Before complaining about price, maybe you should learn the differences between money and currency and how it's made.

Would pay $/€70 for a game if I got it forever on all platforms past, present and future.
I buy Halo 6 on Xbox Series X2, I get it and any future version of Halo 6 when I pay $/€70.

The point dude... the point...
That complaining can help companies reverse changes they made. Cool, it worked for Xbox and they reversed position within hours/days whatever. Worked with PlayStation too with Horizon’s ps4 to ps5 price point which was changed shortly after complaints. The $70 price point has been implemented for years now. They’ve heard the complaints for years and they’re not changing it. Its beyond time to move on and accept it and wait for a sale if people don’t want to pay an extra $10.

Not everything goes up in price with inflation since inflation is calculated with specific items that are expected to not change in price, the items change by country.
Some items get cheaper despite inflation over time simply by optimization on production and the scale of production, the examples are all around you, including games.

Going from current inflation rates, games should be $100 each by now.

I think it's hilarious that people bitch about $70 games but then also complain that the mobile space has games which are free to play and you pay for microtransactions. You can't have it both ways! Game studios and publishers need to make money somehow!

Yep.

Games have been $60 for roughly 2 decades. Prices were bound to increase at some point. OP, you will make a bigger impact by simply not buying them vs trying to get everyone to agree with you. Anyway screw game price complaints....I'm more perturbed that I spent ~$300 on groceries today when 3 years ago it would have probably been ~$200.......and that was a necessity, unlike video games.

Nah you're confusing supply and demand with inflation. Prices going up doesn't necessarily mean it's suddenly more expensive to produce products, it's almost always that your currency is being devalued and has less purchasing power. Prices rising isn't inflation, it's a symptom of inflation.

I'm going to guess that the majority of people who don't understand inflation's effects on the value of the dollar (and the fact that $70 is not more expensive than historical prices) are just clueless youngins whose full understanding of the world comes from watching TikTok videos all day long.

Of course it's monetary. IDK If you guys know this, but the amount of console gamers is not really growing that much. If games are getting more expensive, how shall they cover the costs.

If it's not worth it to you then don't buy it. I won't be buying TLOU 1 for $70. There are other ways to play games. Unfortunately, ppl gotta get paid for doing their job. I mean, it's too bad that there is only one Publisher that is backed by a Trillion dollar company that can afford to cover the Millions/Billions of dollars they lose every year to make it look like your games are "free." I don't understand ppl who spend so much time trying to convince other ppl they shouldn't. Everything in my life has gotten more expensive, everything has gone up in price, some more than others. I have choices, so do you. Damn, I remember when Jordan's used to be $100-$150, shit they're $200-$250 now... So, I DON'T buy them anymore. I now buy their running shoes, I like the style and they're cheaper so it's worth it to me. What I don't do is go online and tell those ppl that do buy Jordans that they "Shouldn't" be buying them. Who the hell am I to say what is "worth it" to them? They chose to buy, I chose not too.

You're adults, you make choices everyday that are way more important than video game prices. Weigh the options and the value in said game. Is it worth it? Yes or No, that's it. Stop trying to convince others they shouldn't, you won't change their minds. Just like yours can't be either.

EDIT: PLEASE don't get it twisted, Microsoft is not a charity, just like these other publishers... they still want your money. They're just going about it in a round about way. They're hoping they can expand their base by 10's of Millions to make up for the losses, cause there are losses. Right now MS can cover those losses. If they're not able to meet those sub goals, it will be up to MS to make the call on what to do next.

tell me again how is calculated? because afaik inflation is calculated as the increase on price of a basket of products that changes over countries.
Anyway, despite what inflation is as a concept and how is calculated, it still isn't a valid reason to asume that game prices should rise, the increase is purely arbitrary and not a necessity, most products tied to inflation do see increases because of the production chain.

Thread title is also inaccurate. I’ve never seen anyone “in favor of” or wanting to pay extra money. I’ve only seen people present opinions on why the cost went up and say they understood why it did. Doesn’t mean they wouldn’t take the cheaper option if there was a choice.

If you were willing you pay full MSRP when games were $60 or tend to preorder collector editions, then I don't see why $10 would make a difference to you.
Video games are a relatively expensive leisure activity to begin with, and gamers often spend $10 every week without even thinking about.

If you were already the type to rarely, if ever, pay full MSRP for games, then I can't imagine that a $70 price tag would even be of concern to you if you're just going to buy it on sale or used anyway.
I guess for some gamers the FOMO is greater than getting the game later and saving 15-20 bucks, if not more.
Between all of these subscription services that give you monthly titles at no extra cost, my ever expanding backlog makes it very easy to not feel compelled to buy every single game at launch for full MSRP.

One of my favorite games of the past few years was Trials of Mana. It's gorgeous, stylish, has fantastic music, a decent story with great gameplay, no DLC (as far as I know at least) and retailed for something like €40. I'm all for more cheaper games like that, but as long as the general public demands hyperrealistic graphics and more expensive crap, they're gonna have to pay for that at some point.

And yeah, personally I have no issue with €70 games, I paid more than that in the 90's so it's no big deal now. I mostly play Nintendo games and JRPG's that I know I'll love so yeah, whatever.

If microtransactions didn't exist, $70 wouldn't be a problem. But they do, so being charged $70 and then having content behind a paid wall is stupid.

Just get GamePass

Problem solved

Next caller plz

Gamepass doesn't included add on content.

Personally I'd love if they didn't go up but honestly it's very game dependent what I'll pay. Something like Elden Ring or RDR2 I'd pay a higher price for, even if I'd rather the lower price.

Get a backlog big enough and it'll hardly matter because by the time you get to anything they're cheaper anyway.

Just be careful. Too many cycles can make it smooth.

I would pay 70 usd for game with long legs, Sony doesn’t develope these type of games. So 70 usd is too much of an ask. And I have just pre-ordered new cod for 70 gbp.

I get it’s the principle but you can always be more discerning with how you spend your money. Most games I’ve purchased have been on sale. I don’t mind waiting years potentially to play a game. As a consumer you always have the upper hand. Their tactics do not work without your participation.

I honestly couldn't care less, if I'm willing to pay $60 for something the extra $10 won't make me give up on the purchase. Would it be nice to pay less? Obviously. But nowadays the number of games I'm willing to pay full price for (or even endure playing it day one without all the patches and whatnot) is so small that the extra $10 every 4 or so months is kinda meaningless for me.

At £60-70 I'd expect to get the full game and ALL dlc's included in that package.

These days devs/publishers think its okay to cut up their game into bits and think its okay to charge more on top from micro-transactions. Even on full priced games.

Thanks for the reminder. I am gonna wait for sales to buy TLOU Part 1, cause I have finished it on PS3, and played the PS4 remaster many times already (via PS+).

I am gonna pre-order GoW Ragnarok tho.

Edit: For me, it doesn't make any difference if I pay $60 or $70 on a new game, since I usually buy 3-5 titles or even less at launch (full price) per year.

Most of the times, I waited for the cheap sales or get them free via PS+ and other free offers on PC.

I was a teenager when new PC games cost £25-30 RRP (£35 for sports titles, simulators and fancy shit). Now PC games cost max £40 (from non-dodgy key reseller sites on release day, not Steam/MS Store/etc of course, there its up to £55, like Psychonauts 2 was, lol what a joke)

A ~33% increase after 20 bloody years! OooOOoooo! 👻

Console games have gone from £40-50 to £60-£70 RRP but you still get many on release for £50, why even waste time thinking about this, there aren't that many AAA releases worth buying in any given month to even care about this, its like £120 extra year MAX, more like £40-60, if that amount of increase is a consideration for you then you shouldn't be buying luxury items like computer games in the first place.

Even with that last point you can just wait for deep sales, I just don't even see a discussion worth having unless you have OCD about buying every new release, that also means you must have nothing else to do in your life, like you have a job obviously but you don't have to look after a family/household/do anything else except play games, because otherwise there wouldn't be enough time to even play all those games (even if you mainline them and do minimum percentage runs, not 100%).

Look I love playing computer games but you need to spend time doing other stuff and bettering yourself (I do a bare minimum of this as well and I should do more) to live a meaningful life imo, playing games for 8 hours a day, 7 days a week isn't tenable for your whole adult life unless you have a trust fund, win the lottery or have some business you manage remotely and requires minimal input.
I paid £80 for donkey kong 64 more than 20 years ago. Back then cartridge prices were atrocious but I didn't see this kind of bitching.

I mean it is extremely easy to not buy $70 games, just don’t buy them. There are hundreds of other games to play. I’m fine missing out on the latest boring 3rd person action game written by garbage f tier video game writers. Easy to pass on this since I don’t really care for these games. If I did I would probably justify spending it.

I'm not going to argue for or against a $70 price point. I will continue to pay what I feel is the right price vs value. I was paying much more than $70 for games back in the 90's when I would import and buy Neo Geo carts.

Inflation happens. That being said, I'm only paying $70 once a year max, everything else can come in a sale. Maybe this year it's Ragnarok, I dunno.

Big publishers literally printing money with manipulative tactics and sell often the same game over and over again.

Yet there are still people saying/defending "but inflation!".

So? Why not give it back because business and abusive tactics and work environments work so well for ya?

They could afford a better environment and lower prices. They simply don't want to because people, especially those making money, always want one thing above anything else: more of that green shit. (and while normal people got to decide which game they buy for which price and have to put a thought or two into it because normal people can't print money, upper management worries about where to park their yacht(s))

No matter what game, $70 is too much. And people OK with that can be OK with $80, $90, $100...

People need to get less attached from those companies.
People were cheering $100 editions of a game so they can play 4 days early. Let people pay for whatever they like, it's their money. As long as it doesn't affect the game.

I've not paid 70 yet this gen and I won't for the rest of the gen. I'll just wait until its on sale or even better I'll pick up cheap second hand copies as I feel that better serves in sending the message.

Pretty different cases dude. $100 for early acess don't make the others looking foward $60 for day one. Choise to get early and day one are very different from 'If DoN'T lIkEd, Don'T bUy'.

And 'its the their money' is a very low bait argument. If you saw me telling you what you need to do with your money in my comment I have bad news for you.

At least in the US, Blu-Ray prices have definitely gone up a bit over the years. Not $10, but still a bit. Not sure why OP said DVDs, virtually no physical media buyer still buys those.

And trying to say movie ticket price increases is irrelevant due to streaming services…

Bruh, streaming services cost more as well.

Inflation is a thing. It sucks, but it is what it is. At least you can wait and get the game cheaper later. Whereas streaming will cost you the same as everyone else, and you either see a movie in theaters or not.

Why is it different? People were paying $100 to play a game "day one" which was 4 days earlier than "day 1 two". 4 days isn't early access. It's not in beta then out of beta in 4 days. I'm just saying people have already paid $100 for games.

$70 games day one are no different and those who don't want to play day one can wait for that $10 price drop much the same. Let people pay what they think it's worth. When there isn't a choice is when there is a problem.

You said if people are ok with $70 they are ok with $100. Some were already ok with $100 some are, some aren't. It's not meant to be bait. It's just fewer people will buy it. The market decides with choice and prices drop.

I already told you the difference.

Is about getting early or in the release date. There is a huge difference when you ask people to either 'don't buy' or 'wait for discont'.

Someone paying to get 'early' don't deprive you from getting in the release date. Unlike saying 'don't like it, don't buy', waiting for some future discount that could happen or not.

It's about options if still not clear to you.

I remember when Uncharted on the PS3 (the first one) was €69,99 on release. I'm sure it happened with certain PS4 titles too. They always try this price point when a "new" generation comes around and it never sticks. Consumers are used to paying 60 for a standard release and they don't seem to budge.

Publishers have already found multiple other ways to make more money, be it through special editions, DLC, season passes and whatever else they can dream up. The industry is otherwise healthy, so I don't see what this price hike would accomplish. You're a fool if you think it'll improve the quality in any way.

People STILL buy dvd, believe it or not. A few eeks ago on facebookmarket i bought the blu ray set of Moonfall and The unbearable weight of massive talent for $9. I end up taking out the dvd and sell them on ebay and they sell..... relatively quickly. And i agree blu ray and 4k price went up, bu roughtly $5 each, and as some studio even only releasing 4k with no blu ray disc. Sonic 2 and The Lost city as recent prime example.

USA games are dirt cheap compare to japan. Their average games is nearly $80-90 dollar converted to usa and people here complain about 70 price, good grief.

$70 for PS5 games makes it an exclusives only platform and increased my spending on Steam. Didn't think $10 would be such a big deal but when the same game is cheaper everywhere else it's just not a good look.

All of this.

Like...if you ask me "do you want to pay more?" Obviously the answer is "fuck no". But do I get why games are more expensive? Yes, I do for sure.

Also, you guys don't have to buy games on day one. If it's too expensive, just wait for a price you think its worth it and buy them then.

Also, holy shit at TLoU. The way that franchise ruined some of your brains is concerning...
