Meta has started rolling out the update to remove mandatory Facebook login for Quest headsets

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch

The update v43 has started rolling out progressively to Quest 2 users, so some might have the update by now, while some might need to wait for few more days or weeks.

Note, this will be rolling out to users gradually over time.

These features and enhancements will become available starting the week of August 8th, 2022.

Meta Accounts

We’ll begin rolling out a new Meta account structure in August 2022 that gives people more flexibility and control in VR. You’ll no longer be required to log into your Meta VR devices with a Facebook account. This also means:

  • We’re also evolving your Oculus profile to a new Meta Horizon profile, which you can customize as you see fit.
  • Your “Friends” will now become “Followers,” similar to Instagram’s existing model.
  • You’ll have the option to add your Facebook and/or Instagram account to the same Accounts Center as your Meta account, which unlocks connected experiences in VR.
  • We’re rolling out new controls to help you more easily manage your privacy settings.

Am I missing something or is Meta account just another word for Facebook account?
For some people this seems to make a huge difference because they had no problems at all using an Oculus account, but using a Facebook account instead was impossible.

Your Meta account is not a social media profile.
After you finish creating a Meta account, you’ll be prompted to create a Meta Horizon profile. Your Meta Horizon profile is your social profile in VR and other surfaces, like from a web browser.

I believe one of the biggest issues is you had to sign up with real details or Facebook would ban you. Essentially if they found out you where not who you claimed your account and all your games went bye bye.

Unsure if this is kept with Meta where I assume their is little to no consequence to signing up with a fake name.

Too little too late. You don't suffocate a fledgling medium in its crib with aggressively hostile practices, then try to sell its blue-tinged corpse back to us as totally fine.

Too late? What does this even mean? They're by far the market leaders in VR and theres no evidence they've 'suffocated' anything.

Did that really happen (I only ever had an Oculus account where I didn't have to provide any personal details)?
In case it did, I would understand the outrage back then.
I don't think this will be a problem going forward though, since Mark Zuckerberg himself said in a talk with Lex Fridman that he thinks that everyone is going to have multiple identities in the metaverse.

It's like saying the Cybertruck is "too little, too late" when it releases in 2023 because the customers' patience will have worn thin by then and then conclude that Tesla is done.

Gamers don't want to hear about NFTs (because we all know the industry will try to abuse anything), but a blockchain solution could eliminate the need for dozens of accounts / launchers (while extending user rights).

Meta accounts and Meta Horizon profiles are here! This update will roll out globally on a gradual basis, so if you don’t have the option to create a Meta account and Meta Horizon profile right away, you’ll get the update soon. Our new Meta account structure gives you more flexibility and control, letting you choose how you do and don’t show up—and whether Facebook and/or Instagram is part of your experience in VR and other surfaces where you use your Meta Horizon profile.

Any word on if they're removing this for the original Rift also? I've hardly touched my headset since they forced me to link
