Street Fighter 5 displaces Street Fighter II to become the best selling game in the series, and Capcoms 8th best-selling game overall.

This is like Burger King coming out and saying they've sold more hamburgers than McDonalds, but then you read the fine print and realize they're comparing every burger product they sell globally against McDonalds base hamburger sales in Ohio.

SFV sold half of what all versions of SFII sold on SNES alone.

Thanks god it didn't sell 150 millions or Capcom would haven turned into another dogturd company we won't have SF6 until 2087.

That being said, SFV is awesome and still play it today, it's not perfect but enjoy it quite a bit.

Shaddy Capcom fused all versions of SF5 (original, arcade, champion) into the same tier. They did the same thing with Resident Evil 7 (original and gold edition) which is why it's ranked so high in their platinum list, but in reality RE5 is the best selling RE game with over 13 millions of copies sold.

So SFIV sold a total of 9.6 across platforms amd versions.

SFV couldve sold way better than it did. They've soured the audience on Xbox now.

So that’s 9 years. We’re on year six now, February will be 7 years. Did they give a month for Street Fighter 6 release?
From the first iteration of both SFIII ('97) and SFIV('08) it was 11 years. Would be more if we're talking the date they hit consoles since they both received arcade releases prior to that.

I didn’t like what SFV did. I grew up playing SF2 and 3 at the arcade. I bought V, the first season pass and then I paid for a couple more characters. I purchased the Championship Edition and then Capcom makes yet another Season Pass to go with the complete version. I got sick of spending the money. That’s great the game gets extra stuff, but it never felt like a complete game. It either needed to wait a couple months for the story mode or they had some weird character to announce. The replayability of Street Fighter after 3rd Strike sucks. I like to play Third Strike and everything before Third Strike. I played USFIV at the arcade a while back and I wondered why isn’t this game popular anymore. I played vanilla SFIV all the way to Ultra. I don’t understand the appeal of V and maybe it’s because I lost interest in the game. I had over 70 hours logged in SFV at the start and then it never felt like the game got better.

They aren't going announce a Street Fighter and released it 3 years late lol.

Capcom said 2023, I didn't hear any news about a month yet.

Seems it was less a year.

First SF III to hit consoles was Double Impact on the Dreamcast in 1999 so that to 2009 is 10 years, one year short. Pretty late console release for SF III to hit consoles but it makes sense given nothing before the Dreamcast handle a CPS3 port other than expensive PC"s.

Believe it or not, it's an even wider gap than that. Those 6.3m copies of SFII that sold on SNES do not include the 4.1m copies of Turbo on the SNES or the 2m copies of Super Street Fighter II on the SNES.

Overall SFII sold 12.4m copies on one platform versus SFV which sold only 6.6m copies across all versions and platforms (PS,PC). That's terrible considering how many more gamers there are today vs the SNES days.

Man, Street Fighter II was a crazy time. It felt like it may as well have been the only game out for years. It was on the cover in some form of just about every issue of every gaming magazine for years.

I think there are merits in combing, it should depend on how much sense it makes for one person to buy multiple versions of the game.
 
not new, first 2mb cart,thing was $75 in the us at launch with demand pushing the price higher at some stores, and remember it was supplanted by turbo in less than a year so that 6 million came fast

I know, I was being sarcastic. I got it bundled with my SNES back in the day. My point was to prove this comparison makes no sense not only because of the price difference but also how gaming has evolved and it’s market share

The pricing discounts over the year definitely have helped with the sales numbers...

However I think it'd be more interesting to know what total revenue SFV has generated. In that area, I think SFII still has it beat; remember SFII was a TITAN in arcades for a very long time, between the original and the other variants. Especially if you adjusted for the modern cost of inflation, I kind of doubt SFV has surpassed it in total revenue.

That said, I think it's easily surpassed SFIV and its variants in total revenue, which should be all the more proof that SFV being PS4 console-exclusive was NOT the reason it struggled early on. Such was always a ridiculous assertion, when the proof of the game's poor release state, between a gimped cast, tons of missing content, and horrible netcode, were right in everyone's faces.

If SFV launched in a more competent state, it'd of probably sold closer to 7-8 million LTD, without need for as many pricing discounts or sales promotional prices too, and would have generated even more revenue. But its results amid where it started to what it's managed to turn into now, are no less impressive.
 
Imagine if Sony decided not to co-fund the game because Capcom was financially struggling at the time 🤔...

People forget this was still during the years of Capcom having games flopping let and right, fans being upset over every other new release, n0o new Mega man games for years, the Mega Man Universe and Legends 3 cancellation, Resident Evil 6, and Remember Me. Then Mighty Number 9 scame happened and it was supposed to be a knockout punch to Capcom because Inafune was behind it and made a bucnh of Capcom fans believe he was the engine behind Capcom

It was a completely different time, Capcom was nowhere close to being in the same position than as they are now, people were expecting bankruptcy, a merger, or an acquisition.

If Sony has not come in, if we ever did get a Street Fighter 5 it would have been years later, after Resident Evil and other quality games made after the restructuring saved the company from the worst. Possibly tosay instead of SF6, without Sony picking up 5, 5 would be the game we would be talking about now instead of 6. SF was about to be put in the closet without that funding.
 
Still it's impressive on its own and compared to other individual titles in the franchise. Gaming and sales of games have increased a lot post PS3 era and seems this title has been helped by that and the pandemic maybe.

VI looks a lot more interesting to me though.

Over the years I would out hundreds of hours into street fighter. Sf IV was an obsession. But yeah, soulcalibur 6 was decent, tekken 7 etc too.

Sf6 looms like a return to form.

SFvs story mode is an example of how bad the game is. It's awful lol. Just watch some cut scenes on YouTube. 😆

I'm also more into Tekken/Soul Calibur as well. Street Fighter is something I picked up because it is the default game in most locals. I never actually messed with the story stuff in V though. I liked playing it competitively enough. 3rd strike is my favorite though.

You can't blame Take Two for milking GTA V dry after it past 45 million and tripled San Andreas sales. It's not over 170 million! Can you imagine how much money they would have potentially lost if they had a GTA 6 out in only 4 years?

The articles title is literally that SFV passed SF2 lol.

The combining SF2 thing is lazy, I don't like SFV but i'm not going to cheat, those SNES games are all different games, remasters. They aren't DLC.

Halo 1 was a phenomenon, at least around here where we had Lan parties daily, and it seemed everyone owned it and it supposedly only sold 6 million copies. Today 6 million isn't near as crazy as it was in the early '00s. This news doesn't put 5 above 2 in the least.

6 million was a damn lot on the early '00s. Most games couldn't hope to sell that and when you consider most of that was in the US, 4 million that's a big deal.

That's the point of my post and why I made that comparison. Newer games have a high chance to outsell games from the '90s like SF2. Also, it shows how much bigger gaming is worldwide compared to then.

So you have absolutely no idea how good the game actually is because you hardly have any playtime put into it.

When you've played every street fighter, marvel vs capcom, xmen, ex plus alpha, every streetfighter released religiously for your life...you know when one isn't great.

SFV was a complete mess and obviously just a contract agreement....ask anyone who knows about the series.

SF2's legacy will remain that of the legendary game that made the genre break big.

SFV's will be that of a bomba with F2P aspirations that eventually dragged itself out of its own crater.
