Pred: Microsoft may announce an Xbox Series S price cut to $269.99 at gamescom (links incl.)

Usually before an official price cut is announced for America and most English speaking countries, usually other markets receive price cuts first shortly beforehand and I'm noticing that many sites have been discounting the Xbox Series S to $269.99. Some of these were updated within the last 3 days;

In America, an authorized Microsoft dealer is selling the Xbox Series S online for $260. This was reported by Gamespot and techradar today;

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/t...0-right-now/1100-6506771/?ftag=CAD-01-10abi2f

Then finally, just today Microsoft has made the Xbox Series S $269,99 on the official Frenchy Microsoft website. This was updated sometime earlier this morning;

https://www-microsoft-com.translate...tr_sl=fr&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=sc

This makes it easy to predict that an official price drop announcement for the Xbox Series S to $269,99 will be announced shortly, and what better way for the new price to gain exposure than during gamescom, and event that is currently on going.

Assuming this is the case, I expect Series S sales to take off as it gets closer to that mass adoption price of $199. Changing the price to $269.99 would also make the Series S $30 cheaper than the Nintendo Switch, giving Switch gamers an option to upgrade to next gen for the first time at a discount, and with a gamepass sub, access to hundreds of games for free. If this announcement happens It'll cause Series S sales to soar, at least until the end of the year.

$270 is approaching impulse buy territory, if you don't care about physical games and prefer digital. I expect that any price cuts related to Xbox Series or PS5 will only be for the Series S, and I believe Microsoft knew this would be the case. I don't expect the PS5, Series X, or even the Switch, to drop their prices this year, making the Series S the cheapest console available.

But this prediction could be wrong and they may not announce any price cuts, but given the proof above, and the history of that always leading to an official discount announcement, Imo I believe Microsoft will announce a $269,99 price cut. What do you think? Do you agree the $269,99 announcement for Series S is coming?

If they do anything they should leave the price the same and increase the SSD size, imo.

Can a developer choose no to support the series s and only release a game on the x?
Reports last year suggested that the series S was outselling the X, and then was pretty much the only next gen console available on store shelves from thanksgiving to christmas. Wouldnt be surprised if the split is now 66-33% in favor of the XSS.

Not supporting it would be suicide.

Sure.
Just not optimize the Series S version and set everything to potato quality.
The console will try launching the game either which way if it runs at 1fps, fuck it.

Devs still have to have a potato quality setting for PC releases cuz they unofficially support below min spec internally.

Not really, only in a few countries. This year may be different though.

Lol, no. The supply for the X is improving. Maybe during Black Friday it will have a gap that big because that day is all about price, but otherwise that gap is too big.

That's not necessarily true.

I mean maybe I guess, but they could also just push it as available on cloud for series s

If they put it on the cloud for Series S than that's still supporting the Series S lol.

Seems a bit wierd to cut it with ”only” $30. Sure it is a great price but I’d argue they rather wait and drop it to something like $249 because $269 doesn’t really come off as much cheaper than $299.

Moderated wildly
you really think they’d be considering a price drop if the thing was selling like hotcakes at $300?

I think there's plenty of stock out there that they probs want to sell...and two years into this consoles life and the drop in costs of m.2 drives I can see them wanting to clear out to introduce a 1tb option.

It m8ght end up cheaper to goto western digital and just as for a bundle deal on 1tb drives for both the series x and series s. We never know.

that I could see being the case but then it’s not so much a price drop as a clearance price on the soon to be old model

I don't understand this inventory clear out theory, a 1Tb hardrive inside of the S wouldn't be $299 it would cost more, so there's no way Microsoft would be doing that now unless they are introducing a $400 1Tb model.

1Tb was always meant for the premium model (Series X), the S was always meant as an entry way to next gen. Look at how much cheaper the storage card has gotten since it first released? Why add more onboard storage when you can get that card for cheap?

They need to cut the price on the SSD cards, If the series s was going to be successful that success would have happened by now.

I see it so often on store shelves and online for less than the OG price. The experiment with the series s clearly didn’t do what they thought it would have done. But with more game releases next year things could change… who knows.

This is a device that exists for price above all else. I would lower the price as much as possible, whenever possible and leave the 512GB instead of a 1TB upgrade. Unless they were to add a sku with the larger drive and leave the 512GB at a lower price.
That’s why I think they’ll aim for lower price points over having larger SSDs at the same price point. Gaming consoles are the perfect example of products where demand doesn’t scale linearly with price. Lowering price by 10% doesn’t mean that demand also will go up by 10% and it can be significantly higher than that.
