PlayStation 5 Special Edition Consoles Under Development?

PlayStation consoles have had many variations throughout their lifespans. Apart from the hardware revisions, PlayStation has released several limited and special edition versions of its consoles. However, two years later, Sony has not done much for the PlayStation 5.

Compared to Sony’s latest console, the PlayStation 4 had numerous limited edition variants in the same amount of time. While this could be attributed to the easily replaceable faceplates on the PS5, it seems odd for Sony to miss out on an opportunity to sell more consoles. However, this might be changing soon.

A new job listing for Packaging Planner at PlayStation hints at potential limited edition PS5 consoles, among other things.

The job description states that the role coordinates packaging projects, including Special Editions, Collector’s Editions, and Hardware Bundles. This is interesting considering the lack of current special edition consoles from Sony. This could mean Sony is finally gearing up for more than one special edition bundle for their current console.

As mentioned earlier, PlayStation’s recent offerings have mostly been limited to a few faceplate variants. Perhaps the company is looking to utilize the PS5’s modular design to offer limited edition faceplates of some kind. It would also make sense to expect traditional special edition variants, in line with previous PlayStation consoles.

Moreover, the job listing also focuses on Collector’s Editions. PlayStation has already revealed the collector’s edition for God of War Ragnarok. With an impressive line-up for 2023 and beyond, Sony could be looking to work on more collector’s editions for upcoming titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Wolverine.

With supply shortages expected to ease in the coming months, Sony could look at an extensive offering of special and limited edition PlayStation consoles.

Recently, Sony has reported a loss in revenue due to the overall decrease in consumer demand. However, the future is looking extremely promising for the PlayStation 5. A number of new console variants should only add to an already exciting time for the PlayStation 5. Consumers are likely to be excited at the proposition of brand-new console variants.

I imagine they'll be console bundles with the special edition face plates included and a separate pre-order thing with just the faceplates.

That Cyberpunk 2077 theme Xbox Console was so beautiful, they are not so overpriced, and exclusive, I should have gotten one

I guess Sony haven’t done that because they can’t even keep up with demand. I fue time they will release special editions.

I wonder if they would sell the faceplates from such editions separately, too.

I am more surprised that dbrand didn't partner with major publishers yet to release special editions of their dark plates.

they still only have 3 normal color variations

Here you go, they took down several companies like this.

Which ultimately means, they are already planning to do it themselves and utilize its potential.
Gotta be a god of war ps5 right?

Yeah demand and supply was messed up, but now after COVID, PC GPU Prices have also come down to normal, this should no longer be the case.

A mix between a Pro and an S? So... just the standard console then?

Couldn't customised faceplates be the special gold master deluxe special edition preorder bonus instead of useless crap like "5 consumable upgrades" and things of that ilk?

I'm hoping we start seeing these across the board. As long as they aren't upselling them (typically they don't) getting a LE model is a smart move. People pay more for these at generations end, an easy way to get an extra $50-$100 out of your old hardware.

I understand that the 'special and collector editions' bit is for games, not for consoles. Regarding new packaging for consoles they mention bundles. I assume it also would include the packaging of PSVR2 and accesories like controllers in new colors, etc.

I assume they didn't release special editions due to the lack of chip, they couldn't even manufacture enough normal consoles, so even less special editions.

What I don't understand is why they don't release plates and gamepads in more colors. I would make a few of them inspired by popular games and would sell them separatedly and -once they can allow it after they solve the chips shortage issue- in bundles/'special editions' of consoles.

P.S.: These are the models I have for GameCube and 3DS:

This needs some clarification. There is clearly very high demand for PS5, the issue has been supply. If they're making console variant, that would signal a big improvement of the supply chain because those are going to be even more sought after than the regular systems, and you wouldn't want to take away from the supply capacity of the regular models when those are at very high demand themselves.

A big impact in the revenue loss for Q2 was due to lack of big 1P or 3P software releases. The upcoming Fall season should see several big releases on both fronts to help remedy that, along with a large increase in unit supply. So I think it's better to say the revenue drop was due to lack of supply rather than lack of demand, that goes for hardware and software.

Loved me those PS4 Pro SE's went through shit to get this one, they kept sending me emails saying that the order was cancelled but the console kept showing as instock at the store so I just immediately re-reserved by click and collect. I did that about 13 times through the day and turned up at the store after work, only for someone to take my order say "oh it hasent been picked yet" and go get it. I'm already paid and bagging up when some dude rushes out back saying "Oh god did you sell the PS4 out back?"

Not my problem I took the bag and walked out.

Thing is as seen here it did have a click and collect sticker matching an older reservation number (not the one I finally used to get the order) so I'm assuming a staff member was eyeing it up.

Wasn't the whole idea behind replaceable plates to sell differently themed ones to as many PS5 owners as possible, multiple times?

Sony seems to be doing the bare minimum, not surprising. The plates idea is pretty good but they are doing very little with it.

Spider-Man isn’t till late next year I thought there would be something earlier

Ragnarok Special Edition PS5 seems pretty obvious. However since the plate is removable there should also be special edition plates.
The reason a special edition console makes more sense is besides the plates they can make the center part customized maybe with symbols or engravings (and maybe even a different color) and also give a special edition controller it’s why it’s laughable everyone said they would only make plates as the new thing since plates can’t replace the above 2 things

I want one cause I cannot stand the white console after seeing it in person and more importantly I already have a white dualsense so being forced to have another would suck if I bought the console now.

Good news, if you cannot stand the white console you can always put it on its side

Plates can’t customize the center middle part of the console like a limited edition console and plates don’t give you special edition controllers. Plates were never gonna be a replacement and I’m glad they aren’t as someone who doesn’t own a ps5 plates don’t help someone like me
