For the entirety of last gen up until now, Naughty Dog hasn't created a single new IP.

They gave you the same game during that other period too. In the beginning with PlayStation it was Crash and Jax ('97-'05). That moved over to just Uncharted for the majority of the PS3 generation until The Last of Us at the very tail-end. They moved over to strict AAA games which have a different development timeline than their other games. You are conflating the number of games released with the number of brand new IPs that have been created.

They had 4 Crash games, then started Jak only 2+ years later with 4 Jak games on consoles and two on the PSP. Then they moved to uncharted in 2 years and had 3 console games a Vita game, and TLOU, then they moved on to nothing for an entire gen, and from 2020 until now for the next generation of consoles they still have nothing.

Instead what we have gotten in that entire time is 3 versions of TLOU, TLOU2, TLOU stand alone dlc, TLOU MP, Uncharted 4, and the Uncharted legacy thing.

There's no spinning this, and ALL their games were AAA games in each of their time periods, Uncharted became a massive one and they still had 3 games, helped with a Vita game, and put out TLOU. I'm not conflating anything, you're ignoring the evidence that shows there's little excuse for 9 years without a new IP.

But releasing TLOU a third time without MP, they have time for that? They didnt even need the original remaster. that came out only one year after the original game.

It can do both, but if you're striving for the quality in animations and voice acting and overall fidelity that ND strives for they are not big enough for a new IP alongside this unless they double in size.

Remember they outsource a TON of work too, it takes a ton of man power you are obviously ignoring because you like thinking you're right.

See above.

Naughty Dog is a damn fine studio, but I also concede that I hate just about everything I've seen and read about them this gen.

They haven't even released anything this gen. Are you mad because they said they'll try to fix their crunch culture?

Tldr

They should have made a new IP instead of making Unfarted 4 and LL
Nope. I could do without Lost Legacy but Uncharted 4 was absolutely necessary and one of the most important PS4 games.

More or less exactly the problem. But I mean beyond releases. Playing both sides of their fan base, Druckman putting all of his IPs into the Hollywood limelight instead of keeping his attention focused also takes the writing on the wall and coats it in hot neon glow in the dark colors: the Druckman Era of ND has been more focused on story telling and realism than gameplay and players, evident by ND trying to slowly wriggle their properties into passive media. Then you have the Uncharted 4/LL remaster deal, the might-as-well-be shovelware please be excited Factions 2, and the totally not a remaster Remake of TLOU, which thus far is proving to be the exact same gameplay with the exact same VO, but somethingsomething improved AI something something.

I mean, the talent is/was there, but the reinventive glam rock phase doesn't make every caterpillar blossom into a butterfly, sometimes it just makes a dumb bug covered in shit.

That doesn't directly correlate to what i was saying, it's still a fact that most SINGLE studios make sequels for long periods of time for successful games and in order to make a high quality game and new IP alongside it also takes massive resources. A new IP as stated by many devs takes up to 7 years to create because of the concept phase, you're basically complaining for no reason at all.

Nonsense, the strongest part of TLoU Part 2 is the gameplay. Sure the focust on series and movies sucks and I won't be watching it, but that's Sony's doing more than anything else.

What is wrong with them going for story telling and realism? That's where they are head and shoulders above pretty much any other studio.

Why do you care about remasters or remake? Just don't buy it, they also release remasters last gen for pretty much most of their games.

I mean, I don't care about remasters or Remakes, and I won't buy it. I'm also not angry, as your edited post asserted. I have no problem with ND, and I own every Uncharted and TLOU release thus far, I'm just saying what they're doing right now isn't for me. If it's for you, that's awesome. Have a good time.

Explain it to me. I'm going to cry because I'm ok with the direction ND is going? Their last release being one of the best games of the last generation and with Uncharted 4 being the best Uncharted so far.

You are the one who seem really mad over their success, at least try to disguise how desperate you are.

You can’t handle people being critical of a studio you like. You come across exactly as insufferable as the “Leave Brittney Alone” meme, except unlike that man - you are being serious. I just can’t tell if you are a Naughty Dog shill or a Playstation Warrior. But it is clearly one of the two.

Mad? Hardly. Disappointed in the lack of quality in their games since the PS3 era? Absolutely. I used to adore Naughty Dog. Put in well over 500 hours into the Uncharted 2 and 3 Multiplayer. Loved the Jak series and even bought every ultimate collector’s edition from LRG on their PS4 ports. However, ever since Druckman came into power, the game quality has gone down tremendously. I don’t mind a focus on narrative, as long as it isn’t detrimental to the game design. Sadly that is *exaclty* what has happened with both Uncharted 4 and the entirety of The Last of Us series. The only saving grace of TLOU1 was its Multiplayer, which seems to be completely gone from both the pointless remake and nonexistent entirely aside from promises of TLOU2.

The topic is:

For the entirety of last gen up until now, Naughty Dog hasn't created a single new IP.

Not Naughty Dog hasn't released X amount of games last gen. I hope y'all are holding other studios feet to the fire such as 343 Industries and their inability to create something else besides numerous Halo sequels and spin-offs. It feels like a certain crowd wants to humble them for some odd reason as if they need to be.

I never said it was, you know I'm not. The issue is they have had little excuse not to put out a new Ip and you are trying hard to create excuses for them as they make very fan unfriendly choices about how they run the company. Instead of improvement you think they are fine as is.

More power to you, but i would rather have a new Ip than a remaster 1 year after the original game, a bunch of cash grab side projects, and TLOU 1 having a 3rd release with content removed for full price.

They claim to be working on something, hopefully whenever they reveal it it'll be good. But until they show something the only upcoming games we have is that full priced 3rd release and a standalone MP used to justify removing MP from the previous game.

Dude, what are you even talking about? I can't handle what? I was talking respectfully with someone else and then you show up trying to mock me and now you want to pretend that I'm the one who is mad. Makes no sense.

It clearly isn't worth discussing anything with you, I won't bother reading all the evil Druckman nonsense you wrote.

“Evil Druckman”? Where did I state he was evil? Just that his direction was not something that I find appealing.

You can’t even debate/discuss without creating idiotic strawman arguments. Pathetic.

The entire PS4 gen and the first 2 years of the PS5, Naughty Dog has not given us a new game series. It really shows the direction they are going in, and may explain some of the...content that's been inserted in a few of their recent games, as well as some of their recent decisions, one of which upcoming is a bit controversial.

While they never owned Crash they were eager to start a new series taking what they've learned and created the Jak and Daxter franchise. While the last Jak did overlap with Uncharted iirc, it was passing of the torch. While Uncharted started out as a clone of another game instead of taking what they learned from jak, it was still a new experience, a third person action game that was grounded in reality and not in sensationalism like their previous titles.

Starting with Uncharted 2, the culture at naughty Dog changed along with their game design, going for a Hollywood cinnamic action flick style over substance storyline and game design. Millions flocked to see the "Hollywood blockbuster of gaming" and Naughty Dog has kept to this formula ever since.

Uncharted passed the torch to The Last Of Us, but didn't stop their, Uncharted 4 was made afterward in an unusual action for the company to squeeze whatever was still left in the franchise and then finally completely giving the reigns to TLOU. But TLOU came out on the PS3 in 2013.

So since 2013, until now, 9 years and counting, Naughty Dog has not given us a single new series. With the third release of the first TLOU and a new MP GaaS entry, this may be another gen where Naughty Dog avoid creating a new IP.

Riding along with this is also a change of culture at Naughty Dog, the staff are...different, the priorities have changes, they seem to have social problems, and their communication with fans is lacking to say the least.

But I find it pretty sad that Naughty Dog has deformed so much over the years, that now they are ripping people off poorly communicating their plans with fans on their upcoming releases, and don't seem to be interested in ambition anymore.
They are too busy receiving GOTY awards and counting millions of copies sold to think about new IPs.

Now seriously, they have been growing and will continue growing with the idea of having multiple big projects at full production in their studio, and said to be interested to work on more Uncharted, TLOU and new IP.

Their current announced projects (they have unannounced ones) are:
  • TLOU Remake (PS5, codeveloped with Sony VASG San Diego)
  • Uncharted Lecacy of Thieves (PC port, outsourced to Iron Galaxy)
  • TLOU factions MP game (PS5, codeveloped with Bend)
  • TLOU tv show (they didn't make it, Druckmann did help them with scriptwriting and directed an episode)
  • TLOU Remake (PC port, outsourced to someone else)
Unannounced/rumored projects could be:
  • Uncharted spinoff (according to Jason Shredder codeveloped with Bend until Bend moved away to focus on their next new IP, we don't know if canned, if continued inside ND or if replaced Bend with someone else like Bluepointt)
  • TLOU III (Druckmann wrote a first draft of the main story just in case later they decided to develop it)
  • New IP (rumored or assumed since many years ago)
  • TLOU2 Director's Cut (remastered for PS5 and months later PC, my personal bet)
  • Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection (remastered for PS5 and months later PC, outsourced to someone else, my personal bet)
Btw, how about asking Nintendo or MS to stop making new Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Halo, Forza or now CoD, Elder Scrolls and move to make more new IPs? Exactly doesn't make sense. They'll continue milking their cash cows and new IPs will come as they consider it.

Nintendo and Microsoft have brought out several new Ips in the last 9 years Bethesda alone has published several new IPs and literally has a game called Starfield that was first shown months ago.

(just as it's my opinion) What's the gold standard, in your view? Talking about the years these games released btw.
i dont really have a gold standard, but i think uncharted is crap.
it's mostly cutscenes and set pieces... and while those are usually done very well (exceptionally well at times), i value gameplay above all else, and i hate uncharted's actual gameplay. gunplay is horrible, climbing is a total snore-fest, bunch of QTE crap, exploration is garbage, etc.

but some action/adventure games from 2007 - 2016 i think are better?

demons souls/dark souls
RDR1
TLOU
... ill even take re5/6 over uncharted.

They did, but its a valid point that every other publisher and the majority of studios under them don't create new IP.

So you're still wrong.

Posting a list with Starfield on it doesn't really work in your favorite, and yes, Bethesda was a publisher and had studios under it so yeah that counts.

I mean if people don't care about ND having a new Ip this bad that's fine, i just think that they have had many opportunities wasting it on 3 releases of the same game and some other questionable choices, they had more opportunities than other studios, to do so imo.

But it's all about opinion at the end of the day, and if you are fine with ND as they are that's fine too.

Except I am not, you can take out context because you want to defend Naughty Dogs output and questionable business decisions from a separate conversation.

That person is the one that brought up Nintendo and Microsoft and I listed games under those brands that were new, it's clearly a completely different parallel conversation.

Naughty Dog is a subsidiary studio developing games for PlayStation Studios not a publisher like Nintendo or Microsoft. Bethesda Softworks is the publisher but the studio developing Starfield is Bethesda Game Studios. You know how many new IPs they've created in 20 years? One, and that one is Starfield. You're not making equivalent comparisons. You mentioning how many IPs Nintendo and Microsoft have brought out in the last nine years is irrelevant to this conversation. If you want to start listing out new IPs created by PlayStation Studios in that same timeframe we can, and it's a long list.

You are the one who brought up the Bethesda list. Starfield is also still on the list either way, you're very aggressive attempt to make excuses for ND isn't needed

If YOU are ok with their business decisions that's fine, if you are going to buy TLOU Part 1 than by all means I'm not stopping you, I just don't agree that these cash-in decisions were wirth it over a new IP.

You seem to forget Naughty Dog is for all purposes just a small Developer. They aren't Bethesda Games who have many teams. ND has 2 teams maximum. If you collectively look at Sony as a Publisher, they would have introduced some new IPS over the past decade or whatever metric your tossing around. Also, who the hell are you to hold Naughty Dog accountable for their game development, they don't owe you anything. You have no idea how that studio work internally. If their creators want to keep making the same game over and over, that is up to them. There is no rule that says a company must make 'new' stuff, especially if people keep buying it. They owe you nothing if in their artistic view, Last of Us has more story to tell. Maybe Druckman is a terrible Manager.

Have you have thought that, maybe Sony gives them complete freedom, or Sony wants safe cash and requests ND stick to proven franchises for now? There are plenty of excuses in and out of 'developers' control that may cause this. How many new franchises has 'Sonic Team' made in the past 10 years, plenty of companies in the same boat.

But that's just it, developers are different than publishers.

God forbid, Bungie hasn't made a new IP since Destiny which released in 2014, with their previous game in 2010 (Halo) that is 12 years since a new IP. Bungie supposedly has over 800 employees, reportedly bigger then Naughty Dog. Conversely not every DEVELOPR can be like Insomniac. Tons of developers in ND's situation, but not as famous, not as successful. But not as dramatic to discuss and war about.

I am sure with all the prestige and fame Naughty Dog has earned and been awarded, they are crying at night worrying about the past 10 years and no new IPS. Most developers would kill to have the freedom and budget that SONY grants Naughty Dog, even it meant a decade of the same characters.

It _MIGHT_ be time to stop posting and making yourself look like a troll or console warrior.

look at rockstar. they haven't made a new IP in who the fuck knows how long. in the xbox/ps2 era they were getting weird with stuff like The Warriors (amazing game) and Bully. Now they are just begging 14 year olds to borrow their moms credit card and buy shark cards. AAA games industry is trash.
To be a pain in your ass, they made Rockstars Table Tennis, which was great but really just built to show off their engine.

They also made Max Payne 3 which is arguably one of the best third person shooters of all time. Not a new IP but I think this was Rockstar at their best (just before the GTAV era).

Like someone else said, new IPs are risky business for AAA developers. They can fall flat on their ass and still cost millions to make. This is why the AAA side of the industry is mostly shit at the moment, no new themes or ideas usually, just the same old games.

keep relaying in one IP is a risk as well.

Is crazy to think that ND made 4 AAA (2 brand New IPs) games on PS3.

3 of those 4 games were less than 10 hours long and that wouldn't fly for a new $60 release in the PS4 gen. I mean, look at The Order 1886.

If you think about it, their productivity was basically equal during the PS4 gen. They had two way bigger games, with Uncharted 4 and TLOU2, and a game that was of a similar scope to Uncharted 1-3, with The Lost Legacy.
