And I hate Sony for abandoning the Vita..

But seriously, I’m impressed by this little machine the sound that the joycons make when they attach. 1 2 switch was great fun with the family who are not gamers…

I also tried Metroid Dread, and OMG what an amazing game it is… ( I have already played Super, Zero, and Fusion)

I think I might need a switch to complement my PS5…

So I ask you, gaf what should I get for the switch if I plan to buy one? Should go for the V2 or the Oled model?

Regarding the games, I already have 3 games in mind: Zelda Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and of course Metroid Dread.

Is there something to know before buying a Switch? drift issues? Joycons having issues connecting etc…

As a PlayStation only gamer, I have to say that I’m very excited for the idea of buying a Switch 💋

Go for the OLED because it has a vastly better display and you probably are used to it from your TV anyways. Don't take an inferior image just because you play mobile.

Joycons are notoriously known for drift issues. Then again you hear this about PS5 controllers as well and Xbox, too. It's a thing because they're made as they are. You can always estimate at least 1% of manufactured goods to be flawed when they leave production line (and still more that'll show issues shortly afterwards) and with so many pads around and vocal people, chances are high you're hearing about it.

I'd recommend buy another pair in case you send one pair in. Not every vendor will provide you a pad while you're waiting on the new/repaired one.

Some vendors offer additional warranties on top of that year you usually get by Nintendo/Sony/MS. Might be worth taking and also using it before it's over, nevertheless your pad is faulty or not. This way you get a brand new one and your extra warranty money's worth.

Connectivity issues are practically non-existend with original hardware. That means if you don't receive a faulty one or take third party controllers where I've frequently read about said issues.

Good system.

Buy it from Costco as gaming devices arent under their 90 day electronics policy. If you are going to buy lots of games, buy a big SD card from Costco too for cheap. I got my nieces a 256 gb card a year ago.

If you buy a second joycon, look into Costco too. Watch out for joycon drifting. It's real. Both their joycons have big drift as if they are Fisher Price quality. I've always heard about Sony and MS controllers having drift, but never seen it as bad as the joycons. It's terrible after years of use.

As an option, you can always go for their pro Gamepad which is like a standard Xbox/PS kind of controller meant for playing when docked. My bro and his kids says it's a rock solid gamepad (I've never tried it out).

If you are really cautious, look into buying those protective screens for $15 off Amazon. I think it was a two pack. It's a blessing. My nieces' Switch doesnt have a scratch yet.

When I got them the Switch, I bought them a second joycon. To make it easier to recognize L and R and prevent them and their friends joycons getting mixed up and confusing, I purposely bought them the joycon that was I think yellow and purple. It sticks out and made it easy for them to recognize.

OLED is worth it. If you’re worried about joycons and use it mostly portable you can buy a splitpad pro, looks goofy but really comfortable.

At this point there are just too many good games in the catalog to count, but since you mention Mario games you should consider 3D world if you haven’t played it, it’s awesome.

Joycons fail in two primary ways: Stick drift and SL/SR failure. Both are simple fixes and require no soldering. A replacement stick costs around a dollar and is really easy. Fixing the SL/SR also requires changing a single ribbon cable but its slightly more involved since you need to remove the battery cover to safely flip the latch on the connector. A replacement ribbon cable is 10-20 cents. Ping me if you get a used one with either issue and I can walk you through fixing it. Neither issues are worth worrying about.

Everyone uses their Switch differently, some are an even split between docked/handheld, some are strictly one or the other. If you play docked, get a Pro controller, it's worth it.

Get a Pro controller, you need this to fully enjoy the Switch (and before you damage your hand with the Cons), one of the best controller ever, It had incredible battery life (Triple the time of a PS4 controller), very ergonomic design with a more accurate Gyro

Its funny how Nintendo could make the best (Pros) and worst (Cons) at the same time

I’d definitely go for the OLED model. Almost wish my Switch would break so that I had an excuse to buy the OLED myself.

As for games I’d recommend to just check Metacritics BoAT list , you’ll likely find 99% of peoples recommendations there.

Would also recommend getting a Pro Controller.

OLED is nice, but if you're never going to take it out the dock, it's pointless. Just go for the cheaper one since they're both the same hardware. You know how you play.

There are actually some really good 3rd party pro controllers you can get for $24.

Nintendo really sticks it to you on their controllers.

Get the OLED all day long. It’s a fantastic system. Some games are really well suited to it, like Hades and Rocket League. I also use mine for first party stuff, 3D platformers and indies.

Zelda Mario and Metroid are amazing on the switch, great choices. If you have Nintendo nostalgia, smash bros is amazing even though I’m not a fighting fan. Skyward sword has some of the best puzzles and bosses of any Zelda ( I actually really enjoy the motion control). I’d go with oled even if you don’t play on the go much because the trade in value once the new switch comes out in the next couple years should be better. Bayonetta 2 is also a blast if you haven’t played that. Super Mario 3D all stars is great too (I got if for Mario Galaxy in HD).

what really happens when you own a switch is the difficult decision of buying a graphicallY superior version on the PlayStation or a portable version on the switch. Even if you don’t travel much with it, laying in bed or break time at work playing full console games is AMAZING and helps you actually beat games and get through your backlog.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Its also a great local multiplayer machine, perfect for hosting gaming party. Bunch of multiplayer games like Super Bomberman R, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Overcooked etc

2 pairs of joycon for 4 players is cheaper than 4 Xbox controllers or 4 DualSense

I wish you could copy over your Wii Skyward Sword save to the Switch version.

I don't really feel like playing through again.

Don't. If you're going the emulation route just get one of the Android consoles kicking around now.

But OP clearly is there for the Switch and its games and not emulation.

With a modded Switch you can

Run games at a higher resolution and frame rate
Can use any controller
Cheats
Activity log
Backup saves, system files in case the console breaks, remote file management
Screen overlays
Game streaming
Video/Music player, including background music while playing games

Plus whatever I can't think of atm

If you're going to play it mostly docked, you'll pretty much need a Pro Controller. I think it's my favourite this generation, even using it for PC gaming now.

Games-wise, you can't go wrong with the usual Mario and Zelda; the Xenoblade series and Fire Emblem if you're in for the long haul, Smash and Mario Kart for fun with friends/family, anything by Platinum Games, Fire Emblem: Three Hopes and Age of Calamity if you like these sorts of games.

THANK YOU all for your messages.

One last question please: can I buy NES/SNES/GBA games from the store? Or do I need to subscribe to their online service to play them classics?

Smasher89

If you had no Wii U, there is a bunch of games from that libary you could play like Donkey kong country tropical freeze and pikmin 3.
If you do have some freetime as well, Xenoblade 1, 2(+dlc) and 3(played in that order) and you got lots of hours to play (maybe not direcly after each other since they are long games).

Retrogames you only have nes and snes through the "online service", and n64/sega through "lonline service deluxe(apparently later 2 has very bad input delay).

With a modded Switch you can

Run games at a higher resolution and frame rate - poor 2015 SoC
Can use any controller - You can use most anyway, and an 8BitDo adapter sorts the rest out
Cheats - just, kinda pathetic
Activity log - very niche
Backup saves, system files in case the console breaks, remote file management - pretty much the only point I agree with on
Screen overlays - very niche and poor 2015 SoC
Game streaming - poor 2015 SoC and if you're streaming get an external capture card ffs
Video/Music player, including background music while playing games - quite niche, and poor 2015 SoC

Plus whatever I can't think of atm
And as to the downsides:
  • Need to find a Switch that is moddable,
    • now sell at a premium
    • have significantly worse battery life
    • perform slightly worse
    • only really available used (no support as warranties and legal protections all expired)
  • Not be able to go online with your Nintendo account.
    • therefore no online multiplayer, at least on Switch games
  • Void your warranty if there is one left
  • Risk bricking your Switch
All for things that other devices can do better in almost every regard. And again, clearly against what OP seems to want.

OLED model. No doubt about it.
  • BOTW is an absolute must.
  • Mario Odyssey is brilliant you should pick that up.
  • 3D World is fun too if you just want classic Mario levels.
  • Animal Crossing New Horizons is great but it's not for everyone.
  • Smash + Mario Kart are very popular so if you're into fighting/racing online or with friends they are a must.
  • Switch Sports is a load of fun. My favourite is Tennis and Bowling :)
  • If you want a JRPG then I highly recommend Shin Megami Tensei V. A lot of people call it "An Adult Pokemon Game". You explore an semi open/linear world, recruit demons to your party, and the combat is turn based. It's got a kinda of Souls feel to it and it can be punishing.

whatever you do, don't get a Switch Lite...
for real, DON'T!

also I would suggest getting third party replacements for the JoyCons to use in Handheld mode.
the ergonomics of that thing are horrible and the sticks will die on you eventually, besides being absolutely useless for shooters.
I have 1 completely fucked joycon and 2 with really bad drift that are technically still kinda useable tho.

Stay away from the Hori Split Pad tho, as that not only has no Gyro support, but it also has arguably even worse reliability than JoyCons, and the build quality of them is atrocious.

I would suggest the NexiGo joycons. they are ergonomic and feel way better than any other JoyCon replacement I tried.
they also have gyro aupport.

I think you're going to be shocked by what you've been missing honestly. Real video games focused on gameplay, and fun. Lots of them.

If I could only choose to own one system from this gen, it would be Switch.

Got a Switch lite thinking it would be great to have something portable only to hate it's tiny screen and game prices just being shitty. Personally I'd just go with a Steam Deck since you get to have that portability, huge flexibility in games, and so much more.

edit: the Joycons also never felt comfortable to use either being so small.

Switch is a great gaming system. The only downside, in my opinion, is that nowadays it is unplayable on a big screen. The image is so blurry to a point where I have headaches. On handheld mode it is awesome, especially on the OLED version.

never have any problems playing it on my 1440p or 4K displays lol. i know it's asking a lot of the switch to display 720-1080p on a 4K screen and yes it's blurry but lmao definitely not "unplayable".

OLED and Luigi's Mansion 3.
Great game, charming, fun, interesting bosses and not overly difficult. Just so well done and polished, couldn't stop smiling while playing it.

Have you consider people might have higher standards than you? Good for you if you are ok with that blurry low res mess that is coming out of the switch.

At this point there is literally no reason to buy a third party game that is verified by Deck if the said person owns a Deck, better performance, cheaper price (soon the games price different adds up that would out cost the Deck itself), better customizability, more input choice, mods, etc. and now its also portable. Most of all Deck is easily adjustable to save battery life. For me, after getting the Deck, Switch is only there to play the exclusives. Even connecting to TV Deck is easier, a HDMI cable takes less weight and less space than a Dock if you are carrying around in your bag on a trip.

Millions of people play it on their TVs. Hundreds of millions. I think the point he was making is that your opinion is the extreme outlier. Almost everyone in gaming is okay with it except you. It's the most popular console selling today by a large margin.

Nintendo really sticks it to you on their controllers.

If you're going to play Metroid Dread, buy a real Nintendo pro controller.

The control sticks in all those cheap controllers aren't up for the precise aiming in the game. It's obvious with the behavior of the long laser sight. I only switch to one of those third party controllers when I want a good d-pad.

I liked my switch but sold it because of lack of games that I wanted to play. Today I've come to the conclusion that the time to buy a Nintendo console is right at the end of its lifecycle because its set up better offline and online for backwards compatible games. It's Nintendo and if you want to buy the new one for better graphics its not worth it, mostly because the graphics are going to suck no matter if its brand new or 5 years old games.

Get the Oled

I am totally fine with the Switch graphics. They still seem high end to me.

Still, I am totally fine with playing really old games too.

You can't really download a game and play a game at the same time on a Switch. It will cause your game to have pauses in it. That surprised me.

People these days are saying 60Hz smartphone displays are 'unbearable'.

I don't really know what to say.

Well, downloading something takes up quite a bit of system resources, and the Switch has pretty much zero to spare.

'Downloading' also includes installation, which also takes up system resources.

I'd love a switch, but I'm not buying one until they come out with a 4K switch with more under the engine.

Hmm...if you're playing on a Switch that you will eventually have to give back you may want to consider setting up a MyNintendo account so that you can save your games to an SD card or cloud storage and be able to pick up where you left off when you eventually purchase your own new system.

Either that or make sure you do a system-to-system data transfer before you give theirs back to them.

You don't want all of your progress and save data stuck to your friends system.
