Phil Spencer: Xbox Series S|X will be supply constrained until 2023.

As Sony readies its massive 18 million PlayStation 5 console shipment, Microsoft may still be playing catch-up with hardware availability well into next year. Xbox Series X/S consoles are expected to be limited throughout the remainder of 2022, including the critical holiday season where the gaming industry sees its largest sales boom.

"I still think demand will outstrip supply for us this holiday," Spencer said in a recent interview with Bloomberg. "When we get into 2023 you'll start to see more that supply is catching up. You might see [an Xbox Series console] when you walk in the store."

The news comes at an interesting time for both companies. It's true that Sony is about to deliver its largest PlayStation console shipment in history. Sony wants to ship 18 million PS5s this fiscal year.

Microsoft has a great opportunity for sales this holiday season, but that may be for naught if they aren't able to ship enough consoles to take advantage of that. I know MS like Sony has been preparing for the holiday, but I wonder how many consoles Microsoft will be able to have at the ready?

Maybe, that's why Microsoft was ok with the Forza, Redfall, Starfield delay. Because by the time those come out in 1st half of 2023, there will be enough consoles for to sell. Maybe Microsoft feared having those games launch in 2022 would result in upset fans who wouldn't be able to find a console to play Forza or Starfield and so on.

Phil expects you to be able to find a Series consoles across stores in general by 2023, very optimistic.

Not losing sleep over the first iteration of any console. If it’s not available for purchase on demand then I won’t bother. Hopefully this changes like mr xbox man says.

Yeah, even if they are able to get Series X consoles on store shelves this year, you can bet your ass that everything will sell out over the holidays.

This gen is going to go on for at least another 6 years isnt it?. I mean it was obvious this was going to be anotherlonger gen anyway, but with the chip shortages its probably going to be another 1-2 years before the consoles are readily available on store shelves worldwide, and thats really when the '5 year' generation timeline usually starts.

Here in California the Series S has been easy to find for quite a while, the Series X is very hit and miss, mostly miss but you can find it on shelves from time to time.

I was hoping for a Series S revision with a 1tb SSD and some more colours, looks like that's out for this year at least.
I think the Series S will be available for people to buy until Christmas time like last year when it also sold out.
Hopefully they have built up plenty of stock, they are going to need it early next year when next gen games hit and last gen owners are forced to upgrade.

You can go on Amazon right now and buy a PS5, XSX, XSS, or Switch.
It probably depends on your region. I'm in the UK and can add Series X/S and Switch consoles to my basket without any problems, but with the PS5, I need to 'request invitation'; that it's a "high-demand item with limited quantities" and they "won't be able to grant all requests".

Where have you seen them ? Cause none of the consoles are in any of the major stores in my zip code.

They probably saw one in their local store and deduced "They're everywhere collecting dust on shelves because nobody wants them". People here seem physically incapable of understanding that one console can be more supply constrained than another, while both still being supply constrained. I guess I shouldn't expect anything different given the huge Sony slant on Neogaf

And yet with how brash and obnoxious much of the xbox crowd here are you'd easily be mistaken into thinking the brand is dominating world wide.

Maybe that's the point though considering reality couldn't be further from the truth.

You don't give 25% discounts to a product that is subject to supply constraints. That's a fact.

I'm still yet to see an XSX in a store in the UK. I saw one for a day in a second hand store, but not an actual retail store. XSS i have seen.
Same in France. Sometimes a "stock" of 1 to 3 units drop but are sold within few minutes, so...

Not difficult in Sweden to get an Series X (5700SEK ~$535) This is one single Onlinestore and its physical stores.

That's fun how in this thread MS is about to get more backlash for saying it'll remain hard to get an XSX until 2023, than Sony after raising the price of their profitable consoles.
Well they were getting backlash in the 'Xbox not raising the price of Series consoles' thread, while in the Sony thread it was almost the concensous that the price hike is a GOOD thing.

Where is the 25% discount on Series X? Or are you being completely disingenuous and pretending that the Series S and X have the exact same supply and demand

Yeh so suppy constrained they are discounting the S to the tune of 25% off here and it's always in stock.

Sure Phil.
lol exactly. whats he talking about? Wario was tweeting about Bestbuy giving 2 free games with the series s including Elden Rings and the latest Madden entry. Those are $60 games. Ive seen the series s on store shelves since last year. Before the holiday season.

My local target, bestbuy and walmart all have even the series x in stock. Even Amazon has 10 units left and they are doing it by invitations every week. Phil just trying to generate hype.

Saw the S in stock at a Dallas Target last week. This week I’m seeing them at FNAC in Brussels. Global supply constraints?

I mean, he say's constrained not non-existent. It's likely as holiday sales begin they will be very hard to come by. I've never seen any current gen console on shelves but apparently the best buy here has XSX right now.

The thread title nor is what Phil is discussing only about the Series X.

VAR says no goal. Where do the posts move next?

You really expect Phil to say "The Series X is supply constrained but the Series S is widely available", not only would that make it seem like nobody wanted the Series S, it would also give major "we have a console for people without internet" vibes when the Series X is clearly the more in demand system. If you want to pretend that I'm the one moving goalposts you're more than welcome to think that, but it doesn't make it true. Have fun in your Sony fanclub

On the same day people are talking about new sales estimates, we get claims of supply constraints even though the Series X is readily available on Best Buy (and I am guessing other stores too).

Seriously, why should any regulatory agency believe anything they say about COD after this?

They're on shelves basically everywhere.

Filling shelves more ain't going to do more, unless retailers do discounts, which we already started seeing.
Never seen a single one here in NYC. And as the only city in the world he’s right. There’s a massive supply strain.
