On This Day: Electronics giant Sony had eyes on the UK games console market, with PlayStation due to launch in just over a month

You are literally splitting hairs with semantics. Considering we all call it launch window now, especially with the holiday when most get their consoles after launch. :pie_eyeroll:

Nah, "launch window" is bullshit. Launch is what you can buy with the system on Day 1. I got mine on 9/9/95 with Ridge Racer, Toshinden, Air Combat, Rayman, and NBA Jam. The bigger games like Tekken and football didn't hit until later.

I got mine in December that same year. It was a launch game for me 🤷‍♀️

When the PSX was launching, Sony had no first-party development studios. You know how they got their first one?
Hence money alone wasn't the recipe for success. All companies have to spend. Buying Psygnosis was a step in the right direction but wasn't the sole reason PS1 smashed it.

They had 989 Studios that was built in-house and 989 Sports became Sony San Diego.

Japan Studio was founded before the launch of the PS1 as well.

They also had Psygnosis which was purchased before the PSX ever hit retail shelves.

They also had their publishing arm for well over a decade before the PS1 launch that worked with many of the studios and later became SCEA after the launch.

Sony had no IP and Imagesoft was shite. What great franchises were they responsible for? Sony had to buy a big publisher and devs to have great games ready for the launch.

I bet everyone who had a PS1 remembers the day they first bought/played one.
I was far from an early adopter - got mine at the end of 1996 - but I still remember the night I got it. Getting Resident Evil as my first game for the console was one of my best decisions ever in gaming. I wish I could say a new console ever managed to amaze me like that after Gen 5.

haha OP will eat crow for that. The so-called “Sony beast” is just 32 bit, while Ataris new machine has 64 bit. DO THE MATH!

Great catch, though. Damn I miss the 90s

Bro, Japan Studio that they started in 1993 is responsible for some great games.

The list is right in the wiki.

989's list is there as well.

Exactly. All these studios were formed when Sony was getting ready for the PS1 launch. They had Sony Imagesoft prior to these studios. Which made average games at best for Nintendo and Sega. People equate Sony buying Psygnosis akin to MS buying AB even though they are totally different purchases. One was borne of necessity the other of just flexing their financial might.

People comparing Psygnosis to ABK/Zenimax as “justification” are as disingenuous cuntsole warring creampied as it gets. Almost, but not quite up there with the easy trophy thread.

Man I remember all that shit when it was coming out.
The mom and pop game store i used to always go to had a super hardcore gamer that worked there. He imported a playstation and when he worked he would set it up on one of the tvs and he let us play. Seeing/playing ridge racer in particular was a big holy shit moment. I knew right then I wanted as soon as it came out.

When the shop started taking preorders for the us release I had already saved up money and credit since first playing the playstation that I paid it in full and preordered ridge racer and battle arena toshinden. So I go up to the store with friends and when we walked in they said hey good news and I said what, he holds up the PS1 box and the two games and said come get them.

That was 9 days before launch.
Everyone was so jealous and angry they either couldn't afford it or that they didn't get one of the handful systems they were getting pre-ordered. I was in awe, thankfully my friends mom was still in the parking lot and we got her to drop us off at my house (we were 15). Still gives my joy to this day thinking back.

I was a customer of that place till they closed.
