I Just Beat The Original FFVII

Yup, this game is legendary for a reason.

Only issue is that this is it. This is the one best JRPG out there. And trying to chase that high in other games is gonna crush you with disappointment (well perhaps with the exception of Chrono Trigger).
Great post but you forgot FF6.

Release a remake now and it's selling a shit ton, remake be damned.

That's the game us old heads hang our hat on...

I started FF7 for the first time back in May and played for 8hs, i really enjoyed what i played but i haven't touched it since not because i got bored but just i dont know, i did not keep playing it. You just motivated me to keep playing.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it!!!

Final Fantasy is my favorite series, but VII is one of the entries that I held off on. I got halfway through Disc 1 quite a while ago (probably 2014 or something like that), and I just told myself “I’ll just wait for a remake” because I couldn’t handle the horrible visuals and translation.

The Remastered version of the game is a really breezy and enjoyable experience, though. Played through it last year and LOVED it. Amazing atmosphere, characters, art style, etc.

I hate random battles. So when it comes down to the bones of the structure, I'll quit playing before I find out what happens in the story. Random battles while exploring deserve their own circle of hell.
If it helps, the Remastered versions of PS1 FF games allow you to turn random encounters on and off whenever you’d like.

this and chrono trigger - playing them for the first time were probably my best gaming experiences of all time. i had ff7 even before i had a playstation. i've been a die hard ff fan since i was a kid.

your story is awesome !!

So his dad had a child in his childhood?
It happens.
Calculate Zach Galifianakis GIF

That checks out. It just threw me for a loop with my built-in assumptions about age of 1) conception, 2) NEOGAF members, and 3) childhood's end.
It happens.

Funny you mention chrono trigger. I had bought the original snes version years ago (it came with an snes I ordered on eBay) and I played just the beginning like 15 minutes but I remember the music was crazy good When you wake up at home. I have to get back to it, I have so many classic RPGs that I want to experience now. Once you get over the hump of hating random battles, a whole new genre opens up for you. It’s crazy. I’m so glad I’m over that phase in my life.

Cloud's amnesia is kind of bullshit, did he have a head injury? I don't remember.
ITs not bullshit, he took Sephs sword through the stomach, still defeated him by throwing him off the bridge, collapsed and basically almost died, then was shoved into a mako tank for years while hojo experimented. Dude suffered from nearly dieing + Mako poisoning and was basically a vegetable until his best friend was murdered right in front of him.

Is the Final Fantasy 7 Remake true to the original, or are there some fundamental changes?
Its a sequel disguised as a remake, its locations and overall events are true to the first 5 hours of FF7, with some major changes caused by Seph and Aerith's fucking with the timeline. Its great for people like me who see FF7 original as the best game ever made and know they had no chance of making a perfect 1:1 remake, so instead we get a slightly new experience that lets us see these characters, locations and hear this music in a completely new way. I'm excited for the next games even though I know the plot, because there is a lot of potential for major plot changes. People will bitch they wanted a 1:1 remakte, but I have the original game and love it, and now this remake adds on to it and gives you reason to replay the original instead of replacing it.

Yep, that's what i think also, if you want the vanilla experience go play the original FF7.

Yeah. He had more trauma than I remembered.

I respect your opinion but don’t agree I’d argue FF6-10 are all around about the same high quality with some exceptions here and there in each game respectively, these days I think final fantasy 10 might be the high point in the series because it was the last final fantasy I played that didn’t leave a bitter taste in my mouth.

Any version that has the built-in 3x speed toggle, or an emulator that does the same thing. Been going back and playing these older JRPGs recently and it can be really painful at 1x unless you're unemployed.
For sure I played plenty of SNES games with a fast forward.

This game consumed my life for a while back then. I ignored everything but necissity like school and couldnt think of anything else for a while even after beating it.
Its funny because Im still thinking about the game even though its been a few weeks since I beat it and want to replay it to experience it again.

I need to play the other FFs now. The only other ones I had played were 10 and 15, both of which I really enjoyed.
4, 6, 7 and 10 are great and narratively focused. 1, 3, 5 and 9 are great and gameplay focused. They all have these traits but some focus on 1 aspect more than the others. 2, 8, 12, 13 and 15 are interesting games but they kinda drop the ball in some areas like the weird RPG systems in 2 and 8. 13 tries to be like 10 but it doesn't nail many aspects as well as 10.

12 and 15 were hurt by their development woes. 12 got a big shift in it's narrative focus when it's director went on health leave, 15 was gonna be a 13 adjacent game called 13 versus that kept getting sidelined in development priority until eventually it became FF15 and SE said "u got 3 years, use whatever u got and get it out the door".

The Remake is actually what made me want to play the original which I have a suspicion it did that to others too so I owe it to the Remake. I played the Remake first and got really into it. It definitely had some filler moments but the character, graphics, and especially the gameplay was really fun. Then I wanted to know what happens next so I played the original. WOW. It was definitely a shock, Midgar was over quick and it got crazy awesome after. Had I played the original first, I doubt I would’ve liked the Remake as much as I did.
Yea I first played the original a year before Remake came and I found the narrative in Remake to be so awful compared to how good it was in FF7. I just don't understand how you fumble a game that nailed it the 1st time like that. Like it's already made for you, people already like it so if you wanna a different narrative just focus on enhancing the good aspects and get rid of the bad aspects. Instead they went full Kingdom Hearts on FF7.. unreal.

This is why I don't want them to touch Xenogears or Chrono Trigger out of fear of the games getting norted.

I know I'm part of the minority there, but I didn't enjoy it at the time, and I still don't.

The pre-rendered environments were ugly, the loading times terrible (both due to the limits of its platform I guess), combat was - yes, I'll say it: boring and an artifact of the old era of JRPG. I'm also going to say I disliked most of the characters, especially Cloud and Sephiroth. Summons were really impressive but some took way too long; nothing like breaking the rythm an already boring combat with Knights of the Round or Supernova...

On the plus side: the soundtrack is still, to this day, the best in the series. The Materia system was also interesting (but could've been implemented better maybe).

When I think that the PSX had such JRPG gems as Xenogears or Tales of Eternia, and yet it's this one that's considered the "GOAT", is quite incomprehensible.
I love Xenogears. It runs circles around any Xenoblade game. Shame monolith can never reach such heights.

the story of many many many FF7 alumns: We played it for 40 minutes, claimed "what is this shit" and put it down. Then came back to it days/months/weeks/years later, played it for a few hours, it all clicks and your "holy shit" moment kicks in and then you wind up replaying it every year for the rest of your life.
Sometimes people do just put games down for awhile. I pre-ordered FF7 and played like 100hrs of it in ’97 doing everything including all of the chocobo breeding/weapons, etc. except for going to the final boss.
Then I stopped playing for a few months and finally sometime in ‘98 finished the game. Boss was super easy since all my characters were super powerful and I didn’t even need knights of the round.

Haven’t played ff7 again since then. I’m sure I’d still enjoy it, but I’d rather replay ff6 (my favorite ff) or ff4.

edit: I think one reason I stopped playing ff7 for awhile is because I started playing ff tactics In ‘98. I put well over a hundred hours into that and enjoyed it (more than ff7).

Wasn’t Suikoden 2 the one that wasn’t translated to English? Did that ever come out in the U.s on any gaming systems?
Suikoden 2 released in the USA on ps1 in 1999, it released in the EU on ps1 in 2000.

The original is already a long content packed game as it is. It does it need more fluff specially low quality badly written fluff.
The remake doesn't erase the original.
Many fans absolutely LOVE the remake, while others prefer something else entirely.
Impossible to make everyone happy. There is that phone game which is mostly just a new coat of paint.

Sure there's people that love Dragons Dogma(me included) and that game is very flawed. They could have made FF7R a Tetris like puzzle game and there would have been people that liked it. Hell there's people that like eating feces (look it up it's real), then you have literal maximum quality stuff like the film 2001: A Space Odyssey that most audiences won't like despite everything about it from cinematography to story to music being meticulously good. The moral of the story is that different people like different things and there's always going to be fans for a given thing.

FF7 though is game all about its narrative and it has one of the best narratives of FF games as a whole. To make a remake and absolutely dumpster the writing with Kingdom Hearts style shenanigans is simply disrespectful to the legacy of that game. It's not about what they are doing(a newer story vs retelling the old one) it's that whatever they indeed do needs to be done well, what people loved about FF7 was that it was a top tier game and FF7R is certainly not that, even in the era of inflated review scores 7R still failed to match, let alone top OG FF7. We already had garbage cash grabs like FF7 Dirge of Cerberus so why not get it right this time?

I really struggle with older FF because of the long grindy nature of them. I played 12 recently and it felt like work. I still haven't tried 7 though.

I'm glad they did what they did.
Because now I get to enjoy the game not already knowing 100% what's going to happen next.

The Remakes writing so far is far superior to the original, along with the combat systems, materia system and not just the graphics but the art as well.

i am at the point where the remake ends and you have access to the world map for the first time. except for one big thing (aerith related) i have no idea what happens which is exciting! time for the game to start i suppose :)

i have used a guide occasionally. the game doesnt really explain much to you and it seems you need to explore, talk to npcs, and interact with things. in the Shinra building it seems i have missed an important weapon for cloud and i didnt interact with a vending machine which apparently becomes useful later ;(

No no xenogears as well. I played both when they came out and xenogears dethroned FFVII for me but both have a special nostalgic place in my memories.

I just started chrono trigger on the super nintendo. Im only about 30 minutes in but man the MUSIC IS BANGIN! Ill make a new thread on my thoughts when I get deep in or when I complete it. Also, the super nintendo controller feels so good in the hand. Nice and simple. A nice change after playing with these advanced complex controllers.
