mode.
2. Download, from discover app : Heroic launcher, and Flatseal.
3. Install both.
4. go into flatseal, look for heroic's section and set file access to the sd card slot (or entire file system, really up to you)
5. Heroic has options to login to both Epic store and GOG, so login.
6. You will now see your libraries.
7. Download a game.
8. Go into the settings for the game and change the wine /proton version to a different version (you can always switch it any time.) For my install the default wine selection doesn't set and you have to set it after install.
9. Launch game to run it one time (if it gives issues don't worry too much about it as you will be running these from steam) .
10. Download from the net heroic bash launcher: https://github.com/redromnon/HeroicBashLauncher , or Boilr (on discover) i prefer bash launcher. Add bash launcher to your heroic directory.
11. Launch bash launcher. (this imports your games into steam, as well as importing artwork for the icons).
12. Go into steam game mode - > go to your library and then on far right there is "non steam games" section. The installed games will show there. From there I add to favorites.
(after the first install only #7-12 is necessary for each game)

Some notes and tips for non steam games:
--- You can set compatibility mode for each game to use different proton versions. right click on game -> properties -> compatibility - force proton and choose the version in the list.
-- Try proton experimental , if regular proton fails. it works 9/10 times.
-- download the ProtonUpQt from discover store and look for Proton GE (glorious eggroll -don't ask, no cluewhy), and install that.
- There is also regular wine versions that can ge installed, but those will only work in desktop mode.
-- Try other proton versions, Check protondb for info on what others have used. Just know each version takes up around 1gb of space.
-- If you need to install a mod patch, you can do it in heroic, there is a spot to "run on prefix" and it will act just like a windows installer once you find the prefix location.
- you can switch
-- controls for non steam games are in a seperate database then steam games
, if you rename the game the appid (found in the store , like "379430" seen in the store address you can get the community controls from steam for that game otherwise it will be nothing or 1 or 2.
You can then rename the game back to the normal name once you have downloaded controls you like, or just leave it as the icon shows the game.

This seems like a lot, but most steam games work 9/10 without issues. Gog/epic a bit different.
Ubisoft connect i followed a youtube guide. Once installed you can install games from that, you have to use the launcher though and all steam controls are set for the launcher not the game.

Still don't know how to do individual installers for games. I want to install stand alone stalker mods/conversions but that will have to wait. I am out of space now anyway.

I put a couple of hours into a Heroic run of Halo 3 tonight and it's still one of the best damn first-person shooters you can buy today. Looks amazing on Deck and runs flawlessly. While it wasn't designed for handheld play, the checkpoint system is literally perfect for play in short bursts. It boggles my mind that Bungie went from this to Destiny.

It sucks not to be able to play online, but I'm going to run though the campaigns for CE, 2, 3, ODST, and Reach before I go back to work at the beginning of September. Halo 4 can suck my considerable chode.

Has anybody here played Spartan Assault? I never bothered with it but after spending a while bunch of time with The Ascent this year, I'm itching for more twin stick shooters.

Also, what are the best RTS games for this thing? I'm wary of controls being too fiddly for the gameplad setup. I want to play on the couch and in bed, not at a desk with a mouse and keyboard.

I own a Switch and never really felt the "Switch Effect", even when commuting to and from work with it on the daily. For my part, its purpose is just an avenue to access Nintendo games.

Even with the portability concessions accounted for in the games' design and hardware features like quick resume, it always felt like a compromise versus playing them in more ideal conditions like from my sofa or comfy desk chair. Though granted, I don't have kids monopolizing my means of play there.

Anecdotally, I found that running a short-scope arcade game like Alien Soldier on my long-dead Nvidia Shield did a better job of scratching the itch during those moments of downtime than more impressive titles like Mario Odyssey or Breath of the Wild - something that starts at the beginning every time and doesn't require that "where did i leave off again?" reorientation each time you start it back up.

Spot the moron whose base standard of argumentation is "I have one therefore those who don't must be jealous".

God help you if you fall into GAF's average 30-40 age bracket.
Wow. You’re salty.

I didn’t say you were jealous. I was suggesting that you clearly don’t own a Steam Deck (seemingly confirmed) so you have absolutely nothing useful or interesting to add to the conversation.

Your dreary and boring posts confirm this.

Salty over what, not having a Steam Deck? That's just a re-framing of the jealousy angle, made evident by your intent on dividing the discussion into haves and have-nots. 'Confirmed' indeed.

Or are you referring to salt over having a lesser form of internet life nip at my heels for daring to speak out against their favourite new toy?

Either way, not very impressive for the two days you took to think about it. We had a discussion and everything while you were occupied :messenger_open_mouth:

You don't own a deck and you're here shitting on portable gaming because the Switch weighs into it, and you're calling him a moron for dismissing your point about it being not surprising.

The real surprise that the deck brings to the table, is that it's a console that runs PC games. More than ever before, the UI and experience is console-like in executition. More than Steam Machines SteamOS and big picture mode. It's also open to emulation.

Salty is an understatement.

Behold, more lesser forms of internet life nipping at your heels, because you are being a piece of shit. :pie_open_mouth:

Owning a Steam Deck is not an exclusive ticket to participating in discussion of portable PC gaming.

Moreover, I called him a moron for coming at me with baby's first collude-and-exclude fallacy while having nothing else to say.
Since you seem intent on continuing that approach - albeit with an actual point sandwiched between the yapping - I'll show restraint and dub thee Moron One and a Half.

I'll give you the console-like execution since the new UI is very nice, but Valve didn't invent handhelds that can run PC games, nor ones that can emulate.

Having owned two of them before the phenomenon broke big by way of a slick 'executition' - and before Switch became the common touchstone for portable gaming, for that matter - I speak with confidence when I say nicer hardware and a swish UI doesn't transform the PC title experience into something universally new and surprising.

But of course, as a Verified Deck Owner, you get to pretend that having a
steam_deck_logo.svg
next to your name grants ownership over that particular domain of human experience.

Doubtful until proven otherwise. If you can't back up your seethe up beyond petty fallacy, you'd be better off finding a hugbox to post in.

I'm sure DeckEra has been founded by now, given the rate at which GAF has been birthing fringe offshoots recently.

I've owned every handheld gaming device you fucking clowns can think of, including the dogshit N-Gage and multiple Shield devices. Each and every other handheld gaming system I have owned has been part novelty and has come with compromises. Most have seen completely different versions of multiplatform games, created specifically for those devices due to hardware limitations, Switch included.

Steam Deck is just a handheld PC yes, but it's arguably the first time a major player has put together a system with almost no compromises. It isn't perfect and it has plenty of flaws, but it isn't like anything else that has come before outside of its appearance. It may as well be thought of as a gaming laptop in a Switch-like form factor, running a tidy modern OS that has both a gaming mode and a desktop mode complete with installable apps that don't need to be offered though a storefront or go though some kind of verification process.

There are other handheld PCs but the Steam Deck is arguably both the most successful and best executed so far. In many senses it is new and amazing, and at the same time it doesn't offer anything that you can't get on a regular desktop PC outside of portability. But that portability has tremendous value. You might not care about being able to play Stray while riding the subway, but that doesn't mean that to others it doesn't represent a magical experience, and it's impossible to ignore the fact that such things are experiential and if you haven't experienced it, you aren't speaking with all the facts.

That's not to say that only people who own Steam Decks can discuss it. That's just ridiculous.

when do we think we’ll get a Steam Deck OLED?
It would be a nice option to have but I can't see it happening anytime soon. The screen it has is pretty good overall though so I'm not in a huge rush to buy a refresh. They'd also have to enable background downloads so as to avoid burn in on an OLED screen. That they haven't done it yet anyway is mind-boggling.

Awesome. Can't wait to play those. Only played them on pc, halo 1 for about an hour and halo2 i got to a part you played as one of the aliens. I didn't get much further. Then there was Reach. When mcc came out I tried playing reach first, but it was kinda boring, things didn't make sense and no master cheif. Seemed weird. Maybe if I played the others it would.

Whats wrong with halo 4? Is that first non bungie halo? I thought halo 5 was the strange one, from what I heard.

Rts, I'd imagine any where you don't need to flex across the map to quickly will be fine. I know age of empires is playable. Command and conquer and of course red alert 3 are playable. Also home world, haven't tried dit yet but should be fun on it, as it's not a traditional map.
Grand strategy works on here too. Crusader kings 3 and eu4 I have tried both.

When you get chance, play Halo 3 and ODST. They're both fantastic. The original is a classic too and Halo 2 has some brilliant moments. Those 4 games are Bungies.

Halo 4 was 343's first Halo game. It couor have been very good, but they introduced the Prometheans as enemies and they are boring to fight and have terrible weapons. It's not horrid, but it's certainly not up there with Halo 3.

I'll get Homeworld Remastered and maybe Homeworld Deserts of Kharak. I'll have to figure out mouse regions I think. I haven't been able to find anybody that has tried World in Conflict. I fancy playing though that on SD if it works ok.

I think what impresses me most is you get a lot of the PC titles and advantages of that experience, but it's starting to lean more toward a portable console-like streamlined experience. So you get magnitudes better versions of Switch games(and can outright play its exclusives too) and thousands of PC games day 1 without all the fucking around we sometimes do with a PC, at least, not as much. It's a nice happy medium.

Nothing too surprising in terms of performance. I knew what to expect going in.

What surprises me is SteamOS. I have over 400 Deck Verified games. Just about all of them in my testing have 'worked' out of the box. The whole experience has been streamlined to the point I forget it's a PC. I have not even tried emulation yet, and it's supposed to be one of the Deck's strengths. If it sells anywhere close to what I think it will, the Big Three need to go back to the drawing board.

Now I kinda wonder what a Steambox would be like. Basically a more powerful version of this for the TV. No disc drive, no screen, just hardware and a controller. I bet putting $600 into that would get you a decent technical upgrade over XSX/PS5. But the games wouldn't be as optimized.

The games wouldn't be optimized to the same degree but it with FSR and VRS solutions already in place, it would be highly user scalable and would support mods and emulators from the off. I could see that being a product I'd buy.

I've had my Steam Deck for a few weeks. Valheim was the game I was most looking forward to playing, but I played it for just over 10 hours and I just can't get into it. I have tried about 15 demos so far, but nothing has really grabbed me yet. I had high hopes for Cult of the Lamb, but 3 hours with the demo just did not pull me in (the world building is interesting, but the heavy reliance on roguelike combat makes progression too much of a chore).

Just reading this thread, Ryse: Son of Rome for under $10 sounds like it is worth a shot. I like third person games, and in another thread, several people recommended Mount and Blade. Bannerlord currently sells for $49.99, so if/when it goes on sale, I will give that as shot as well.

I don't understand. How small should it be? Fit in your pocket? You aren't going to get the performance then. Might as well stick to your phone.
Phones have shit controls and well lack games i want to play besides emulation.
All i wanted the steam deck for is playing my steam games on the couch and it’s the perfect device for it.

Steam deck 2 wishlist.
Fix the rumble
Those trackpads are well something😅
Fing hated them on the steam controller
Oled screen
Not bigger then the switch oled.
Keep the joysticks. Great for fps games
Better docked functionality.
Keep the 720p res plenty for that size
And better batterylife
