I Just Beat The Original FFVII

Yeah, it is a great game. I still distinctly recall playing when it was released back in '97. I was 13 at the time and had never played a game with a story fit for a novel before. Epic journey chasing Sephiroth across the globe, and an epic showdown to boot.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Remake and Intergrade too. SE really went above and beyond with the character redesigns, expanding the dialogue while keeping their personalities intact. Cannot wait for Rebirth. :messenger_grinning:

I owned it back then but didnt like it, so never really played it. How long did it take you?

I owned it on PC on bootleg discs way back but it just never got me hooked. I also own the remake.

Over the years ive more or less known some stuff like sephirot bad and that some girl dies but thats about it

I've played it for about 40 min. Maybe i give it a another chance.
the story of many many many FF7 alumns: We played it for 40 minutes, claimed "what is this shit" and put it down. Then came back to it days/months/weeks/years later, played it for a few hours, it all clicks and your "holy shit" moment kicks in and then you wind up replaying it every year for the rest of your life.

What is like the ultimate or just best way to play this nowadays? I see lots of talk of mods.

I have only ever started it a few times.
yeah, would also love to know. I remember there was an AI Background upscaling or some sort of it, or maybe it was for an other game.

For me its playing it on the Vita. The game looks great, its the original PSone exact game (none of the weird PC jank that version has and needs fixed via mods), and the low screen resolution makes it feel like it did when I first played it (clean, not pixilated).

Steam Deck with a CRT filter and mods seems also great.

If you have the time, PC with all out mods is a fun way to experience it again, but I dont suggest that for first timers (its a lot of work, and many many many mods are just stupid/ugly/pointless or ruin the first time experience)

The possibilities. If Sephiroth is actually time traveling, this could be one of the greatest feats in gaming history. I LOVE time travel stuff. Back To The Future for life.
It seems to not be only time traveling, but alternate timelines as well.

Spoilers from FFVII Remake

Zack is dead in FFVII Remake, just like he is in the original game. But, the end shows his death sequence being changed and Zack heading back into Midgar instead of Cloud.

There is a lot unknown as the end of Remake gives more questionsthan answers. I just hope it ends up making sense and not completely, "interpret ithowever you want".

Disc 1 was stellar and disc 2 was mostly good although the pacing falls a bit. Disc 3 was short. Was hoping sephiroth was gonna be really hard but I ended up crushing him without seeing supernova :( due to the extra bosses making me broken. Really wish you could continue post game..

It took me a while because I didnt play it every day. I think my final gametime hours on my save was around 55 hours but i finished in a course of like 2-3 weeks.

I was surprised when I hit disc 3. It was like just the little bit of leftover from disc 2.

Well done, great game.

I got to Sephiroth as a kid when it first released but never beat him. If I remember correctly, the game doesn't allow you to leave once you get to the crater and I couldn't level grind. Just kind of hit a wall and wasn't about to do it all over again. I've played through roughly 50% of the game a few times since then but it's still unfinished for me. Maybe someday.

My God what an incredible experience! I am BLOWN AWAY. I can’t imagine how amazing this would’ve felt to play and beat back in the 90’s. At that time I only had an N64 and was obsessed with Ocarina Of Time. I remember trying ff7 at my friends hous at the time but I hated turn based games, so I didn’t play it much and didn’t have the patience for it.
The whole materia system and how amazingly powerful you can become was so much fun. The Knights Of The Round was rediculous. Not to mention all the different strategic things you can do with combining different materia. It gave me the same feeling Super Metroid did where you feel like such a powerful badass towards the end of the game, but x 10.

The story, my God so EPIC! You really feel like you are saving the world, I love that. The twists and turns with finding out who Cloud really is, what happened in the past, it was so gripping. It was an AMAZING story.

And the music. Are you kidding me?!?! This has probably became my favorite gaming soundtrack. From the music in the beginning that pumps you up, to the sweet melody of Aerith and Tifa, to the REDICULOUSLY EPIC Sephiroth fight, man that soundtrack is legendary. I am gushing. What an experienc. I LOVE gaming. This will be in my annual gaming rotation.

Edit : stupid autocorrect

BEST GAME EVER ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Yep, I'll never forget my first experience with the game. I didn't own a Playstation but my friend did and so I would go over every day to watch him play. I'd sit next to him with the strategy guide open, directing where to go next so we didn't miss anything. I was 9 years old and had never really seen an RPG before, at least none that I can remember. I remember originally thinking the turn-based combat looked dumb, but I was immediately drawn in by the story and graphics. After a few hours I was sold on the combat too, and I'm pretty sure we did absolutely everything the game had to offer.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on FF8, even if you hate it. It's my favorite Final Fantasy, but boy it's..........different.
I will either play FF8 next or 7 Remake since its FF7 is still fresh in my head to compare, then 8.

Back when I had a friend to sit there and play JRPGs with. We played through this. I remember we video taped the final encounter and then played Super Nova for my friend’s parents because we thought it was incredible.
It’s a great Final Fantasy game. It’s funny how it’s so popular now. I use to see copy after copy at Target, the greatest hits were on the end cabinets for years, Barnes & Noble kept VII-IX’s strategy guides way into the PS2’s life cycle. I wouldn’t be surprised if they still sold it. I like the games, but I’ve also lived well past their prime. That PS3 tech demo was a lot like KH3’s teaser. It drained a fan inside of you because you thought for whatever reason Square would release VII’s Remake on PS3.

Now go play 8, 9, and 10 if you haven’t already.

9 is probably the closest thing that will give you this high, and 8, while flawed, has perhaps the best Original Soundtrack in the franchise.

I still hope for a real remake one day. Not just a FF7 flavoured Kingdom Heart with horrible materia system and middle finger meta story filler.

One of my top 10 fave games of all-time, one of the most seminal releases of all-time. I was in high school, long before the game even came out my friends and I were salivating at the screenshots in gaming magazines I used to buy like EGM and Gamefan. One of the most famous print ads had the text "you can hear your pupils dilate", anyone remember that?

When the game finally came out it was everything I could have hoped it would be and much more, absolute masterpiece. *3* Bahamut summons, god-tier villain, sweet sweet materia system, Vincent fucking Valentine (who happens to be easily missable), Knights of the Round, got damn Golden Saucer, Omnislash and one of the most genuinely shocking deaths in gaming history, this game's legendary status is solidified forever and always.

Any version that has the built-in 3x speed toggle, or an emulator that does the same thing. Been going back and playing these older JRPGs recently and it can be really painful at 1x unless you're unemployed.

They really oversimplified the models in that game. They realized they could get away with using more detailed models in FF8.
It is kind of weird they went that way. I guess it was a hold over from the chibi characters from the old games.

The Steam version seems to have more detail in the backgrounds. Not certain if they are A.I. enhanced or not.
Maybe it is because they are on an HD screen.

Just saw that there is a full AI upscale mod to download, i think i'm gonna do that.

Yeah. I never get why SquareEnix does not just AI Upscale these games. That is really what people want. Just a version that is tweaked for HD.

Did you cheat with the W-Item materia?

No shame if you did, I do it every playthrough since you get it at the end of the game before the grind sets in.

aint nobody got time for that GIF

Wow, the A.I upscaling mod is great. The game looks actually pretty nice with upscaled backgrounds and character models

His dad could have played it in his teens. I'm 37, and didn't play FF7 until I was 16. If his dad conceived at 17 like mine did, his kid would be almost old enough to drink.

I damn sure consider anything that happened before age 18 as my childhood.
Calculate Zach Galifianakis GIF

That checks out. It just threw me for a loop with my built-in assumptions about age of 1) conception, 2) NEOGAF members, and 3) childhood's end.

I was lucky enough to get ff7 for Xmas in 1998 and yeah, it was one of "those" types of rare magical experiences. Was my first RPG and it was pretty cutting edge for the time. It's by far the best RPG I've played. Ff7 Remake doesn't do it for me. I was expecting something more true to the original. It's the cringe dialog though that bothers me most.

I've never been able to recapture that magic from an rpg. Not even Chrono Trigger could do it for me

It's a special game, I'm glad people are still enjoying it.

Back in the day even my sister who wasn't into games and my friend who was into sports games were drawn to it and played many hours. No other FF or jrpg took their interest and they weren't open to the hype either.

never got around to beating it.
had it on PC, got far, then my PC died... and i didnt want to start over.

will beat it one day. battle victory music is still seared in my brain.
remake doesnt do it for me.

When I first got the game I played it straight over 3 days (56 hours)!

That was amazing, I just couldn't drop the controller, the music, story and world, discovery, etc. I wanted the remake to convey all this, but given its current format this is impossible.

Yep, its a legandary game, my favorite ever made.

You can always tell people who have played the game to the end, I've not met a single person who has beat that game who isn't in awe of it and glowing when talking about it. Everyone else who dismisses the game or claims it as overrated either never played it or never beat it. Same goes for a great game call Ghost Trick.
I beat it and didnt enjoy it. Story felt nonsensical to me. I don’t get the love for the music in these games, sounds like generic to me.
